About the Author
Alvin York, or “Sergeant York,” was born in Pall Mall, Tennessee, in 1887. He was drafted into the army and swiftly became one of the most decorated and accomplished soldiers in World War I, having received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, among other notable accolades. When he returned from the war, he was greeted with public outpouring and celebration, largely due in part to an article in the Saturday Evening Post that had circulated prior to his arrival, which detailed York’s heroic actions publicly to a large readership. York passed away in 1964 at the age of 76.

An excellent read. The story of a man who did not know his life work would be directed by pain and suffering, less physical than spiritual. Should be required reading in all high school civics and history classes.
This book was a Christmas gift for my cousin. But I had read it earlier in the year, and really liked it. The author was clear and his research excellent.
This is a remarkable life story of a remarkable man. He bares the resemblance of another remarkable man, JESUS. Both expressed their lives with the spirit of humility. One as Saviour, the other as His servant.

After seeing the Gary Cooper movie, I wanted more information about Alvin York and his Christian testimony, as well as his battle experiences. Very good source! I had two grandfathers in France during the Great War. Now I would like to research their military service. The book is mostly in York's mountain vernacular, which is dying away and needs to be preserved.
