The same great story I remember from my childhood; however the book was in kind of rough shape for “Very Good” condition. My daughter loves the book, though! It does have the word “piss” on the fourth or fifth page, and since my kiddo is only 5, we just skipped over it.

I am a teacher of 5th grade and yearly do a unit about Pioneer life from a child's perspective. Always looking for books to really have children understand what life was like during this time period. Marissa Moss has written an exceptional book. Very interesting characters and great details about specific parts of the westward journey. I was compelled to write a review because I felt others would benefit from reading this book. I look forward to checking out other books by this author.

This is a fictional book, yet it is based on the experiences of real women and real children's perspective as they travel westward.The author compiled information from many sources of the time, including journals, diaries and pioneer guidebooks. She noted that the viewpoint held by women/children was much different from that of the men who made these journeys.All of the major incidents the young girl, Rachel, records are factual, taken from the voices of many young ones journals. Marissa Moss found that these pioneers' journals reflected an eagerness, actually a great will to cross this land to a better life. Their spirit was amazing, given what they could possible face as they traveled, and yet a sense of adventure prevailed throughout their journeys.I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves the romance of western lore. If you find the draw of the western era appealing, you'll love this book.

This was a gift for a niece and she is enjoying it very much. Good reading for a 9 to 12 year old girl.

I purchased a classroom set of these books to share with my fourth grade students as we learned about Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail. We read this during Guided Reading and my students created their own Oregon Trail Journal's during Writer's Workshop. Rachel's Journal gave them a perspective that they didn't have before we read the books and the journals that they created were amazing!!! I even e-mail the author and she e-mailed me back. These are great books to help tie in your social studies curriculum to your reading curriculum. These are a must have in your classroom if you study Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail. I'm going to also add Emma's Journal: The Story of a Colonial Girl to my classroom this next year.

The extra thick font and very close spacing is not at all conducive to reading with the eyes of a ten-year-old.It is also a pamphlet size. I would have returned it but it simply is not worth the postage.

The authors definitely spent some time researching for this book. The result is a candid, close look at a guitar legend that died so young.This book goes beyond the rock star image and shows the human side of SRV. He was human and imperfect. He fought a lot of battles with addiction and in the end he conquered the drugs and alcohol while still actively maintaining his musical career.It's a story of an insecure boy's determination and dedication to the craft of playing guitar that led him to stardom.Along the way he lived the lifestyle that other famous musicians experienced, his story is that of a survivor and arguably one of the most gifted guitarists of our time. And he never forgot the roots of the blues and the musicians that started it all.I always liked Stevie Ray Vaughan's music, and after reading this book I have a deeper appreciation for his music.

After reading several other biography's of SRV including the monster 2 volume day after day, night after night. This book approaches the subject matter less starry eyed. If you were in the Dallas. Austin musicians circle of the mid 70 to mid 80's this is exactly the kind of behind the scenes only you could put together. Hats off the Joe for producing such a honest look at a very talented kid, who had exactly the same faults many of us, either have or have seen in others. Being a broke musician and bumming around for paying gigs (sometimes in places less than pleasant). To be with your friends and play your music for the love of it. That's paying your dues.This is the first book that I can honestly say, I'll read again over the summer. No where else have I heard Tommy's nickname, or some of the nick names given to Stevie by his band mates. Certainly there's information here you'll find no where else.. I couldn't put it down and at about a inch think, I finished it in just a few days. If you're a SRV fan, and a fan of the blues/rock crossover, I think you'll like this rags to riches to near death to full life.... and back story.

Gave to my Son as gift, he is big Stevie Ray fan. I purchased previously for myself and it is a must read for all fans of the late SRV.

I originally bought this book in 1993 when it came out. Just an amazing biography fitting for arguably the most amazing guitar player of all time. The worst part of the book is the ending. You know the outcome you just keep hoping the story doesn’t end as it actually did.

Great book, could not put it down. Had been wanting to read a book on Stevie Ray Vaughn for years. Saw him in concert in 82 in Detroit Cobo Hall as warmup band for Bob Seger. Have all Stevies albums/CD's and this book was a great read. I've since loaned it to numerous people who wanted to read it. Highly recommend.

Very detailed. The author conducted what must have been hundreds of interviews with friends, acquaintances and family. He consulted as many newspaper and magazine articles and no doubt walked the streets of Austin and Oak Cliff. The result is a detailed description of his subject and the environment. Yet it's not a forest for the trees situation. The details do not drown out the overall story. Sometimes excessive details can make a book boring or hard to follow. Not in this case.The author begins the story with the Vaughan's migration to Texas from Kentucky. He also describes the evolution of Dallas as a music town starting as early as Blind Lemon Jefferson. Stevie's years as a school boy in Dallas, his years playing small clubs in Austin, and his nonpublic life are described in as much detail perhaps more indepthly than his life as a famous blues superstar.SRV lived his entire life the same way he played guitar: pedal to the metal. Drugs, girls, partying, jamming were all done fast and hard until he passed out from exhaustion. After 18 hours or more of sleep, it would start all over again.After decades of life pedal to the metal it is amazing that he survivied. But he didn't just survive. He cleaned himself up and became a better person. It seems like he was a nice person. He spent a lot of effort helping other musicians especially underappreciated blues musicians. He insisted that his Double Trouble bandmates received the same salary as he even though clearly SRV was the only reason people came to see Double Trouble.The book also explores the mystery of the 1982 Montreaux Jazz Festival performance where the band was booed. Besides a couple of freaked out hippies dancing in front, the rest of the crowd (probably arthouse goons) sat and watched the performance in contempt and booed enthusiastically in between songs. The book offers an explanation, but perhaps in some minds the crowd's behavior at that event will remain an enigma.Summary: good book, well written. If you like SRV, then you won't regret having gotten this book.

Before reading the book, I knew little of the man, yes I was familiar with his music but knew little of his background etc. So an education and interesting, but totally tragic story.

This past Friday, on November 2, 2018, for example, the free books were: Babylon, Anne Frank, Spartacus and the Slave Wars, Byzantine Empire, Hittites, and Alexander the Great. Babylonia had a significant effect upon the life, philosophy, and theology of early Judaism and, hence, also on later Christianity and Islam. Although not discussed in this volume, it is likely that when the Judeans were exiled to Babylon, they accepted the Babylonian calendar, begining the day in the evening rather than the morning, making the year start in the fall rather than the spring as required by Exodus 12. Also, it was in Babylonia that the Babylonian Talmud was composed.The Hourly History book is only 41 pages. It tells readers much about Babylon, that Babylon was a city in Mesopotamia and that there were many different Babylons in the same area in different times, ruled by different people with different beliefs and activities. Sumerians settled in the area around 3,000 BCE. The city of Babylon was around 60 miles from modern day Baghdad. The meaning of Babylon is obscure, but it may mean “God’s Gate.” One of its famed kings was Hammurabi who expanded the area and named his kingdom Babylonia. Around 1792, he developed a code of 282 laws for his kingdom. Many of the laws are quite harsh as, for example, “an eye for an eye” did not mean monetary compensation as the rabbis interpreted the biblical version, but the removal of a person’s eye if he cut out the eye of another.We read how Babylonia lost its power several times and then regained it. How in 722 BCE, Sargon of Assyria, who had conquered and ruled over Babylonia for a time, destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel, and exiled the inhabitants who became lost to history, the Lost Ten Tribes. But, in 612 BCE, Babylonia regained power and destroyed the Assyrian capital Nineveh, which is mentioned in the biblical book Jonah, and ended the Assyrian empire.Nebuchadnezzar II became one of the kings of Babylonia, ruled for over forty-years, conquered Judea in 586 BCE and forced many Judeans to live in Babylonia. In 539, Babylonia was attacked and soon defeated by Cyrus who allowed the Judeans to return to Judea, but most Judeans chose to remain in Babylonia as many American Jews chose America as their homeland today.Alexander the Great came to the area of Judea in 332 BCE on his way to conquer Egypt and the Greeks who came with him brought many philosophical and theological concepts that many Jews accepted. He conquered Babylon and thought to make it his capital but died at age 32 before he could do so.The book concludes by telling us that “One of the reasons that Babylon became such surpassing interest to European historians and archeologists is its association with [what is stated in] the Bible.” And this final chapter sites biblical references to Babylon. These include the tower of Babel, mentioned in Genesis, which may refer to the very tall religious structures in Babylon called ziggurats, and to the description in the biblical book Daniel how the Babylonians had festive meals using articles stolen from the Jewish temple.

An interesting enough summary of the 'life and times' of Babylon, but: describing the series of wars, kings, regression and rebuild becomes rather lackluster reading.The city sure had some ups and downs before disappearing completely.It seems as though the peoples of earth have constantly been at war somewhere......

A nice read about the history of Babylon. The actual location of many of the cities mentioned is rather speculitive but you are going back about 4000 years so that is to be expected. It is interesting to see how the shift in power happenes when each new ruling class takes control.

An enlightening read for a Christian like me. The final chapter with biblical references was good as several references in previous chapters raised my interest. The overview in this book begins to paint an interesting picture of where she came from and whatever happened to her. But even after reading this, the mysteries are deep enough to make one want to dig a little deeper into the various eras involved.

It presents a pretty good overview of the city throughout the ages with some interesting facts along the way. It is relatively short, so of course you’re getting the highlights.For many people, long books with this sort of material would be very dry, but the length is good and it is a fairly quick and interesting read.

Really enjoyed this history of the famous city of Babylon. Learned it was not just a single city that existed over centuries. Rather it was a series of rulers and people's over time.

Nice read and certainly gives a brief informative history of Babylon. Not the most exciting, but still a good read.

I received my copy of Quiet Strength from the hands of Coach Dungy himself on the day the book was released in Atlanta, GA. The humble man from Jackson, MI was wearing the Super Bowl ring as he handed me the autographed book.This is an extremely well written book! I was a big fan of Coach Dungy from his Tampa Bay Buc days (I am a Buc and Jaguar fan) and because like him I ended up in Indiana about the same time that he moved up here, I've followed his career up here--but this book unveals so much about the man and how his faith helps him to interpret the events of his life--both the good and the bad.What many people would consider insignificant events, Coach Dungy helps the reader to reevaluate and to see in their correct light. I think anyone who reads this book will come away a better person than they were before they read the book--truly a mark of a great book, but also a mark of the quiet strength that motivate Tony Dungy!

I honestly would not have picked up this book if I were not a huge Colts fan. Tony Dungy is very reserved, so I was expecting Quiet Strength to be dry and boring. However, it was the exact opposite. The book was inspirational, with unexpected bits of humor here and there.Dungy takes us through his childhood, spends the majority of the chapters reminiscing about his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and finishes the book with the Colts and their Super Bowl win. The book is not a book about football, but since football is a large part of Dungy's life, it is hard to imagine him writing a book about life's principles and practices when they are so tied to his life as a football player and coach. However, you don't have to know anything about football to enjoy this book.I am not a religious person, but Dungy obviously is. Throughout the book, he quotes scriptures from which he has learned or applied lessons. Dungy talks about praying before making decisions and about living life to serve Him. However, none of it came across as pushy. I am an atheist, but this book made me interested in reading the Bible for educational purposes.From this book, you get the feeling that Tony Dungy a real person with real highs and lows in his life. And yet through it all, he remains humble and strong. He truly cares and truly has a good heart. He is an excellent role model for people of all walks of life.When I finished this book, it made me want to be a better person. It made me want to arrange my priorities in life so that the most important things are placed first. You know, stop and smell the flowers. And for that, I thank Dungy and Whitaker for their message and hard work.On a side note, if you were expecting Dungy to talk a lot about his relationship with Peyton Manning, prepare to be disappointed. He talks about the Bucs more than the Colts. He mentions a few things in there about #18, but nothing that fans of Manning wouldn't already know.Overall, a good and easy read.

This book simply tells the life of Tony Dungy. There is so much to be learned of his character. I wouldn't label it has a personal development book that gives you step by step instructions . You will simply learn from his example and the life he has life. He is AMAZING and has become somebody that I look up to and have a great appreciation for his character. Not a life changing book but i am super glad I read it and it added value into my life.

I knew almost nothing about Tony Dungy's life and career when I selected this book to give as a gift for Operation Kindness at our church (I thought the men in our military would relate to a football coach and grow spiritually from reading his memoir). When I received it, I glanced through it to see if I thought my brother-in-law would like it. I quickly became intrigued and bought myself a copy. I just finished the book and have to say it is one of my all-time favorite reads. Though I could not be more different than Tony Dungy, I learned so much about how to live my life as a Christian - I am blown away. I am eager to apply these principles in both my spiritual life and my business life.

This is a very readable book, especially if you like sports. It claims to "not be all about football;" but that can be disputed unless you look deeper into the football stories.Tony gives a lot of autobiographical examples (mostly about sports); but he follows with what he learned and how the learning affected his parenting, coaching, and relationship to God.We are using this in a men's Sunday School class that is "discussion based." We are not limited by a strict weekly schedule that requires that we cover a chapter per week, etc. Thus we can stop and chew the nuggets that Tony gives us. We use them to discuss how we grow, mature, relate to God; and affect others.There is a Study Guide; but I find it less useful in our environment since we are used to picking items to plumb. For a group that wants a strict schedule and some help with prompting questions, get the Guide.
