First, I don't know how anyone could possibly give this book only 2 stars (maybe their dog died that day and they were just in a bad mood). Look at the other ratings: so far, all 10 reviewers other than that one dude gave the book 5 stars. He is the outlier, not the norm.There is so much good information in this book: there is no filler - it's all quality, need-to-know material. This book is well worth the price ... and then some.This book uses C# in its code examples, but the majority of the book applies to Agile development in general, not being specifically tied to C#, or even to Microsoft. Think of it like Robert Martin's book Clean Code, which has Java code examples, but whose material applies to far more than just Java developers.

Definately a nice book to read, got a clear understanding of most concepts discussed in it.A reviewer said that it just provided an overview of the concepts... While it may be true, i feel like the only way to master these skills is to apply them in real world projects. You simply won't get good at software development by just reading books.The best way to learn from it is to read the whole thing the first time, and then get back in the book after you encounter a problem on your project.

I am not done with the book yet but even half way through I can say that every serious programmer has to read this book. I have a lot of books that are really great for references on how to most effectively use certain technologies. This is a very different book, though. It teaches you how to write code that is 'future-proof', i.e. that allows you to make changes to existing code without breaking other code that depends on the modified code. The importance of this cannot be overemphasized. Not only does it changes, unit tests, etc much easier but it also makes things so much easier for the users of your code, be it fellow programmers that base their code on your code, customers that use your libraries, etc.

Terrific book about architecture and design patterns. I would highly recomend this for software engineers and developers from intermediate to advanced. Kindle version is an exceptional value.

This book is recommended for any C# developer it's more than just a few design patterns some really useful things that I wanted always to know.

This is one of the most helpful software engineering books I've ever read. It is most useful for people who have some real world experience in .NET development. I couldn't have gotten so much out of the book without my last year of work developing API services for a major thermostat manufacturer.I've encountered a lot of the pain this book hopes to remove. I devoured this book. I read 10 chapters of it while on "vacation" and don't regret a minute spent reading it. I'm excited about taking the concepts one bite at a time and trying to integrate them into my real work. Great book.

David Abrams takes us on a journey back to ourselves and the route passes between the Scylla and Charybdis of discursive language. Abrams' thesis is that phonetic writing and the language associated with it separate us from the natural world. The primitive had language tied to the hunt and landscape; the modern has language in books and in his cerebrum. In one of the longer acts of irony I have ever observed, Abrams uses exquisite language to return us to an appreciation of and participation in the natural, "more than human" world from which he claims language has estranged us. His examples are marvelous. Consider the Judaic scholars of the early middle ages, penning their Torahs and other documents without vowels; this syntactical arrangement forced the reader to consider where "the wind is to blow" and in so blowing infuse language with the creative wind of God. But we are far from that today. Now we must put down our books, listen to the wind, and consider the hawk on its windhover. If we do we are returned to ourselves.

This book is probably one of the best books written. and I am a huge bibliophile. I wish I was eloquent at giving review because I can't give enough praise for Abram's work. He writes beautifully, and with excellent sources and scholarship, about the natural world and our perceptions and place in it. If this book were food - I'd eat it up. If you are looking to fall in love with the natural world in a way that changes your own - get ready for the most amazing ride.

A fascinating analysis of how written phonetic language has contributed to our cultural disengagement from the natural world, the author argues that beginning with the introduction of written language humanity began to lose its deep and profound connection with the natural world, replacing our perception of the language of nature with a kind of animistic interaction with written words. Thought-provoking, even if tedious at times. Whatever you think of the rest of the book, be sure not to miss the final chapter (Coda), which is brilliant and beautiful.As an aside, I tried the meditative technique the author recommends in Part II of Chapter 6 and was thrilled with the results. Highly recommended.

I have long loved this book. I had occasion to recommend it again, and also have a moment to write a note about it... a rare synchronicity! So this: The few other reviews do a great job of describing the framework of relationship of the human to 'other-than-human' as exemplified in the evolution of increasingly complex abstractions of our communication systems, from pictograph to alphabet. From representation to communication by agreement that a symbol, and its related sounds mean a thing.What is passed over is the weaving of the story between the technical and the experienced. So I introduced the book thusly: It is an interesting book that weaves two stories together.. One of the experienced, "Other-Than-Human" world - of all types, from animal to insect, and charting the path of the human communication from the pictorial representation of the world as experienced, to the abstractions that make up the alphabet and the dictionary of words. Most of which have little direct association w the thing they are describing. In that movement of what might be called sophistication, he posits that our human experience has become increasingly split off from the rest of the world as our filter of engagement & experiences with the Other World(s) is increasingly via the cognitive & descriptive and less of the wordless, amazed, truly "awe-some" experience. I know I feel this lack.It is split that creates so many of the large and complex problems we are dealing with today. We tend to think we understand the systems we are sometimes rather slapdashedly mucking around with... We do not. What we do not typically reckon with is how integrated life is. And that it is more than a hallmark card, or a sappy new age chant to say that everything is connected to everything...Not knowing this is central to what we call "unintended consequences", but really are more accurately "unconscious consequences". While we have also gained some learning and benefit from our reductionist science, there is no doubt of that... if we do not heed the opening introduction of this book, and its basic prescription for our consideration : That to be human... a vital, life living , life supporting person/life force we Must have some meaningful relationship with the Other-Than-Human.For other books that work out that thesis in fact if not directly I'd suggest The Elephant Whisperer, and related books. And almost anything by Carl Safina. Especially "Song of the Blue Ocean".

I'm not smart enough to summarize this book. The subjects covered are complicated but author writes in an interesting way. Even if the reader has trouble understanding this and some of terminology used, you will learn something. Gives credit where due for his ideas. This reading is, for me, something I have to go back over to better understand the ideas presented. Pushes your vocabulary. Sorry I can't better explain this but for me at least, this was difficult reading. Thought-provoking and interesting book.

When I read the description and reviews, I admit that I was expecting a more detailed picture book story than what is presented here. (I was thinking that maybe I would be surprised by a clever ending but it was more straight forward than that.) That being said, this is a good story. It is well-written and has interesting illustrations. The story is about how a family and eventually a town helps a Jewish family hide from the Nazis and escape to safety. This would be a good choice for a reader who may not have the attention span or maturity for a longer, sadder story but would still like to learn about WWII and have a discussion. (This could also be used in a discussion of the Underground Railroad as there are many parallels between the two.)

A picture book about the Holocaust for young children is tricky to pull off but Elvgren expertly does so by taking a discrete incident that involves a secret, something that appeals to all of us. In Nazi-occupied Denmark, Anett's family is hiding a Jewish woman and her son. As the soldiers close in, Annet comes up with a way to guide the two through the night, past the soldiers, to a fishing boat that will take them to safety in Sweden. Based on a true event, this story shows young readers how people can band together to overcome the frightening obstacles imposed on them in a terrible time and still come out triumphant.

My 10 year old son had the pleasure of reading this book. He loved the illustrations and like most boys, liked the mix of words and captivating visuals. But unlike most books, he actually thought about what he read and asked me further questions. He wanted to know where this took place, the historical theme and found the ending very positive and comforting. I recommend this book for parents that are looking for subtle, yet effective ways to teach important life lessons.

What a tough topic to tackle in a children's book! How do you convey the truth about the Holocaust without traumatizing a child? Elvgren succeeds. Deftly and gently told, her story introduces a reader to the grim facts while telling a true tale about courage in the face of danger. I hope teachers and librarians will take notice of this book. I foresee the story being the basis of many a thought-provoking discussion. A simple, yet profound story, beautifully told.

This little book retains its original format, giving the reader an opportunity to share it with children. While not really a "picture book" story, the charming drawings make sharing easy for a wide range of ages.This is a story to keep alive for everyone.

Simple but effective children's story about protecting families during the Holocaust.The colors of the illustrations added to the feeling of gloom which would have permeated the atmosphere.I think it would make curious children to want to know more.

Like all DK books, The Religions Book is an excellent resource. Beautiful, formatted well, easy to read. Fascinating subjects broken down into understandable overviews and reflections. You cannot go wrong when you buy a DK Publishing book. They are always written by reputable scholars, full of incredible illustrations or pictures, and a pure joy to read. You rarely even realize you are LEARNING! This book is no different. Buy it.BUT . . . DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. I have never seen a worse Kindle book. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle should be sent back to school (or prison?). You cannot read it on Kindle. You cannot read it on the PC. It pops up in a little box of tiny text that you cannot even zoom in comfortably to read! You cannot highlight. Just a terrible experience.It really is not fair that an awesome book like this gets its reviews skewed because whoever was in charge of the Kindle version RUINED it.I own a dozen or more DK books and treasure them all. The Kindle version is garbage, but the book itself is nearly perfect.

Just received the book, “The Religions Book”, “ Big ideas Simply Explained”, and after a cursory review I would give the book a B-. The book gives a synopsis of various religions both past and present. The actual issue that I ran into was on page 334. While the paragraph at the beginning of the page appears concise, the material afterwards about The Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches is a bit misleading because of the language/grammar used. The author(s) state that the Roman Catholic Church originates during the 1st century CE, and that the Eastern Orthodox Churches originate from 1054. Not so. This is technically not correct. Both Churches stem from Christ and His Apostles during the 1st century. In the beginning there was only one Church and that was the Christian Church. The Churches were; the Church of the West (Substantially centered in Rome) and the Church of the East centered in Constantinople. But even before we can speak of “centers”, of the entire Christian Church, the Church was united through Faith and the Ecumenical Counsels until the Great Schism of 1054. Until that time the Christian Church was fully Catholic (Catholic means Universal), which the Church was considered universal as to one teaching. Why was there a Schism? Various reasons developed between the East and Western Church. One was the use of statues used within the Western Church. The other was the use of Icons by the Eastern Church. The Schism also developed over the use of the Church of the West (Rome) adding the Filioque to the “Creed”. The Creed is and still remains within the Eastern Orthodox Church unchanged and a statement of Faith. The term Filioque meaning “and through the Son” was not used in the original Creed developed during the 1st and 2nd Ecumenical Counsels but added by the Church of the West. One my wonder why would simply changing a single short line in the Creed be so important? The answer is more important than just a few simple words. Adding the Filioque to the Creed posed a very real problem. The Filioque, and the part of the Creed where it was inserted, addresses the how the Holy Spirit proceeds from within the Triune God head of Christianity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In inserting the Filioque stating the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (and the Son) causes a major problem within the Christian Church. The issue stems from the baptism of Christ, by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit descended upon Christ, in the form of a dove, while he was being baptized in the Jordan River by John The Baptist. If the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father “and the Son”, this would mean that Christ sent the Holy Spirit unto Himself, which would negate the baptism of Christ. Additionally the first two Holy Ecumenical Councils of the ENTIRE Christian Church composed the Creed and it was agreed by the entire Christian Church, both Eastern and Western, that the Creed would not be changed under any circumstance. The Creed is a statement of Christian Faith for the Entire Christian Church.Getting back to the differentiation on page 334. Both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church have the same origins within the time line beginning with Christ and His Apostles. So I feel that the book overall may be in question, or slanted one way or the other, for the different religions that are addressed. I will attempt to update this review in the future.

I truly love this kind of book. I have the 'Philosophy' and 'Psychology' book both by the same author (DK Publishing). This book takes each major religion and really breaks it down to its essential beliefs. This book is also an easy read and almost a short story format. People who love to learn but do not have the time to read a whole book would really benefit from books like this by DK. This book in particular really answered a lot of questions I have had on other religions without being bias. It is so difficult these days to find a book on religions that is not bias and to me that's yet another reason to love DK publishing. Something else that this book covered which I really appreciated was it went into the different kinds of Christians.This book is theology so there is interpenetration and points of view which the reader must decide on. This book is a great resource to have for any questions you may have on religion. If you are looking for a book that has all of the major religions in the world with clear information that is not bias then look no further.

While the content of the book is great, the Kindle formatting is terrible.It is completely inconsistent with every other Kindle book I have purchased.Supposedly you can zoom to enlarge text and double tap to see all sidebars.None of those features work.Double tapping actually seems to randomly jump you back and forth between different sections of the book.It seems that one other book in this series has formatting problems as pointed out on the kindle order page.All of the DK Publishing books in this series need to be re-assessed as to readability.

The writers constantly refer to gods of religions other than the more modern ones as mythical. They even go so far as to refer to some religions as mythical.That to me is putting out a suggestion that their religion is the "real thing" and the others are a myth.

Mind boggling is an understatement. Page after page after page of wackos that thought God (or someone) was talking to them from the great beyond, telling them to start a new religion (or correct an existing one). All the incredible intricacies that each religion comes up with in service of their God (or gods) completely convinced that they and they alone have it right. There are a few at least, that have an inclusive view of other's beliefs, but a great number of them - not so much. My advice?...If you see humans coming your way...run!

Best book I have found about the backgrounds of literally every religion ever practiced on the face of this earth! Very interesting!

This book helped me learn about other popular religions in a way that is very easy to understand. I recommend purchasing this book if you are taking a World Religion course, or just simply would like learn about other religions. I had purchased the hardcopy of the book, so I cannot speak for how the Kindle version is.

If you were hoping that this series would have you loving Zuko's dear mother even more than you already loved her from the show, prepare to be disappointed. I'll try not to spoil it too much, (though with that said, spoiler warning anyway) but I will say that despite the fact that in the TV series she appeared to have made some kind of completely selfless sacrifice to save Zuko, that wasn't *quite* the case. In fact, in the 3-part series "The Search", Ursa is quite a cowardly, spiteful, and most of all selfish woman. Her self-centered actions resulted in her own children's suffering while she went off and lived her lifelong "dream". Many of the Fire Nation's royal family struggles were actually almost as much her fault as they were Ozai's. This is a bit of a disappointment since she was supposed to be the one member of the family who really loved young Zuko, but after reading this it seems she didn't quite care about him *that* much. (End spoiler content)The more I read about Ursa's past, the more and more I came to dislike her. I just felt like the story was trying way too hard to get the audience to feel sympathy toward her, and yet as much as I wanted to, I just couldn't.Well, I know one thing now. Zuko didn't inherit his ability to be kind even to those who would kill him from his mother. That being said, I did enjoy the story. It wasn't quite what I expected, which is a good thing.

If you don't want to read my long raving over this part, here's a quick summary. I love this book. Not only did it give me everything I wanted to see, like Ursa confronting Ozai, but it gave me things I didn't even know I wanted to see. The political situations are intense, the artwork brilliant, and every line spoken by the characters sounds like them. Even the love triangle (which I did not like) was handled well enough. It's a very satisfying conclusion on pretty much every level.Now for the lengthy part:In The Promise, we saw Avatar trying to branch out from the adventure storytelling and move into a more political setting, which sort of worked, but it kind of lost the fun adventure which made Avatar Avatar. In The Search they returned to their traditional story telling. It was an excellent story, but it didn't really evolve the world because it was so much like watching the original series.In Smoke and Shadow, they finally got it right. This series delves into the struggles of restoring the world order while also keeping the spirit of the original tale. When I finished the second book, I felt very iffy about it. I wanted to see them deal with Ursa's fear of Ozai . . . they didn't. I wanted to see the Fire Nation unraveling before Zuko's eyes . . . it sort of did. I wanted them to keep Azula out of it so that she could have an entire trilogy devoted to her . . . the didn't. So, a lot was riding on this book convincing me that everything the did or didn't do in Part 2 was a good idea.As indicated in my 5 stars, they were very successful.Azula was handled brilliantly. I dare not give away what happens with her, but by the end I was actually happy that they brought her back. Her motivations are very different than what they were before, and what they do furthers both her character and changes the nature of her relationship with Zuko, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that develops in subsequent stories. The drawing on her in particular is flawless. Every look she gives, every line she says is just so, Azula.I also like seeing the political situation escalates. It moves from mild unrest to full out riots, and the way Zuko handles the situation is very interesting. I like seeing this series challenge it's characters with real problems of being in power and trying to find the best way to solve them and struggle to do what is right. It's a great way to evolve the story from the simple adventure we saw in the TV show to young adults trying to rebuild a broken world.Ursa was also handled very well. In Part 2 she was shoved to the background and mostly a worrying mom, which I didn't like. However, the transition between her worrying about Kiyi to facing her greatest fear - Ozai - is so good that it actual makes me glad she got so little focus in Part 2. Again. this story did a great job of not giving me what I wanted, but instead showing me what I didn't realize I wanted.I do have two complaints it would be that Ursa's confrontation with Ozai feels rushed. It played out the way it should, but it was only a few panels long. I felt like that really deserved an extra page or two. Even so, it's satisfying, and the ending, which focuses on Ursa, still feels very earned.The second has to do with the love triangle. Let's just say, I pretty much hate them on principle. I actually like Kei-Lo and Mai together and think Zuko should just get over her, but they have to keep throwing this forced drama in my face. I mean, it's not terrible. I just wish they could move beyond this stupid cliche and quit trying to force us to care about characters we already care about.In spite of those two complaints, I think this is a wonderful conclusion for the story. It evolves Avatar universe, gives fantastic character development (Ukano is done very well, too), and still has a nice level of humor. If Part 2 left you on the fence, but this, because it certainly makes everything in Part 2 worthwhile.

This series ends on a real cliffhanger mystery and now I have to wait even longer for it to come out.If you like the previous series, then you will definitely like this one.All the characters are here and crazy, mad Azula adds a certain painful urgency as she tromps through the books bringing destruction to everyone she touches.Prince Zuko has been transformed by his experiences, in the anime series, it seemed that the only character who needed to grow up and change was Aang, but Zuko had his own painful growing pains and he's truly the Zuko we all came to know and admire by the end of the series.Toph wasn't in this series, which was a big letdown, she's my favorite character and I really hope the writers bring her back for the next story.

As a huge fan of this series, though admittedly not until after the series had nearly ended on TV, I want to love every bit of ancillary Avatar: The Last Airbender fiction. I got so hyped for the live action movie, and was so let down. I wanted mote Avatar, more GOOD Avatar, and eventually went searching for news from the creators of the cartoon. That's when I stumbled on the existence of the comics, and I knew I had to buy them. So I gathered up old Amazon gift cards to alleviate the strain on my wallet, and bought The Promise and the first two parts of The Search (part three was not published yet) all at once, and I am so glad that I did. The art is beautiful, and the story so immediately captures the tone and pace of the cartoon that before long it was like watching the show again, which was in turn like revisiting an old friend.This is the installment in which everything come to a head. Why is Azula playing nice with the others? Answered. Where is Zuko's mother? Answered. Is Zuko actually Ozai's son and the heir to the throne of the fire kingdom? Answered. We learn so much here which develops Zuko's character, Azula's character, the character of Zuko's mother, heck, we even get good character stuff for Aang here, as well. It is slightly unsatisfying at the end, as I really wanted to see Azula resolve some of her issues here and maybe make a move toward redemption, and I don't think that anything that happens in this comic can really be taken as that. More than anything, though, I am disappointed that it ended at all. I just want this series with these characters to continue forever!

Simply the best :)I upvoted someone's review because she said it was too complex, she couldn't understand it. Yes, I DID find that helpful, means it's what I want :) I didn't want a quick article off the net about permaculture, I wanted a university (or higher, the real world is higher than any school) level textbook. Exactly what I wanted :)

This is the "Bible" for permaculture and food forest production.However if you are just getting into or are just interested in the general concepts of permaculture, I would buy "Introduction to Permaculture" by Bill Mollison or "Gaias Garden". This will wet your beak and stay more generalized and get a understanding of what Permaculture and food forest systems can do as well as open your eyes to how our current monoculture systems are not sustainable and how much food you can actually produce on just a small acreage or even a suburban lot. The PDM is good for once you have gotten the general concepts and/or have started a PDC for certification. This holds almost all the information you need to start and build a system, answer questions. it is a great reference manual for implementing the system, but is very dry if you are looking for a introduciton/inspiration to start this on your property.

This is truly one of the best purchases I have ever made. The book can read a bit dry and can resemble stereo instructions in some places however, the vast knowledge and experience shared in this book far outweigh any kibitzing I could possibly come up with. I would recommend this book to anyone and suggest taking a permaculture class for the discussion and practical application as well.

Not much to add to this. If you're interested in Permaculture, this is the Genesis.I like to balance the principles here with some other things as well. Couple this with Holistic Management, and Keyline Design, to form the perfect Trinity.

I love this book. Clear. Informative. Not everyone is concerned about living sustainably on our planet, but if you are, the information and techniques in this book will keep you busy and feeling good about the difference you can make to your footprint on the planet, whether you have a tiny property or are responsible for many acres.

This book will transform our planet, one household at a time. Each time I read it, common sense and wisdom are presented. What is ancient becomes new again. I bought this book because our land is sinking, cracking and the few edibles planted do not do well with the city of Houston's clorinated-flouridated-and-who-knows-what-else-is-in-there water. So until we move to more land, these practices will be learned while we are urbanites. We're in the process of planning some and taking action on others first by: installing rain water collection system, planting more fruit and nut trees with herbs and flowers, installing a whole house fan, making an outdoor second bathroom off grid for our everyday use (we're always home), amending our soil by adding sand and gypsum, and this is just the beginning. What a wealth of information. I wanted to take a permaculture course, but began by ordering this book first to see if I'd like it. I love it!

I can not add much to the earlier reviews of Permaculture: A Designers' Manual by Bill Mollison, but I wanted to add another 5 star rating and a few comments.Bill Mollison is the creator of Permaculture. He walked the walk before talking the talk. Read his autobiography and you can see that his life in Tasmania, using an open mind with his experiences, gave him the experience and insight to create this system.There may have been parts of his system in other systems, but his integrated approach is workable in today's societies in many different areas from country property to a city back yard.It gives insight to weather, forests, trees, water supplies, growing zones, passive heating, and so forth. The book gives a place, a location for insights learned in other gardening and regional permaculture books.

Taking the REX course now(Regrarians Ltd) and really excited to use what I learned from this book. It is definitely a text book and something i have yet to finish but he is the founder of Permaculture and worth the purchase and the read!

I found this book truly inspiring and helpful. The idea behind CBT is that you can change your thoughts and therefore improve your reaction to emotions that you cannot change in situations, helping you with anxiety, stress, and depression to name a few. The book is, like I said before, set up for you to do entirely yourself. The author gives you the background to CBT in the beginning, showing you the idea behind it and helping you to understand the model of it, before giving you step by step how to begin your self practice with CBT, even granting a workbook in the final pages. I had heard of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy before, but I have to admit I didn't know as much as I thought. This book really informed me, some of the things I had come across felt like ah-ha moments. In short, I believe this book will help people connect with themselves on a new level just understanding that some intrusive thoughts are felt by all people and that they don't mean you are a bad person. Wonderful. One of the best books I have read this year to date, and I'm excited to keep up my own self practice of CBT because of this book. I highly recommend giving this a read.

I really enjoyed the approach this book takes. It encourages you to go through slowly, one chapter per week, doing the exercises and really thinking about how you feel and why you feel that way. The book encourages you to change aspects of your thinking and your behavior by suggesting alternative ways of being. A lot of the material proved to be an eye opener for me. It is essential that the reader takes the time to write down their thoughts as requested throughout the book. Take the time to review these notes as you progress through the book, you will learn a lot.

This is a helpful and great book that I really love to read.This book is loaded with a lot of helpful information, tips and guides that I need to know about how to retrain your brain to overcome depression and anxiety. Mark Madison is a fantastic author on this topic.I really enjoyed all the parts of the book. Very informative, detailed and well guided.Overall, it was a great and enjoyable read.

If you suffer from anxiety, depression, ocd, or a general inability to find happiness, this book will help you. It builds a foundation in modern biochemistry and cognition and relates them to all religions and ancient philosophies. I highly recommend this book to anyone who fantasizes about seeing a therapist, but doesn't have the money.

I was surprised by how thorough this book is while still staying about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The book has greatly improved. Great book. Easy to follow Effective! I found this easy to read and full of good information Guide to Retrain your Brain to Overcome Depression.
