Walking the Gobi

Walking the Gobi: A 1600-Mile Trek Across a Desert of Hope and Despairby Helen ThayerAt the age of 63, Helen Thayer fulfilled her lifelong dream of crossing Mongolia's Gobi Desert. Accompanied by her 74-year-old husband Bill and two camels, Tom and Jerry, Thayer walked 1600 miles in 126-degree temperatures, battling fierce sandstorms, dehydration, dangerous drug smugglers, and ubiquitous scorpions. For more than 60 days Helen struggled to keep moving through this inhospitable terrain despite a severe leg injury. Without sponsors, a support team, or radio contact, hers is a journey of pure discovery and adventure.Walking the Gobi takes readers on a trip through a little-known landscape and introduces them to the culture of the nomadic people whose ancestors have eked out an existence in the Gobi for thousands of years. Thayer's respect and admiration for the culture of Gobi and her gentle weaving of natural history shine throughout this remarkable story. The author proves that Baby Boomers don't have to take life lying down-their adventures have just begun. Product Code: 0646 Pages: 272 ISBN: 978-1-59485-064-6 Binding Information: Paperback Publisher: The Mountaineers Books Publication date: 7/30/2007 Color: no

In comparison to other books, such as Walking Home from Mongolia this book falls a bit short. The author and her husband were very well supplied and while they dealt with many physical challenges, most of them seemed to stem from their prior automobile accident. I'm confident the conditions were harsh, but the writing style for me never really captured those environmental challenges and eventually the book became a boring read. Kudos however to the author and her husband for their accomplishment.

Miss Thayer and her husband walked across the Gobi desert, which sits on the border of Mongolia and China. This is all the more audacious because they're both in their 60's and 70's. They plan and practice for the trek and are by no means unexperienced at a trip like this. But the unexpected does arise and Thayer shares these with candor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, feeling as if I'd made the journey with them. I'll always think of their two camels, Tom and Jerry, with fondness.

Great book. A real adventure type story in a place there isn't much written about. Well, not much written about that you would actually "want" to read. The one thing that frustrated me so much in this book, and has nothing to really do with the book itself as much as my relating to it, is the authors inability to let go of western schedule and thinking. To the point that they would take chances with their lives to stay on their "schedule". Having traveled to and been in situations like this, I have to say, stop. If something isn't working, than don't stand by it simply because that is what you do. Change it!!! Your in the Gobi desert. Schedules need to be very fluid and you need to have an "openmindedness" to change, especially if the consequences could be potentially life threatening. Totally frustrated me. Almost as if the author made it harder on herself. Other than that, great book. Very well written and held my interest throughout. Almost wish it was longer. Highly recommended.

After reading "Polar Dream" I knew "Walking the Gobi" would be good, but I couldn't imagine it could be as good. Well, I stand corrected--it was every bit as good, and what a journey by Helen and Bill. It's a good narrative of the cultures and hardships of the desert, as well as the determination of the couple to continue.Next is "3 Among the Wolves."

I've read all of Helen Thayer's personal adventure books now: I wish there were more of them! She (& hubby) are an amazing couple! I wish she'd write about their 4000 mile trek across the Sahara! I particularly love reading about their year living among the wolves in the North of Canada/Alaska. Their experience there was phenomenal!

Wow! The author, and adventurer, Helen Thayer gives an excellent portrayal of her journey through the Gobi! I could have read this in a day, but I kept re-reading chapters over and over. I felt like I was right there in the desert with Helen and Bill. I even got thirsty while reading the book!To be honest, I didn't even pick this book. I am part of a book group and the book was picked for me. And my first reaction was why did they walk through the desert, give me a break. But as I read the book, and learned in detail of the Nomads in the dessert, I realized that I would have never 'met' these wonderful people had Bill and Helen not shared this experience with me.Also, now this is deep, but it is somewhat metaphoric as we are all walking our Gobi's right now. Whether you are a person recovering from cancer, looking for a job, getting married, suffering a loss, fighting an illness, going to school, or you may be a college student who is getting ready to graduate and start life. We are all walking our Gobi's.It reminds me, us, that we can not just sit and let life pass us by but we must take advantage of this FULL wonderful life and seize every moment.POWERFUL! Inspiring! Full of Hope!I look forward to reading more of the Thayer's adventures!

Have a glass of water handy when you read this book; it WILL make you thirsty. I enjoyed it so much that I bought her other books about exploring the arctic and living with (to observe) wolves. All three are excellent armchair adventures. Of special interest were observations of the natives in the area, their cultures and interactions.

Mostly interesting, but deteriorated into a weird "scared I'm going to be raped" scenario that was just not.

From the Back Cover

"Data Structures and Algorithms in Java, Second Edition" is designed to be easy to read and understand although the topic itself is complicated. Algorithms are the procedures that software programs use to manipulate data structures. Besides clear and simple example programs, the author includes a workshop as a small demonstration program executable on a Web browser. The programs demonstrate in graphical form what data structures look like and how they operate. In the second edition, the program is rewritten to improve operation and clarify the algorithms, the example programs are revised to work with the latest version of the Java JDK, and questions and exercises will be added at the end of each chapter making the book even more useful. Educational Supplement Suggested solutions to the programming projects found at the end of each chapter are made available to instructors at recognized educational institutions. This educational supplement can be found at www.prenhall.com, in the Instructor Resource Center.

As someone who does not come from a computer science background but works as a software engineer, I've had learning data structures and algorithms on my bucket list for quite some time. Working within the Ruby on Rails and SQL worlds has had me heavily shielded from the ideas and concepts of DS&A. My primary goal was to learn enough to pass the stereotypical Google/Amazon/Microsoft/Yahoo coding exam as well as conduct a similar engineering interview from the opposite end of the table. Since textbooks are my preferred way of learning, I set out in search of the DS&A book that would allow me to reach that goal. Most guru lists will tell you that "Introduction to Algorithms" aka "CLRS" is the book to buy in this field. I would strongly disagree with this notion unless the reader is already very savvy in DS&A as well as mathematics. From my experience interviewing dozens of engineers over the last few months, a very small percentage of engineers are actually at that level. Similar lists recommend Skiena's book as an alternative to CLRS since it is slightly more accessible. Although I didn't look at Skiena's book as thoroughly as I did CLRS, it didn't seem to be much more beginner friendly. I initially ended up buying the "DS&A Made Easy" book--the reviews were good, the pages available via Amazon preview looked good, the book focused on DS&A from an interview perspective rather than mathematical proofs, and I also liked the author's stated approach (get something working, even if its terribly inefficient...then work on efficiency). Then the book came in the mail. After a week of browsing through the text, I actually threw the book in the trash. The English was bad, the code examples weren't well written, and there was a lot of hand waving where there shouldn't have been. Then I found LaFore. His writing is extremely clear and never pretentious. The order in which he tackles DS&A topics is much more logical than the other texts I've seen. The Java code in each of the in-chapter exercises works perfectly. The charts and drawings are very helpful. The author knows exactly how far to take the discussion so that the reader is learning a concept thoroughly but not being beaten over the head with it or taken too far down the rabbit hole. I became more comfortable with the Java language itself working through the coding problems in this book than I did using a pure "Learn Java"-type book in the past. I read this book cover to cover over the course of a few months and can't say enough good things about it. No longer are DS&A initimidating to me.The chapters are as follows:1 Overview2 Arrays3 Simple Sorting4 Stack and Queues5 Linked Lists6 Recursion7 Advanced Sorting8 Binary Trees9 Red-Black Trees10 2-3-4 Trees11 Hash Tables12 Heaps13 Graphs14 Weighted Graphs15 When to Use WhatFor me, the most difficult subjects by far were recursion and red-black trees. In fact, unlike any of the other topics listed above, coding a red-black tree is beyond the scope of this book.In summary, this book may be the best technical text I have ever read (and I usually read 3-4 per year). I've read a handful of technical textbooks that were about simpler topics, were more complex reads, and I would still consider them good to great books. In fact, LaFore's DS&A book is so exceptional that I even considered buying his 11 year old C++ book to learn C++, even though learning C++ isn't on my bucket list.My recommendation list for DS&A related works is as follows:-If you are a DS&A beginner, choose LaFore's DS&A in Java book (most people fall into this category).-If you are looking for more formal technical interview prep, buy one of Gayle Laakman's books as a companion piece. Laakman's works typically don't teach you DS&A themselves but prepare you for how you'll typically see them in an interview.-If you are already very strong in DS&A and are looking for something beyond what you'd see in a typical technical interview, look into CLRS, Skiena, Sedgewick (who LaFore strongly recommends for further reading) or if you're really an expert--(gulp) Donald Knuth.

This is the book that will teach one the fundamentals of data structures in such a way that even people with little programming experience can follow through and understand. It also launches one into the proper settings for developing algorithms through thinking about efficiency. My recommendation would be to study this book first before any advanced algorithms book. It's easy to read and understand. Also try to do the review questions and the programming projects as they help to reinforce the topics discussed.

Wonderful book for clarifying a topic often obfuscated by rigorous mathematical legalese. I was able to implement many of the algorithms and data structures by the rhetoric alone and without looking at the code.

love this textbook. great for someone who doesn't even know java as the first chapter explains what you would need to know to follow the code. end of the book provides even better sources for this topic, although the book does a great job. learned what i came for.

This is an excellent book on Data Structures and Algorithms, for some reason my teach chose a book that isn't nearly as good, but this one really helped me to understand what the different algorithms are doing. Especially some of the more abstract ones like Hash Tables and Graphs.

I like the way Lafore derives algorithms in simple terms. Would love to see a modern updated version of this book. Other Java Algorithm books I've looked at did not have all the practical examples Lafore does, or they leave the practical examples to the problems which is not very convenient if you are looking for an implementation.

Easily the best introduction book for learning Data Structures and Algorithms. While there are superior books about DS&A, most of them require a deeper knowledge of general Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics to really grok. I found Mr. Lafore's book gets the point across in a manner that allows a developer to effectively use DS&A's without all the ceremony. I read this book ahead of taking formal classes in Data Structures and Algorithms and made these courses a breeze.

Awesome book to refresh data structures and algorithms for interview prep. The hash table section is terrific ..my fav book. Only critic is i didn;t care for the accompanying sample code and interjection of it inside the chapters - author should take those out to make it more concise.

So many horrible things in this book. The fact one reviewer was upset primarily with animal cruelty stuns me. Horrendous ending. Hey i murdered 2 people..... oh well probably drunk.

This was a good book overall but I struggled through some s!ow parts. I wondered why drinking was such a big part of the book and the friendship between the two main characters. Despite my criticism I am glad I finished the book.

The plot started out holding my attention but half way through it began to drag. Way to long and the ending just hit bam and that was the end. I was very ready for it to be over.

Sorry but this book was ridiculous and juvenile. Maybe I missed that it was written for young adults?

**UPDATE 3/5/19: The publishing company just notified me that in the final edition of the book, amendments were made regarding the animal cruelty. I'm thankful.**Have YOU ever been part of a toxic relationship? Her Closest Friend gets down and dirty with this very topic...in the most twisted way possible. This story had the potential to be truly phenomenal. Unfortunately, it's absolutely littered with unlikable characters, boundless repetition, horrifying animal torture/death (which I do not appreciate at all...it's a trigger for me), and writing which struggled to rein the plot in--it felt unnecessarily long to me.The story foreshadows a seismic conclusion...and it delivers. I always appreciate when authors push limits and write endings which may or may not resonate with readers. The ending was depressing, but oddly appropriate, I think. While I know this isn't an overly positive review, I do want to mention the absolutely stunning book cover. All that shadowed white with a splash of red...the contrast is striking and beautiful.Despite my somewhat lackluster review, I want to give huge thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader's copy, in exchange for my honest review.1.5 stars

Naomi and Sophie have been friends for a long time, both now married with children. It starts out friendly as Naomi, her husband Charlie and their daughters Izzy and Diane head over to Sophie and Adam's house for the 8th birthday of their son Dylan. But all is not well with Sophie and Adam and a change is coming that will rock Sophie's world. But really, who in the history of writing fiction, doesn't have a secret or two, something that the author can use to rip the rug right out from under you(that's what makes for a compelling read, they all lived happily ever after, just doesn't cut it, IMHO).Well, let's just say that a secret will be revealed, which could change both their lives. And let's just say that one friend has had just about enough from this toxic friendship, and wants out. How far would you go, how much would you do, and by the way, could you prevent collateral damage along the way? That is all I am going to say about Her Closest Friend lest I tread into spoiler territory. A lot will be revealed and dare I say the ending was not for the faint of heart. My first book by Clare Boyd and I would definitely like to see what else she has got up her sleeve. A fast read and one where I really wanted to know how far Naomi and Sophie would go.I received a DRC from Bookouture through NetGalley.

I have read novels by Clare Boyd before and was excited to hear about this new book of hers. I was not disappointed. Two friends who have known each other for years. Shared memories, secrets, lies and betrayal. They have always been there for one another and had each other’s backs. Such close friends would always be there for one another… wouldn’t they?I enjoyed reading about Naomi and Sophie’s friendship and all the things they have gone through together. I found they had a somewhat questionable friendship, that was full of pettiness, jealousy and trying to outdo each other. They both seemed to pretend to be better friends than they actually were but in truth didn’t really seem to be all that fond of one another anymore but tried to keep up with appearances. It was interesting to read about their distrust, and disloyalty. Shouldn’t you be able to trust your closest friend? Both main characters were interesting to read about their different dynamics of their friendship and the two-facedness that came along with it. The plot unfolded nicely and I enjoyed the fast paced nature of the book. It definitely had me turning the pages. These ladies have a unique friendship for sure!I enjoyed this book and found it to be an addictive read from cover to the end. I am sure you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Make sure to check this book out now!

If I were to speak of this book in one word it would be "stunning" which is a word so overused in reviews that it almost means nothing but I mean it literally. At the end, I was absolutely stunned and it took awhile to recover from the final twist.I am also overwhelmed by its complexity, which makes it a challenge for me to review. In the tradition of Alice Walker and Toni Morrison, she writes a novel that questions, critiques and gives loving homage to the survivors, the marginalized, the lost in her culture of origin. It is a ghost story--the ghost is a real ghost but also represents the secret that is destroying the Mittal family. This family exists and is also haunted by the remains of British colonialism in the late 1940's, post-partition.There is a strong feminist vein and the white feminist American reader (that would be me) may be tempted to be very critical of the ways tradition has marginalized some women, the very poor and those who cannot meet traditional heterosexual norms* in India; however, I believe we should be doing that with our own culture first--then looking at what is similar and what is different--for there is something very universal and deeply human about her themes and characters. I will read this book again, knowing the secret that is drives the core of the book, with new insights the characters' motives and decisions.

I liked it because it was so authentic. I had to stop and look up every few lines a word that was unfamiliar to me but I loved feeling like I was a fly on the wall in a traditional Indian household. The story was also told in a fashion that was so different from ordinary ghost stories.,

I was in India while I read this book, and I just loved the writer's voice, her depictions of the old house, and the fact that she really captured what it's like to be a strong woman in a society that doesn't empower women. It's a properly good ghost story and very dark and atmospheric. I really want to see what this writer does next. READ it!

"Haunting Bombay" took a couple of chapters to grab my attention. But once it did, I stayed up all night reading it. It is so rich in details, I felt completely transported to India. I could smell the rain and taste the chutney. Characters are well developed and the story is full of unexpected twists, and rich with quirky details that make it fully come alive. A wonderful summer read.

First ordered this book as a sample on my Kindle while looking for books to save for an upcoming trip. After reading the sample, I immediately purchased the whole book, and couldn't put it down until it was finished. Written with humor and insight into Indian life along with fantasy. If you enjoy reading, don't miss this entertaining and well-written story. I'll be looking forward to more books by this author.

At first I thought it would be not very good. Later, after about 50 pages, I really got in to it. I would hesitate to recommend it to people in general as I don't know if this novel is for everyone.

Beautiful book. Kept me intrigued until the last word. Although I don't believe in ghosts but I believed while reading this book. Love Indian novels and this one didn't disappoint.

Haunting Bombay by Shilpa Agarwal is exactly that - a very haunting and engrossing novel with a very gorgeous cover. I am always up for a good ghost story and this book definitely fit the bill for me. From the beginning of the book I was hooked and I just kept turning those pages in an attempt to find out what was going to finally happen. It was a book that kept me on the edge of my seat a bit while giving me shivers up and down my spine. The novel begins with us learning about Pinky, a thirteen year old girl living with her grandmother, aunt and uncle and her three male cousins. Pinky's own mother had died when she was just a baby and her grandmother Maji had taken over her care. They are one of the lucky families that have money so Pinky has never known any suffering in that way. However all is not rosey either. Pinky's aunt does not like her at all for reasons of her own and if not for Maji, who is the head of the family, Pinky would be off in a boarding school. All her life Pinky has wondered about the bathroom in their house though. It is bolted up nightly and not opened until morning. They are all forbidden to unbolt it yet no one will tell her why. Well one day Pinky becomes upset enough to throw caution to the wind and unbolt that door. By doing this Pinky unlocks secrets from the past along with a ghost bent on getting revenge. From this point things go from bad to worse in the Mittal household taking us on a suspense filled journey right up to the final twist at the end that I wasn't quite expecting. There are many things I enjoyed about this novel aside from the ghost story and all the suspenseful elements. I enjoyed reading about the Indian lifestyle a great deal. There are a lot of descriptions of the way the wealthy live and what they are privilege to, their religion, the area itself, and mostly the food. There were so many descriptions of the food they eat that my mouth was watering at how good it all sounded. I felt as though I got carried away to another world which I really did as their lives in India are so much more different than mine and I loved that aspect of the book. It was also interesting to read how much different men and women are treated and how many more opportunities are available to the men.If I had to say I had a favorite character it would be Pinky. For a young girl she really seemed quite mature in her thoughts and reasoning except of course for opening that forbidden door. However all the characters were well developed even the ghosts and you find yourself caring about them and what their lives had once entailed. I found the book beautifully written and found myself rereading many passages. This is Shilpa Agarwal's debut novel and if it's any indication of her writing style then I'm anxious for what she will write next.
