Scotty, a nine-year-old boy, and his dog, can’t wait to run down to the beach upon arriving at their parents’ summer house on Nantucket. They are never seen again, until they mysteriously reappear 16 years later. As we learn later, Scotty was abducted by a UFO. The aliens have a noble mission to save humanity from complete destruction due to a massive cosmic calamity, and abducting human children is part of that mission.I was looking forward to a nice alien story, but I was disappointed. The aliens are called the Vallic and they are 97 percent energy. Viewed by a human they are simply faint blue outlines – of humanoid structure. I was disappointed because, like in so many science fiction books, here are aliens that are humans in costumes. Not only are they humanoid, they have males and females, and the voices of the females are softer and they have – breasts. To top it off, they speak English. McGinnis is a creative author, with great ideas. Why couldn't he have been a little more creative with the aliens? The story employs some interesting concepts, but it was just too crude and simple for me. The author is actually a pretty good story teller, he moves the plot along, but there are too many of these “oh seriously?” moments sprinkled throughout, I never got fully immersed in the story. He kept reminding me that this was not real, with unbelievable fabrications (like aliens in human form who speak English), cardboard characters, caricatures of government officials, crazy magic-like science, and flat and boring protagonists. I was never immersed in the world he created.I was going to blast the author for using the cutesy word "ginormous" a number of times. I really thought that was a made-up word. Before I complained, though, I looked it up, and sure enough, it's in the dictionary, with its synonym humongous.I stayed with it to the end, only to be disappointed that there was no resolution, no end. The book ended from one paragraph to the next, where the author tells us to wait for the next book in the series. I hate books with no ends, especially when I read one where I don't know there won't be an end because the author is planning a series all along. My bad.Sorry, I won’t be reading the next one. After reading this whole book I am just not interested enough in finding out what happens next. But I did learn that ginormous is an English word, not just slang.

Action, imagination, adventure, and wonderment all rolled into one. I don't know how Mark comes up with all his unique ideas, but I am glad he does. As with every other book that I have read by this author, I enjoyed this book greatly. I can hardly wait for book 2.In the meantime, I will start reading Ship Wrecked: Stranded on an alien world. I imagine another winner from Mark Wayne McGinnis. Mark's books have been some of the best science fiction books that I have ever read. Choose any of them and you won't be disappointed. I especially liked the Scrapyard series. Keep 'em coming Mark and I will keep reading them.

We've got a meteor (followed by a gamma ray burst) that's going to destroy the Earth. We've got these blue aliens that are composed of energy (called energics by the author) that caused this apocalyptic event and feel honor bound to save humanity at their own peril. They intend to transfer all of humanity to a planet that is absolutely hostile to human life. To do this they spend 16 years training abducted children in the fine art of rescue. In doing this, the blue people (called Vallic) do a gene splice that allows humans to become energy beings at will. This gene splice will allow humans to survive on the new world. The Vallics claim to be peaceful and gentle. To demonstrate this some of the Vallics break the necks of sniveling or disobedient children or swing them overhead so as to pull their limbs out of sockets. This is just the first book of three, and rescue plans are really not going well. I find the language stilted. There's a comma splice, some incorrect or missing articles, and a gratuitous naming of an alien metal which sounds like an athletic event for a very heavy stone. As you can see, I'm not too impressed with this presentation.

Literally stops in mid-story and tries to sell Book 2. Full of distracting usage errors that can't be mere typos. Calls Barnard's Star "Bernard's Star". The only redeeming thing is the consistent theme of open-mindedness and kindness being what's needed to save the world.

I originally thought that this would be a good book which I actually enjoyed up until the crappy CLIFFHANGER, NO END ending. That is the only reason I gave it 2 stars. As you may have guessed, I am not a fan of CLIFFHANGERS--in fact they are the most hateful pieces of writing as they are blatant money grubbing tactics which to me should be banned. End of rant. It is possible to write great series books with out resorting to books with no ending. Many authors accomplish this and to me there is no reason to continue reading a series in which none of the individual books have an ending.

This one took a while for me to warm to but by the second half it seemed to find its rhythm and the characters became a little more personable. I will be looking for the next book when it emerges and hope it has not lost its momentum from the departure point of the first.

This author really writes a good story that makes time stop and pages turn. I enjoyed every part of the book. I'm not going to tell you what the story is about because I'm not going to spoil a great time you are going to have reading it. Yes its SiFi but written in a way that keeps your interest. It doesnt get you lost in a lot of stuff that you have to figure out, it is a story I wish I had written.

Certainly very different concept of aliens and their technology. I thought the ending was abrupt, but I get the setup for book 2 to come. Only thing I didn't like was the death of children.

#165,400 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Let's face it--and Neil Thomas does--few miniature wargamers have the time and table space for the games shown in magazines and put on at conventions, and those who do don't always. Work, family and school get in the way. So what sort of games CAN we play? This is where Thomas stands almost alone. He's scaled down miniature warfare to something which can be done on a card table in an hour or two. The book consists of a short introduction, discussions (with rules) of ten wargaming periods--say three pages of description and two pages of rules each--the mandatory and disposable asides on solo and campaign gaming, the usual "where to find more information" and what really makes the book worth owning--30 scenarios playable in any period discussed, with no more than six units a side randomly selected from a list of ten. A gamer starting with nothing could buy two armies, scratch-build the terrain and be ready to go for a cash investment of under $100.The pieces of the book are free-standing, if you will. The rules could be used with different scenarios, and the scenarios do not require the rules. There are no special basing requirements either way.Limitations. Scenarios are for land warfare only. These are not skirmish scenarios, so the book's not much use for the "Western Gunfight" crowd for instance. There are no "national distinctions" and colonial warfare seems to have slipped through the cracks. The operating (unvoiced) assumptions are that "tanks is tanks"--units of the same type are equivalent--and that six units of one side are a fair match for six units of the other side. This should not keep a wargamer from using these scenarios with rules which make provision for such differences, but he'll have to keep alert to keep it a fair game. In broad terms, few of the scenarios are original, and Thomas gives credit where due. The charm of the book is "bathtubbing" a Charles S. Grant scenario intended for 12 units a side and a 5x9 table down to something requiring 12 units total and a 3x3 table.Buy the book. Don't let it keep you from buying the classic Charles S. Grant scenario books, but I think this is the one you'll more often break out on a Sunday afternoon just before your opponent shows up.

Another excellent wargaming book by Neil Thomas. The war game rules/mechanisms are extremely simple here, which owes to the fact that Neil was certainly aiming to create an ultra-fast play system by tabletop wargaming standards. I think he succeeds in developing a solid standardized, easy to learn system that works across all historical periods. Personally, for the periods that I play (medieval and fantasy), I'm not so sure I would choose to play this over DBA or Hordes of the Things, which play in a similar amount of time. Still, I truly appreciate the different ideas here and the elegance of simplicity he has achieved. My favorite part of this book is the Scenarios section in the second-half. There's a treasure trove of ideas here. The book is well worth it just for this part alone.UPDATE (7/25/2017): My admiration of this book has grown over time. No war games book can be all things to all people. So despite these rules being far from my ideal "meatier" war games system, they perfectly achieve what they set out to do: give players SIMPLE rules that play FAST and work with LIMITED SPACE on the tabletop. The research that Neil has done here is evident to me and helpful, and the scenarios are absolutely great, and easy enough to modify up to 12 units and bigger tables if you prefer. I've never seriously contemplated going outside my favored genres of fantasy, dark ages, medieval, and renaissance, as the barrier to entry was too costly and time-consuming. But this book has piqued my interest in trying smaller games in other periods such as Pike & Shot, ACW, and World War II. That speaks volumes to me. As a result, I've bumped up my rating of this to a full 5 stars.HIGHLY Recommended and should be in every wargamer's library.

A simple, concise book to get started with wargaming. The author covers several periods of history and provides simple and workable rules to simulate warfare. The book is geared to smallish games on a three foot by three foot surface. The basing of the miniatures is not important, a unit is suggested to have a frontage of 4 to 6 inches. Armies are made up of 4 to 6 units. A unit is destroyed as a combat effective by the accumulation of 15 points. These points are assessed by simple dice rolls, the score being noted until a unit's "15" is reached. Each period has its own slight variations such as ammunition supply, etc. Half the book is scenarios, laying out battles to fight. There are two short chapters on solo games and campaigns. Gamers who crave tables and long mathematical formulae will hate the simple style of these games, but they are great for a newcomer or an old hand who is looking or a simple, fast and FUN game. Worth the price.

This little book is fun for both beginners and experienced gamers alike. f you have a 10-12 year old who has just taken an interest in historical table top gaming, press this book into their hands and it is sure to open up a world of lifetime learning. I have been gaming, doing historical research and writing rules since I was that age with fascination and I still enjoy reading this book. While I have more complex rule sets I prefer to play, I find myself turning to the 30 general scenario ideas offered in the back of the book each time I want to play a game in any time period. If you are a beginner, this is an excellent place to start for simple rule sets for any time period you want to play. Each chapter offers a brief, simplified survey of what makes warfare during the time period unique. The author also explains why, for historical reasons (what a great way to learn history for kids!), he has made the rules simplifications he has, and the provides a very simple set of fast play rules. In short this is in my opinion the single best book available on miniatures gaming for everyone.

The book title should be "Organic Winegrowing Manual for California and Parts of Oregon and Washington." The book is very good and specific for California, I do not reside in California and have different problems to contend with in my region. The information on the Organic Registration and approved products is very useful. I will have to adapt most of the information to my local conditions and organisms and find local organisms that fill the same ecological niches both beneficial and harmful that are described in this book. This book does not provide pruning, trellis systems, vine density, etc information. It does not have charts on the different root stocks etc. Covers the pests and diseases of California and some of the Organic Methods to treat these pests and diseases.

Love the book, but it was supposed to be New and it came with small tears in the cover.

This manual has a lot of useful information. It speaks mostly to the CA grape grower, but the practices discussed can be adopted anywhere.

Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale, by Frederick Buechner

Amazon.com Review

A sermon arises out of silence, preacher and writer Frederick Buechner reminds us, and that silence is both an opportunity and a warning. An audience sits in the pews waiting, and each of those who sit there bring with them a long and complicated history. How will you reach them? How will you awaken them? "Tell them the truth," Buechner says in this brief and powerful book. The Gospel begins here, out of this silence: "It is life with the sound turned off so that for a moment or two you can experience it not in terms of the words you make it bearable by but for the unutterable mystery that it is." Out of this silence, he writes, the "real news comes, which is sad news before it is glad news and that is fairy tale last of all." This series of lectures explores these three ways of seeing the Gospel: first as tragedy, as honest sorrow and suffering--this must be faced before anything else becomes possible. From this comes the comedy of new life: a child born to Abraham and Sarah in old age, Lazarus raised from the dead. This is the folly of the Gospel--what Buechner will ultimately call the fairy tale. Drawing deeply from the well of The Wizard of Oz and other stories, he reminds us in this final chapter that "there is a child in all of us," a child in touch with a truth deeper than the logic of tragedy. --Doug Thorpe

This book has confirmed deep musings and convictions I've held for years, and has provided fodder for years of thought and consideration. Already it seems to have provided language for these deep and vague, but foundational convictions. The book is well written, poetic....a gem. Its main point seems to be this - that as bearers of gospel truth, our task is to tell THE TRUTH, which is never so simple or neatly bundled as we might like, but wrought with our complex and difficult and sometimes seemingly contradictory experiences....that the gospel truth is ALL of these - horrendous tragedy, absurd comedy, incredible fairy tale. READ THIS BOOK!!!!

In this book, American writer and theologian, Frederick Buechner, discusses how we can read the Gospel through new eyes. His writing is beautiful, as there is an art and poetry to how he describes the Gospel as tragedy, comedy, and fairy tale.In regards to tragedy, Buechner says that, “Before the Gospel is word, it is a silence, a kind of presenting of life itself so that we see it not for what at various times we call it – meaningless or meaningful, absurd, beautiful – but for what it truly is in all its complexity, simplicity, mystery…the preacher must somehow himself present this silence and mystery of truth by speaking what he feels, not what he ought to say, but speaking forth not only the light and the hope of it but the darkness as well, all of it, because the Gospel has to do with all of it” (page 25-26). The Gospel seems bad before it becomes good. It is “tragedy before it is comedy because it strips us bare in order ultimately to clothe us” (page 33).The tragic, Buechner writes, is the inevitable, while the comic is the unforeseeable (page 57). He goes on to say, “I suspect that Jesus spoke many of his parables as a kind of sad and holy joke and that that may be part of why he seemed reluctant to explain them because if you have to explain a joke, you might as well save your breath” (page 63). “I think that these parables can be read as jokes about God in the sense that what they are essentially about is the outlandishness of God who does impossible things with impossible people, and I believe that the comedy of them is not just a device for making the truth that they contain go down easy but that the truth that they contain can itself be thought of as comic” (page 66).When speaking of the Gospel as a fairy tale, he draws some parallels to our lives by saying, “To take the wrong turning of the path is to risk being lost in the forest forever, and an awful price has to be paid for choosing the wrong casket or the wrong door” (page 78). Furthermore fairy tales, “are tales of transformation where the ones who live happily ever after, as by no means everybody does in fairy tales, are transformed into what they have it in them at their best to be” (page 80).Near the conclusion of the book, Buechner summarizes by writing, “That is the Gospel, this meeting of darkness and light and the final victory of light. That is the fairy tale of the Gospel with, of course, the one crucial difference from all other fairy tales, which is that the claim made for it is that it is true, that it not only happened once upon a time but has kept on happening ever since and is happening still” (page 90).This book was recommended to me when I was considering pursing pastoral work as a profession. My friend told me that no other book more greatly influenced his preaching style than this book. I can see what he meant now. Buechner implores the reader to tell the truth when spreading the Gospel. In response to Amos 5:21-24, Buechner writes, “Nobody before or since has ever used words to express more powerfully than they our injustice and unrighteousness, our hardness of heart, our pride, our complacency, our hypocrisy, our idolatry, our shallowness, our faithlessness. These particular truths that the prophets speak were crucial for their own times and are crucial also for ours, and any preacher who does not speak them in his own right, naming names including his own name, any religious person who does not heave them at the injustice and unrighteousness of his own time and of himself, runs the risk of being irrelevant, sentimental, a bag of wind” (page 18).

Jesus does not answer the question "What is truth?" and neither does Buechner. His perspective on letting silence speak was excellent. Very nice how he brings in the prophets with their poetry - "It is the experience that they stun us with, speaking it out in poetry which transcends all other language in its power to the open the doors of the heart. The man of sorrows and acquiainted with grief. The one with the cauliflower ear and the split lip. By whose swollen eye and ruptured spleen we are somehow healed. Who can put a word to him and who needs to?"Chapter two presenting the gospel as tragedy Buechner addresses the Real Absence using Jesus in Gethsemane and at the cross, and also Elijah. And then this with Job: "It is out of the absence of God that God makes himself present, and it is not just the whirlwind that stands for his absence ... but God is absent also from all Job's words about God, and the words of his comforters, because they are words without knowledge that obscure the issue of God by trying to define him as present in ways and places where he is not present, to define him as moral order, as the best answer man can give to the problem of his life. God is not an answer man can give, God says. God himself does not give answers. He gives himself ..."With the gospel as comedy in chapter three he begins with Sarah having Issac in old age. He then goes into Jesus using parables as "holy jokes" that no one got, and towards the end summarizes: "God in his unending greatness and glory and man in his unending littleness, prepared for the worst but rarely for the best, prepared for the possible but rarely for the impossible. The good news breaks into a world where the news has been so bad for so long that when it is good nobody hears it much except for a few. And who are the few? ... The ones who labor and are heavy-laden like everybody else but who, unlike everybody else, know that they labor and are heavy-laden. ...They are the ones who are willing to believe in miracles because they know it will take a miracle to fill the empty place inside them where grace and peace belong with grace and peace. ... Maybe the truth of it is that it's too good not to be true."A few quotes from the final chapter with the gospel as fairy tale: "Maybe the first thing to say is that it is a world full of darkness and danger and ambiguity." Another one: "Not only does evil come disguised in the world of the fairy tale but often good does too." And then I especially like how he brings out the wonder of the gospel: "The preacher as apologist instead of fabulist tries as best he can to pare it down to a size he thinks the world will swallow."Really good stuff to chew on in this book.

I am now considering going back to school to get a Master's Degree in Nursing Informatics. I already have my BSN. I feel after reading the first few pages of this book I think I will. Thanks for the book. Great price AND in great condition.

Yes, this book was an easy read, but technology is moving at a rapid pace, and although this book was made in 2013, a lot of the information included in the text are already outdated. Some of the URL addresses included in this book also don't exist anymore. Some topics were also just passing fads, which just show how outdated this book already is. And as I do understand there are some people who don't know how to make a powerpoint or use a word-processing system, I don't see a reason for each of those topics having their own chapters. I think this book focused more on describing the current technology, rather than the impact and role it has towards nursing.

This is absolutely one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to read and my professor assigned every chapter! This is a supposedly 2013 copyright, yet some information is out of date and not useful. This book has no glossary and no clear definitions given for many, many important terms and concepts. This was a struggle to read. Virtual simulations are discussed barely and that is the new technology many emphasize in nursing education. The information on personal health records and EMRs was sketchy and confusing and not fully explained. This book is just awful and tortuous! Many concepts are confusing and poorly explained such as nursing informatics, health informatics, consumer informatics, which is a subset of which, etc. Just explain and define it without trying to confuse and trick the reader. This is a great book for a professor to concoct trick questions on tests and confusing, complicated questions which are irrelevant in the real world. I know--my professor used the standardized test bank that came with this book. Horrible!!

It's brand new, very helpful and they are in good shape just like describe in the picture. Shipment was faster than I was expecting. I ordered on Friday night and got some of my books on a SUNDAY. Are you kidding? what company deliver merchandises on a Sunday? Absolutely RECOMMANDING IT

This book informatic and Nursing was great and informative. It teaches you about modern technology and challenges the student if technology is advantages or a disadvantage to everyone involved.Your service at Amozon is Owesome . When your in school money is limited and with serivices like Amazon, this will allow me to financially afford and continue my education.Thank You Amazon and everyone that works for Amazon.God BlessTom Yoneda

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding computers in relation to nursing. I found that it explains things really well and makes the learning easier & it explains things in a way that I found very useful. This is one of those books that I will not sell back.

Needed for class

This book was a mandatory purchase for one of my college courses. It is a straightforward, to-the-point book. I have taken informatics classes in the past where the books contained pages of wordy, repetitive script. Not only that, this book is light and easy to carry. The other books were cumbersome and heavy. I recommend this book to those who want well written, straight and focused information. This book will not put you to sleep.
