This is only Volume 1 of Macauliffe's 6-volume set of "The Sikh Religion". I had thought that it would be the complete set, but it is not. It does have a linkable table of contents to the Banis of Guru Nanak ji, which is a nice thing. There is also an older Kindle version (from 2010) of Macauliffe's "The Sikh Religion" that is also only the first volume (that's another reason why I thought this one was different.) The older version does not have a linkable table of contents, so for the first volume, this one is better. These publishers and Amazon really need to be clear about whether they are selling the complete set or only one volume! All six volumes have now been released for Kindle as separate books. Even though they are only scanned pages from the bound books I will buy them, because Macauliffe in any form is better than no Macauliffe!Macauliffe dedicated his life to translating the Sri Guru Granth Sahib as accurately as possible, as well as writing detailed biographies of the Sikh Gurus. It would be wonderful if his phenomenal and under-appreciated work could be formatted and indexed for Kindle with the love and care it deserves. Whether you are a Sikh or merely interested in Sikhism, Macauliffe's 6-volumes are the best and most complete resource on Sikhism for English-speakers that has ever been written.

The best book on Sikhism. A complete account of the ten Sikh gurus' lives and almost all of the Sikh scripture in accurate beautiful Translation.Every Sikh should have this set, every serious student of Yogi Bhajan's teachings should read these books. this work was done by a victorian civil Servant of the British Raj in India who learned the languages necessary to translate the Sikh scripture and accounts of their lives. He did the work in consultation with noted Sikh scholars and divines of his days it rings of authenticity.

How is this advertised as all 6 volumes, when its only one? The kindle page says its like 2500 pages, but its actually like 500. It does have an active table of contents, but its in the back, not the front. 😲

A masterpiece. Book written in early 20th century were written after a lot of research, this is a fine example of a well researched book.

This is a particularly appealing for persons who are studying religion, it covers a broad area, from politics to realizations.Wahe Guru.

I recently received my copy of The Sikh Religion by Max Arthur Macauliffe from amazon.co.uk. This is a great piece of work done by a highly placed British civil servant during the days of the British Raj in India. Originally published in 1909, it consists of six volumes covering the entire period from Guru Nanak's birth upto and beyond the passing away of Guru Gobind Singh. It also contains the musical notation for each of the raags (musical measures) in Guru Granth Sahib and numerous meticulous translations of Gurbani (Guru's hymns). It has a comprehensive preface and introduction which sets the historical and religious scene leading up to the time of the Sikh Gurus. It also touches on different religious systems in history and how the Gurus' teachings fit in this setting. The author laments the lapse of Sikhism into Hinduism and refers to the latter as "the great boa constrictor of the Indian forests which crushes other religions and makes them disappear within its vast interior" (I'm quoting from memory). He also has some interesting things to say about getting Sikh teachings translated into English and other languages, and the opposition of some Sikhs to this.He took many years and spent a lot of his personal money devoting himself to this work. Unlike previous attempts by European authors to undertake such work, the author took pains to get the approval of the natives before publishing his work. Each translation and historical detail was submitted to the most knowledgeable Sikh gyanis (priests) of the time. These Sikhs would subsequently take months to study his submissions. If there was disagreement over any detail, the learned gyanis would debate it and either approve the author's work or suggest changes. These are shown in the footers as possible alternative interpretations. The sources used for the work were meticulously examined. For example, the author describes the different Janamsakhis that exist for the life of Guru Nanak. Each of these sources was critically analysed. Some were found to be blatantly abusive works by writers of different sects attempting to promote themselves. Others are more reliable but still need a scientific treatment. Many many sources on the life of the Gurus were lost forever during the times of Mughal oppression. The author was, however, presented with a previously unknown Janamsakhi which was considerably more ancient than the known Janamsakhis and written in Pothhohari script. This he was able to use as a further tool for verification of historical details. The origin of works such as Gur Bilas and Suraj Prakash are also covered. The books are written in chronological order. There are vast numbers of translations of various sections of Gurbani. These translations are given at the appropriate stages in the Gurus' lives. For instance, the acrostic spoken by Guru Nanak as a child when learning the alphabet at school is given at the point in the history that this occurred, rather than where it appears in Guru Granth Sahib. Even for this the author sought and obtained permission from the Sikhs. In addition, at the end of each Guru's life history, full translations are given of some of that Guru's bani, e.g. Japji Sahib and Asa ki War of Guru Nanak. Throughout, the author maintains a pragmatic and realistic stance, yet retains full respect for the Sikhs' beliefs. As a Sikh born and bred in Britain, I personally find a resonance with this work. That is not to put down works done in English by Indian Sikhs, of which many are excellent. However, the monumental result of this Englishman's immense effort strikes a chord with me personally. I suppose, due to my British upbringing, I can see through his eyes and empathise with his descriptions and tone. In this light, I would recommend to others of non-Indian upbringing the refreshing feel of this work. I imagine that those of Indian upbringing would also find this work engaging from their own unique angle. Finally, the author states that such a work can probably never be repeated. Much of the knowledge of those old gyanis would have been lost forever, but for this work. The author estimated that, at that time, there were probably less than ten such knowledgeable gyanis in the world (a questionable statement), and they too were old in 1909. Having made my way through some of the first book so far, I have already learned facts about Sikh history and the Sikh religion of which I was previously ignorant. While some of the descriptions of events in the life of the Gurus may seem far-fetched, these are recorded to reflect the accepted belief by Sikhs of these occurrences. It is the reader's decision to treat these as allegorical or otherwise. The translations of Gurbani, however, are accurate and superb and need no sceptical treatment by the reader.A note on the copy I received: this was a three-volume hard back set which contained two books each. I saw the original 1909 editions in my university library ten years ago. The copies I received are exactly the same in content. The only difference is that the originals were six separate books. The publisher of the copies that I received are Low Price Publications in Delhi. Although these are hard back, they are not of the best quality. Still, I recommend them.

I love Arthur Max Macauliffe writing on Sikhism. He fluid graceful gentlemanly scribing led me to a great love affaire with the poetry of the Siri Guru Granth. This has to be one of the best books I have ever read - every page can completely change to way you think. It is full of brilliantly relayed moral stories , miracles , music , travel adventures and mysticism ! Highly recommend.

Learn How to Quickly Solve Difficult SSAT Test QuestionsHere's a little "secret" about the SSAT: the SSAT is what we in the test preparation field call a "general aptitude" test. While some tests are looking to see what you already know, the purpose of the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT), offered by the Secondary School Admission Test Board (SSATB), is to test your ability to learn. The goal of the SSAT is to use a standardized testing process to create an objective assessment of a test taker's knowledge and skills. In other words, it's more about your ability to learn and process new information than what you know. This is good news for those who are serious about being prepared, because it boils down to a very simple strategy:You can succeed on the SSAT by preparing in depth for the different question types and being able to take difficult questions and break them down into easier parts that you can quickly solve.Repetition and thorough preparation is a process that rewards those who are serious about being prepared, which means that succeeding on the SSAT is within the reach of virtually anyone interested in learning how to handle any question they might face on test day. This is great news! It means that if you've been worried about your upcoming SSAT, you can rest easy IF you have a good strategy for knowing what to study and how to effectively use repetition to your advantage. But it also creates another set of problems. If you tried to memorize every single possible thing you can for the SSAT, the field of possible things to review would be so huge that you could not hope to cover everything in a reasonable time. That's why we created the SSAT Flashcard Study System: we have taken all of the possible topics and reduced them down to the hundreds of concepts you must know and provided an easy-to-use learning method to guarantee success on the SSAT.We wanted this system to be simple, effective, and fast so that you can succeed on your SSAT with a minimum amount of time spent preparing for it. --Here Are Some of the Features of Our SSAT Flashcard Study SystemStudy after study has shown that repetition is the most effective form of learning- and nothing beats flashcards when it comes to making repetitive learning fun and fastFlashcards engage more of your senses in the learning process- you "compete" with yourself to see if you know the answers to the questions, and the flipping action gets you actively involved in the learning processOur cards are printed on heavy, bright white 67 lb. cover stock, and are laser printed at 1200 dpi on our industrial printers- these are professional-quality cards that will not smear or wear out with heavy usageWe cover the major content areas on the examOur flashcards include an edge that is micro-perforated, which means that you are much less likely to have a painful papercut on your fingers when moving quickly through the cardsOur cards are portable, making it easy for you to grab a few and study while waiting for the bus or the doctor, or anywhere where you have a spare moment that would otherwise be wastedOur cards are written in an easy to understand, straightforward style - we don't include any more technical jargon than what you need to pass the testThe cards are a generous size- 3.67 x 4.25 inches- they fit perfectly in your hands and they aren't so small that you have to use a magnifying glass to read tiny type- all questions and answers are in a normal-size print for easy studyingOur concept cards include in-depth explanations- you won't see any "one word" answers on our cards that require you to go get a textbook to understand why your answer was wrong- all of our cards include generous, thorough explanations so you not only get it right or wrong- but you also know why!We use a font created by Microsoft to make reading easier- this will enable you to absorb more information painlessly during late night study sessionsOur system enables you to study in small, digestible bits of information- unlike using boring textbooks, flashcards turn learning into a "game" you can play until you've mastered the materialIt's easy for a friend to help you study- they don't even have to know anything about the SSAT- if they can read, then they can quiz you with our flashcards! Now, let us explain what the SSAT Flashcard Study System is not. It is not a comprehensive review of your education, as there's no way we could fit that onto a single set of flashcards.Don't get us wrong: we're not saying that repetition will automatically result in a passing SSAT score- you have to have some innate ability as well. However, without exposure to the question types and concepts, you cannot possibly hope to do well on the test. After all, it's hard to do well on test or prepare for it when you don't know what's going to be on it.SSAT Flashcard Study System is a compilation of the hundreds of critical concepts you must understand to pass the SSAT. Nothing more, nothing less. --If you think there's even the smallest chance that these flashcards will help you, you owe it to yourself to try them out. Don't let fear or doubt stand in the way of your opportunity to achieve the test score you need to fulfill your dreams.

OVER half of the cards are just Explain this and Explain that. It is not a Flashcard Study. If you think you are getting all examples and explanations this is not what we expected!

This packet does not have vocabulary flashcards.

Pretty helpful for studying for the ssat but most of the stuff on the flashcards was not on the test.

The ISEE flashcard system worked great; my child's scores increased over the SSAT scores. This system will be useful as a refresher for any other standardized testing systems.

We liked the selection of practice problems for the SSAT and the explanation accompanying the answers.

Many type errors. It is not worthy for the money. My son didn't like it and would like to return it.

It is one of the best ways I have found to help students with passing the ISEE entrance exam. It is a fantastic study skills program.

I work as a private tutor and test preparation materials are really important, so I thought I would share a critical review of this product. First of all, the questions in the product are fine. They are topically correct and I have not noticed any misprintings or serious typos. The explanations for the answers are also adequate. However, this book deviates from the way the official SSAT test review book is laid out. Furthermore, there are no time guidelines in this book: to find out how long each test is you must consult the official SSAT test prep book. Additionally, the sections of the verbal and reading comprehension occur in the wrong order in this book, and the publishers of this book do not provide an answer sheet. Thus the student cannot actually practice bubbling in answers. For some this may not be a big deal, but the point about standardized testing is to get good at standardized testing. I think the publishers of this book would do well to provide two test sheets along with their tests, to give timing guidelines, scoring guidelines and to make their product LOOK like an actual SSAT test. I therefore recommend it for practice questions, but not much else.

Review

"Our country faces huge challenges. Every Citizen must be healthy, creative and energetic if we are to adequately address those challenges. With Food, Dr. Mark Hyman has given every American a clear and straightforward field manual on how to get and stay healthy, for themselves and for our country. We must get a little healthier now or the cost of health care will sink our economy in the not too distant future. This practical book could not have come at a better time."―Congressman Tim Ryan, Ohio, author of The Real Food Revolution"Just about every time someone leaves the doctor's office, they are told to exercise and eat well. Sadly, at this point in our collective human history, there is still not wide consensus on how to do either properly. With nutrition in particular, it feels like near daily whiplash. Yesterday coconut oil seemed a panacea, by tomorrow you may hear it causes heart disease. Dr. Mark Hyman, who has diligently dedicated his life to wellness, has a new book that may offer some much-needed relief. Food goes between the lines of nutrition research, providing a clear roadmap for the confused eater."―Sanjay Gupta, MD"Dr. Hyman eloquently answers what may well be the most important question we all ask ourselves every day. Food brings the very best in nutritional science to a place of clarity and implementation for everyone."―--David Perlmutter, MD, author of Grain Brain and Brain Maker"Mark Hyman knows as much about food and our health as any human being alive. His new book, Food, is an invaluable guide to what we should eat and, perhaps more importantly, what we shouldn't, to get healthy and stay healthy."―Gary Taubes, author of The Case Against Sugar"Finally, a book that puts common sense and integrity back into the discussion about what to eat -- despite decades of being fed a steady diet of nonsense by so-called 'trusted authorities.' Bravo, Dr. Hyman. this book is good medicine."―Christiane Northrup, MD"Food has turned out to be a much more powerful medicine than we were all taught, yet for so many of us, the many different diets available paint a confusing picture. In his new book, Dr. Mark Hyman has provided exactly what we need: an expert analysis, clear-headed description, and effective solution to what the heck we should all be eating to optimize our health and longevity. This may be the most important book you read on this critical topic, and Dr. Hyman is one of the precious few with both the expertise and writing skill to make this information available and digestible."―Dale Bredesen, MD, author of The End of Alzheimer's "In a world of increasing dietary anxiety, Dr. Hyman offers a roadmap to respecting food as medicine."―Mehmet Oz, MD"In the diet wars, no battle is more contentious than low-fat vegan versus high-fat paleo. Mark Hyman finds common ground with paleo-vegan ('Pegan'), a plant-based diet supplemented moderately with animal foods (as 'condi-meat'). Food offers a delicious recipe for restoring our health, as we care for the planet."―David Ludwig, MD, PhD, author of Always Hungry?"Food and the way we produce and consume it is at the center of most of our world's health, environmental, climate, economic, and even political crises. With his new book, Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?, Mark Hyman, MD, shows us that food is powerful medicine, and it contains information that speaks to our environment and our genes, programming our body with messages of health or illness."―Deepak Chopra"Food is at the center of our well-being, and how we get our food is directly connected to the health of our planet. But we're drowning in bewildering information and advice about what to eat. In his new book, Food, Mark Hyman, MD, breaks down all the science into practical advice about what to eat and what to avoid. This is a manual for how the food we eat can help us thrive."―Arianna Huffington, author of Thrive

Pros: nicely organized, easy to understand, addresses all food groups and from different aspects (health, environment)Cons: nothing new here, slightly contradictory at timesFirst off, I am a fan of Dr. Hyman. I think this book is well done and very informative, especially if you are new to reading about nutrition or current scientific findings on the subject. I do think it’s worth noting his diet is more along the lines of Paleo, so if you’re vegan you won’t like this book. Many times he states the pitfalls of vegan diets but he does talk extensively on the importance of vegetables. Most, if not all, of this information is available on his social media or through other paleo/Whole food blogs. Lastly, he contradicts some times. For example, stating you need 30g of protein 3x a day but then saying he only eats meat as a condiment, legumes rarely and plants should be 50-75% of our plate. I find it difficult to eat this much protein if limiting both legumes and meat and also focusing on low carb vegetables. Another example is the back and forth on beans in general, one paragraph they’re packed with nutrients, another paragraph they’re anti-nutrient and off just full of too many carbs. Another example, dairy: he goes back and forth on the pros and cons so much that you’re left still not knowing if you should eat it.So that’s why I took off two stars: info already available online and it’s conflicting at times. Otherwise, it’s well done.I recommend it if you aren’t vegan and if you are absolutely in the dark on current nutrition/food quality.

Dr Mark Hyman is one of the few consistently accurate experts on evidence-based nutrition, who is a badly needed, fearlessly strong, voice against Big Food. And an even stronger voice advocating for the health of our country. I trust him because he does not shill fake information to make money. He is not a sell out. He’s the real deal. His evidence-based reference section is 30 pages long, & about 19 references per page. Perfect for arguing science to those who insist that reading only headlines, & social media, are accurate sources of nutrition information. It is clearly indexed on 12 specific food groups (meat, poultry/eggs, milk/dairy, fish/seafood, vegetables, fruit, fats/oils, beans, grains, nuts/seeds, sugar/sweeteners & beverages). In each food group he discusses the science, what the experts got right & wrong about the food group, what we still don’t know for sure, things you should know about the food group & what you should eat/avoid in that food group. After those sections, he further patiently spells out what to keep out of your food. In case you haven’t already gotten the idea in Part II.He goes into a 10 day detox diet, & provides a meal plan & fabulous recipes. His recipes are the best; They’re delicious & healthy. Tonight I’m making his herb-marinated chicken breasts.I pre-ordered & got the book the day it dropped. Already I’ve highlighted & bookmarked half of it. I used it today @ work, while teaching my diabetes class, to answer a question about raw milk (p. 89).Dr. Hyman, thank you for another great book. You keep out-doing yourself. And I use your Blood Sugar Solution recipes weekly.

I have mixed thoughts on the quality of this book. For starters, I have been researching about nutrition for years now and just recently stumbled on Dr. Hyman and his methodology. I am also studying in medical school right now, so I feel I have some credibility when talking about this stuff. Let's start with the good points. This book is a great guide for those who are just starting out. It can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know a lot of it, but he does a good job of making you realize that there are a lot of problems with the conventional American diet, especially the foods that the media and lobbying industries are marketing towards us. His biggest pro is the fact that he is preaching on many topics that have been (in my opinion) firmly established in the literature already. For instance, unnatural carbs (ex. grains, processed foods, etc.) are NOT needed at all, so avoiding these makes obvious sense. This is why diets like keto are so popular right now; people are ridding themselves of mostly carbs, which in turn drastically cuts down on the amount of calories one eats each day. Generally, he does a good job addressing the major food groups and gives a nice, easily-accessible list at the end of each chapter on what foods to avoid and to get more of. In a world of confusion on what to eat, Dr. Hyman does a nice job of mapping out a starting point by which to become healthier and more vibrant. Some of the main takeaways I got from his book are that organic/minimally processed foods are best (mostly because of the added chemicals in our foods); the messages by the government are very biased; and that moderation really is the key to a healthy lifestyle.I do, however, have quite a lot of gripes with his content. His book reeks of confirmation bias. I'm guessing that he selectively included studies from authors who he works with regularly to fit the narrative he wants to advocate. Obviously this happens with any writer, but it's a problem when someone writes a no-nonsense guide to eating healthy and only includes information on the bias he has. The reality is that nutrition information is not set in stone, and many of the topics he talks about are non conclusive enough to give an affirmative answer. Some of the examples include:1) Dairy: His main arguments for not consuming milk are that it's inflammatory and that it leads to cancer. For me, I don't have issues with digesting dairy at all, so that part of his argument is thrown out immediately. Second, his argument that dairy leads to cancer is non-conclusive. He pretty much says that research suggests there is a link between dairy and cancer, but that could be said for so many things. He doesn't mention much about the benefits of dairy, including its protein content, natural sugars, healthy fats and vitamins, etc. Long story short, he doesn't comprehensively convince me that dairy should be avoided. Yes, I will try to go organic when I can, but organic dairy is four times as expensive as non-organic dairy.2) Beans: His main arguments for avoiding beans is that they are inflammatory and have high carbohydrates contents. Yes, these probably should be avoided if you're diabetic or insulin-resistant (as should most carbs in that case). However, once again I don't have issues digesting beans, and I find that their fiber content is world's better than any other foods I eat. One serving of beans makes me regular for days. Apart from incredible amounts of fiber, beans have lots of protein, micronutrients, and are very satiating. What about the difference between canned beans and dry beans?3) Grains: His main argument for avoiding grains are that they are just like sugar when digested. Yes, this is true. However, what about whole grains? He doesn't talk enough about the difference between whole grains and highly processed grains. This makes it difficult to make a decision---should I avoid grains altogether or just processed ones?Overall, his main weakness is that what he says isn't clearly convincing. Yes, I will try to buy organic foods when possible and yes I will try to limit the carbs I consume. However, I don't know necessarily what ultimate decision to make. These foods exist on a spectrum (ex. juice vs. natural fruit, ice cream vs. whole milk, etc.) What should I do? Furthermore, the type of diet he advocates is far out of reach for most people in society. It's just too expensive and not convenient in the slightest. This book will absolutely help those who are eating only junk food, but it isn't necessarily helpful for those are in-shape, workout regularly, don't have the money and/or time, and want to live a moderate lifestyle. I wish he had spent more time telling me about the complete pros and cons of each food group and allowing me to make a decision on my own, but instead he picks a side (ex. beans are mostly bad) and goes with that one side. A good researcher discusses both sides on a topic, but unfortunately Dr. Hyman chose to ignore some of the information that would have weakened his arguments and bias.

Dr. Hyman doesn’t pull any punches when he talks about what Big Food has done to our food. His outrage is clear and I share it. This book is straight forward as he analyzes each food group telling us how we got so much so,wrong. When I finish reading about each food group I know what to avoid and what to eat. Best nutrition book I’ve ever read and I have a few in my bookcase.
