From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-- A compelling account, told in easy-to-read format, of Balto, a sled dog who led his team through snow and ice over 53 miles of northern Alaska wilderness to deliver some medicine. The story is based on an actual event that occurred in 1925 during an outbreak of diptheria, when the closest medicine was 800 miles away in Anchorage. When the train bearing the important cargo became buried in the snow still 700 miles from its destination, a dog sled relay was used. Cook's softly colored illustrations are expressive and enhance the drama of the story--a proud and heroic story that young readers are sure to enjoy. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IACopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

my daughter loves the movies so I bought her the book to encourage her to read and she loves the book she has read it at least 5 times and still loves it
My 7-yr old son requested this book when he was in the hospital for two weeks recovering from meningitis. It's the story of balto, a real life rescue husky, who goes on a mission to deliver life saving medicine to a sick little girl before it was too late. He accomplished the mission. The story is just right for little kids, esp those who need a bit of encouragement. I bought my son a stuffed husky to go with it, and we bought the complete set of Balto DVDs on Amazon to take to the hospital too. My little guy has recovered well and has very fond memories of Balto, and still enjoys the book and movies.
I read this book to my six year old grandson. He loved it! He had a gazillion questions and we were able to engage in a wonderful conversation about diphtheria (!), sled dogs, Alaska, and the statue in Central Park which I've promised to take him to see. A wonderfully well told tale, with terrific illustrations. There is also a film (or two, haven't seen them). The film depicts Balto as half wolf, half dog, apparently that was a "dramatic creation".Great book!
The true story of Balto, The Greatest Dog Ever has every element needed to keep children interested and entertained. Beginning readers will find this bit of history full of adventure. In Alaska during the 1925 blizzard, sled dogs are the only mode of transportation with a remote chance of getting the vaccine for an outbreak of diphtheria from Anchorage to Nome. The details regarding the care of sled dogs will interest readers. The danger of the elements and difficulty of the trip adds suspense. The ending is satisfying as Standiford shows how Balto saved day as well as how he is remembered with a statue of him in New York's Central Park.
Bought this as part of our Alaska cruise vacation... we were going to see dog mushing so it put understanding around it for the kids prior to us going to the dog camp. It was a bit of an easy reader for my kids and their age, but I knew that prior to purchasing. I just wanted a quick book that we could read together in one sitting and then discuss. This did just that.We loved Balto.
Such a great story for all children in pre-K who are at the age to appreciate pets. I wish the story was longer as Balto's journey was a real struggle and a journey that required real stamina and courage. Perhaps this book for pre-pre K and then the movie for pre-K and K. All books on the courage and love animals demonstrate should be the books read in early childhood classes-------leaving Kermit and Big Bird for home television watching. School should be a learning experience at all times. Stories of courageous animals are the best stories for young children before the age of six Both home and school are good venues for these learning experiences.
This is a great little story - and the best part is that it's actually a true story of a very brave dog! He was the lead dog in a dog sled team in Alaska and they had to go to a town many, many, miles away to get medicine for two very sick children (back in the day) who had diphtheria and would have died without it. There was a blizzard and some of the other dogs in the team perished. I read it to my 4 year old grandson who loves animals and he loved this story.
My 8 year old son loves reading non-fiction books (moreso having them read to him) and this one was a winner for sure. He also can struggle to want to read so any book that makes him want to read is a 5 star in my book. He found it exciting and interesting and loved the storyline.
I take my Therapy Dog "Brandy" to a local elementary school for Puppy Pals. There the Kindergarten, First & Second Grade children read to our dogs one on one. Since our school was celebrating Dr. Seuss Birthday, I volunteered to read to a 2nd grade class with "Brandy" my Dog. Several years ago I read "Balto and the great Race", so this year I chose to purchase this Balto book & read it to another 2nd grade class with "Brandy" sitting at my feet. This year I took a picture of "Balto" which is in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to show the class..Once again, the little ones were enthralled with both Balto. & Alaska.
