This book claims to be for the non-technical and technical person alike, but that is not true at all. I don't know any more about satellites after reading than I did before reading it. Maybe someone with basic knowledge can find it as a good overview, and an overview, with just the facts is all it is. There is no basic science in it, there is no history like some other reviewer claimed, and what facts there are, are given with no examples and no context. Chapter 3 makes an attempt to give a helpful sentence or two about one thing or another, but there are no helpful explanations about anything. I kept reading that the military uses satellite technology for our protection, but in what manner remains a mystery until the conclusion page. The military, according to the one page of conclusions, uses satellites to track enemy bases, etc. A better writer would have included a chapter about how this is done, giving real-life, declassified examples. If you are looking for terminology, look them up on the internet. There is no reason to spend money on this book just for that reason.

As a graduate Engineer from MIT, I appreciate the effort Dr. Welti put into this book. It should help to, “stimulate a wide interest in engineering and science sorely needed to overcome our educational deficiencies and to compete in the global economy.” After reading his book, I went on Amazon and found many reviews. One that bothered me stated “Stay Away from this book” because “The author messes up the section on propulsion...The other chapters are ok...” The author commented back, “I missed the mark in trying to only use English units throughout the book in the Propellant Requirements Chapter, which caused confusion in how calculations were made. This confusion is corrected in the current revision...Original results remain the same.” He gave details in a second comment. I’m glad I ordered and received a copy of the revised version. There was no confusion. I agree with all the positive reviews, especially with “Something for everyone.” Also, this book is unique in presenting a real-life example of integrated-learning of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) that is picking up “steam” in our schools.

The author messes up the section on propulsion. He uses pounds (force) rather than slugs, pound-mass (mass) or kg. The section on the derivation of thrust is full of errors. The other chapters are ok but devoid of detailed derivations --- the equations are just given.

I've worked with satellites for most of my career but mainly as a user segment engineer. The discussions about propellent use and delta v was very illuminating.

Recommended by a friend. Down-to-earth (sorry, pun intended) easy-speak way to learn about satellites. You'll remember those words now that you understand them.

Welti has managed to address a number of function and design issues related to satellites in a manner that is easily understood by the curious layman. If I knew someone who was interested in space or satellite technology I would put this book in their hands to whet their appetite.

Elliot Willensky, who now lives in the community of Brooklyn Heights, serves as the officially appointed Borough Historian of Brooklyn and as Vice-Chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission of the City of New York. A consulting architect and exhibition designer who frequently writes and lectures on urban themes, he has taught at Brooklyn College, Cornell University, and Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture and Planning. He is a member of the board of directors of the Municipal Art Society of New York, the Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Frederick Law Olmsted Association. This is a wonderful book. The only problem with it is that it's just not long enough. WHEN BROOKLYN WAS THE WORLD 1920-1957 is a history and reminiscence of life in Brooklyn, New York, during its heyday years between the completion of the Subway line to New Lots, in 1920, and the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1957.Elliot Willensky is uniquely qualified to have written this book. As official Borough Historian and the co-author of the singular AIA GUIDE TO NEW YORK CITY (which lists and describes every architectural point of interest in the Five Boroughs) he is intimately aware of the streets of New York, but more so, as a Brooklyn boy, he also has the heartbeat of Brooklyn beating in his own chest.Brooklyn was its own city before Greater New York swallowed it whole in 1898 (by only a few hundred "yea" votes out of 70,000 cast). As a Borough, it was "big [and] klutzy," the unshaven bigger, younger blue-collar brother of chi-chi Beau Brummell Manhattan. Brooklyn's population has always exceeded that of any other Borough, and in its own way, Brooklyn has been far more diverse and interesting than even "the City".In the early twentieth century, Brooklyn grew at a fantastic rate as immigrants and the children of immigrants streamed, (as they still do), into its hundred square miles seeking relief from the overcrowding of Manhattan's Lower East Side. As Willensky says, this history of Brooklyn is divided, de facto, into three portions, before The War (1920-1941), During The War (1941-1945), and After The War (1945-1957). Each era is different. Brooklyn is different now. And yet . . .The immigrants developed their own patois that reflected a mixture of their varying accents newly-leavened with the day-to-day details of Brooklyn life. For example:"Oil" is a British lord. "Earl" is what you'd put in your car.A "stoop" is where you'd sit when you were "downstairs". "Tar Beach" up on the roof is where you'd spend your summers. "The Country" is where you'd go in the summer if you were lucky. Maybe you'd "get a bungalow" at "a bungalow colony" near Monticello or Loch Sheldrake or Ellenville in the Catskills, but if you "had money" you could always stay at The Homowack, The Tamarack, Brown's, Grossinger's or the Neville ("da Neva-lee").An egg cream was (and is) a tasty drinkable concoction containing neither eggs nor cream, but containing a species of carbonated water (which no one in their right mind ever called Club Soda) that was brought to you weekly courtesy of The Seltzer Man. The Seltzer Man "worked like a horse" hefting cases of the stuff onto his shoulder in heavy blue or green or clear siphon bottles and climbing however many flights of stairs there were in order to service his customers. And why? So his kid could go to College, maybe be a doctor or a lawyer. To make an egg cream, Seltzer was mixed with Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup and milk (with unhomogenized cream on top) from Sheffield Dairy or Borden's (Borden's was the preferred product in my house growing up, since it had a smiling Elsie the Cow on the bottle). Thus was this quintessentially Brooklyn vin ordinaire brought into existence.Pickles could be bought on the street straight out of an open pickle barrel, and nobody spit or threw their cigarette butts into these community treasures. The subway was a nickel, then it was a dime. A comfortable apartment was $60 a month. Bargains galore were available from the pushcarts on Blake Avenue.Ruby the Knish Man called his wares from a pushcart there (and everywhere else in Brooklyn, and in The Country). After I grew up and learned about cloning it solved the mystery of how Ruby managed to be in Canarsie, on Livonia Avenue, and upstate at Moonlight Cottages all at the same time.The Dodgers ("Dem Bums") wuz always in contention but never managed to get past the Yankees, except once, in 1955. Gil Hodges lived down the block. But things were changing. In '57 they were gone, courtesy of Walter (boo, hiss) O'Malley. The people from the old neighborhoods went too, to Levittown, or Bellmore, to Massapequa. We went, last of all, in 1970. "And that's how Brooklyn ended for most of us," Willensky writes sadly. "It's true," my mother nodded as I read it to her.The great New York Jewish migration from Delancey Street to Pitkin Avenue, from Pitkin Avenue to Syosset, and from Syosset to Boca Raton was paralleled by our Italian and Irish and German neighbors. And still, we all remember Brooklyn.Although I missed Wilensky's era by a scant 36 months, Brooklyn was the World to me too. As late as 1963, a horse-drawn vegetable wagon would clop down my street selling its wares. Nearby Hegeman Avenue had an unpaved lane---a dirt road---in East New York.Schaefer and Rheingold were the beers of choice, both brewed locally. Budweiser was some unheard-of crap that that guy, he never talks to nobody, bought at that place nobody shops at, y'know the one I mean, right?Wetson's was much better than McDonald's, if you could even find a McDonald's---why bother? We had Wetson's. Chicken Delight, yes. Kentucky Fried Chicken, uh, where's Kentucky, ma?Growing up, I knew there had been three baseball teams---The Yankees far away up in The Bronx, those forgotten guys from the Polo Grounds (i.e., the Giants), and The Brooklyn Bums, who were now known as the Los Angeles Traitors. For years, I thought that was the new name of the team.What I never knew was how much my family loved baseball. As an adult, I asked my Dad why he had never kept his annual promise to take me to Yankee Stadium (over time, it became the only promise he never kept to me). He looked far away and said, "After the Dodgers. After Ebbets Field. What was the point?"Gotcha.

Good quality used book. Was interested in seeing what Brooklyn was like back when I lived there but was too young to remember. Brought back memories of stories my parents told.

I got this as a present for someone who grew up in Brooklyn during the 40's/50's. They absolutely love going over all the places and things from that time, reminiscing and using the book as a tool to share stories with the younger generation. I definitely recommend this book for an accurate picture of life at this time.

Purchased as a gift for my aunt who grew up in Brooklyn during this time, as one of 12 children. She is very much looking forward to reading the book and seeing all the pictures. She was thrilled to receive it and I was very impressed with the quick delivery time.

Oh boy, what a ride. It was the cyclone at Coney Island. It was Giant Step, Giant Step. It was playing Ringo Levio at 9 pm around the corner. I have just completed my novel As Long As You Can See the Clock, You're Okay (the Williamsburgh Bank clock tower) and I can thank Elliot Willensky for bringing me "back" home. The photos are wonderful, the writing engaging.Great book.

I totally love this little series of books and Yule, the latest of the eight major pagan festivals, is no exception. Does it dig into the deep, dark, interesting past of Yule in great detail? Nope, but it wasn't meant to. It is meant to be a overview of the festival with a bit of history, lots of cool ideas to help celebrate the time of year and the festival itself. Fun recipes that can be adapted to suit the persons personal needs or at least spark some ideas. If you need a quick ritual idea, craft idea, want a logical correspondence to evoke the mood and feeling of the season, this book is for you.It isn't trying to be anything it isn't. It is a great series for an intro to the sabbats.

I'm not even 20 pages in and I already found some pretty common historical knowledge that is incorrect. The Romans didn't add January and February to the calendar, they added July and August for the emperors Julius and Agustus. Not sure how much more accuracy I'll find in this book.

This is a pretty decent overview of the Winter Solstice holiday, with an emphasis on European traditions. it tries to be culturally inclusive, and succeeds to a point. Still, it is not a bad reference for basic neo-pagan approaches and ideas.It did seem silly that the author called the word "Yule" a modern Wiccan word, when it's been used so much earlier (though without the modern Pagan meaning)- and indeed, the Scandinavian version of "Merry Christmas" is "God Jul"!I did like this volume overall, though, and have ordered the Imbolc version.

I am in love with this series! This is the 2nd book I've purchased (I bought the Samhain book in September) and can't wait to order Imbolc soon. These petite size book pack a lot of pages of usual information -- everything from traditional stories, recipes, and usage of herbs to fun and interesting tidbits. I truly enjoy reading this !

I loved this book! This was the first in the series that I had read. I loved all the history and stories, plus all of the great ideas and practices that were mentioned. Gave me a lot of great ideas for Yule that I will continue to practice each season. Great book for new witches or for those just looking for a good book to read during the holiday time.

I wish it had more decoration crafts to make listed in the book. My friend and I make a craft each year at the start of the holiday season so I'm always looking for ideas for our next project but there wasn't anything in here that caught my eye. Everything else though was very interesting and informative and this would be a good book to get if one is just entering the Craft and seeking more information about the holidays.

If you want to celebrate a secular, pagan, or make-up-your-own holiday, this book has great information and great ideas. We used it all the time over the winter holidays and will use it every year. This is a great series.

Amazing work. Having been a peacepkeer in Cyprus I felt I should read this book. A lot of people had adviced me to read it while being on the Island.The story is shocking, and it tells us about the mistake big powers committed on Cyprus. How they misled the Cypriot people, who fought for the enosis to Greece, just to receive a sham and limited "independence".The book unveils the mismanagement of the british government on Cyprus, since PM Anthony Eden's policies to encourage turkish claims just to weaken the greek stance.

I couldn't find any history of the island, so I bought this product. It is a page turner, and I believe it is the truth, in spite of the nay sayers in some of the reviews - because it makes logical sense all the way through. It is a great work and should be read by any visitor to the island

The book reveals the behind the scenes activities and points of view regarding Cyprus from the beginning of the Lyndon Johnson presidency. Moreover, it reveals the secrecy and unlawful power yielded by Henry Kissinger in the years of 1973 and 1974 regarding the division of Cyprus in 1974.Excellent book and very detailed.

This is THE ONLY translation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that you should read!This book is amazing and actually rights the translation wrongs done to Verne by early translators! In English, 20K is relegated to "Juvenile Fiction" while in France and the rest of the World, this book is still a best selling ADULT Science Fiction (or Scientific Novel as Verne called his work).This book and its annotations explain some of the subtle and genius details that Verne included but were mistranslated and misattributed as mistakes made not by the translator, but by poor Jules. For example... the Professor is said to have spent time in America's "Disagreeable Territory" which has been mis-interpreted as a vague non-specific location and evidence of Verne's supposed anti-American sentiment. However the location should have been translated as "Badlands of South Dakota", which would have reflected the Professor's (and Verne's) cutting edge knowledge of aquatic fossils. Another pathetic translation was when Ned Land is said to use a Lentil (a legume! a bean!?) to make fire! That makes no sense does it? Of course not - until the word is correctly translated as a "lens" - then it makes perfect sense that Ned Land would use a lens, to focus the sun's rays to make fire!Verne was a genius and he has suffered over 150 years of libelous misrepresentation due to lazy and criminally ignorant translation. Verne isn't the only victim to suffer - generations of English speaking Science Fiction fans and scientists have been denied access to the genius that is Verne. This translation is the first step in righting a wrong, the second step is you reading the book as it was mean to be read.Trust me, you'll thank me for the recommendation!The only thing that could make this book any better would be if the Nautilus submarine in the illustrations was the submarine designed by Harper Goff!

What a great book. Having used the 7th edition often, this was a pleasant update to the old edition with updated photos, easier navigation of pages, and overall just a fantastic resource that Im sure everyone involved with neurosurgery for years has been using. The book in my opinion just feels cleaner with a better layout and color coding scheme that helps once you have used it a few times to quickly navigate an otherwise complex load of information. Cant really speak to how great the book is as I am still new to the field, but has proven itself time and time again for me in the short time owning it to be a great companion for rounds, pimp questions, quickly refreshing prior to cases etc... In my opinion the 8th edition is worth every penny for the upgrade from the 7th, however I really wish that a PDF, eBook, or some other quick referencing computer source came with it as it would be amazing to navigate 1000+ pages using control+F (find) for one specific bit of information without having to waste time finding what I need in the index then to be referenced to a different section etc....

I'm reviewing the quality of print, not the book itself. It's absolutely terrible quality. The caption is misleading - this is a flimsy softcover book.The pictures look like they are clip art printed off of my ancient laser printer, complete with graininess, lines, and low saturation. The book is either formatted or trimmed wrong, with all of the text and pictures almost touching the top edge and a huge margin at the bottom. The cover looks like clip art that's been re-formatted. There's no publisher information, besides "Made in the USA, San Bernardino, CA / 28 November 2017" (which is the day after I ordered it, so it was obviously printed on demand.) It is the first edition and published by Prentice Hall Press, New York, NY. This book’s purpose is to help the interested readers understand the nature of order of Lepidoptera. It is a companion of readers’ field guide. “Lepidoptera” refers to “wings covered with scales”. Butterflies and moths are the only insects that wings clothed with scales. The word of “Lepidoptera” was first classified by the famous Sweden naturalist who is Linnaeus.This book tells us many information about butterfly and moth, such as their species numbers, families, morphology, biogeography, taxonomy, growth and development, reproduction, life time, behaviors, feeding, what kind of habit they need, how they communicate with each other, what predators they encounter, strategies of predator avoidance, what roles they have in the ecosystem, what problem they cause, and so on. The most reliable way to tell butterflies apart from moths is to look at their antennae. “The moths’ antennae are either hair-like, saw-toothed, or plumed; the butterflies’ antennae are smooth, with knobs at the ends”(Page 3). There are many fascinating facts in this book. The species of moths are more than butterflies. This book describes that moths have 13 families and butterflies have 8 families. It is not true that if you touch a butterfly’s wing and the “powder” rubs off that the butterfly will not be able to fly. The powder is actually tiny scales and a butterfly sheds these “scales” throughout its lifetime. Butterflies and moths are holometabolous meaning that they undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar and from chrysalis to adult. Butterflies are essentially just a very specialized group of day-flying moths, and they make up only a tiny part of the Lepidoptera.However, this book still has some imperfect parts. For example, it does not discuss their phylogeny; it shortly mentions their “biogeography”, without detailed description for locations of more species families. It also refers to “mating behaviors” and “reproduction”, without describing specific species family. Those depictions are too broad. Some of them should have diversities. To our current knowledge, we know that different species of butterflies or moths would have different mating patterns. Some female butterflies or moths would avoid sexual harassments by closing their wings. Sincerely, I appreciate that this book’s author can provide us with lots of valuable information about insect science. With the help of this book, readers would be better to research insect’s biological fields.

This book has just about everything you need as far as looking up meanings and such. My only negative comment is I wish that it came in a Hard back version although I won't take a star off because I know it's not amazons fault it's not printed in hard back. With the overall size and I mean this book is giant! It would be a lot easier to lug around and use if a hard back version could be printed. It came well packaged although I believe amazon should wrap it in plastic wrap to protect the edges and incase the box would have gotten wet so for that I deducted one star.

I love this book. I am currently a first year in vet school and it has been a life saver to keep on my desk when I am reading through my notes and come across a word I have not seen. The book includes a list of muscles, actions, innervation, arteries, etc., which is extremely helpful for anatomy classes. A must have for any vet, pre-vet student. You basically learn a whole new language in your classes and this helps to understand it.

Very useful, and I'm glad I purchased this. Some medical websites do not have the correct terms I need for veterinary technician classes. My only grievance is that on some pages, the terms (in blue) are almost double printed (like they have a shadow). Terms are still legible so it's more of a bookworms grievance.

It's alot to take in at once. So, I made a planner in order to finish this book and Wow love everything about it. Its a must to have for your self and a quick reference for your knowledge.*pretty heavy to carry around but a great book overall*

Pretty much exactly what I expected and needed. Great for vet tech school to look up those things that your other books do not explain well, or as a quick reference. It's really easy to look up words and terms with the way it is organized. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because my copy arrived with the front cover bent, which I'm kind of mad about because I paid upwards of $50 for it new from Amazon. I also wish it was a hard cover book rather than paperback - would make more sense with the amount of pages (and the bent cover wouldn't have happened.)

Came in good condition! Book haves vocabulary words in navy blue font color and haves colored real life pictures and cartoons.

I purchased the Kindle version. The search function looks for every instance of the word, not the instance with the definition. When I finally find the definition it makes little sense and I end up using Google instead. I wish I hadn't wasted my money!

I use this book to hold down my bookshelf most of the time, but I do occasionally pull it out when I'm not doing homework/research near my electronic devices. (GASP!) For its size, I wish sometimes that it was a hardback cover instead a paperback. If I didn't already have a physical copy, I would've just bought the Kindle version and saved some space.

Don't get me wrong--Gaskell's novel is magnificent--a 5+++++. Where Dickens's portrait of England's early manufacturers and nascent factory system in Hard Times is caricature, Gaskell's is nuanced and complex. I wish this novel were better known and appreciated. My low rating is for the Penguin Classics edition, with introduction and notes by one Patricia Ingham, who is identified as a Fellow in English at St. Anne's College, Oxford. Since I was re-reading the novel, I disregarded the spoiler warning and read the introduction first. Apart from a few useful facts--e.g., that Gaskell originally intended to call her novel Margaret Hale after the protagonist but changed the title before publication in Dickens's Household Words, the introduction is mostly prefab class-and-gender analysis delivered in imprecise and inelegant jargon: "[Margaret] problematizes both the contemporary major discourses that justify [the workers'] emiseration: paternalism and 'the struggle for existence.' " The notes, by the way, which are not preceded by a spoiler warning, are full of spoilers; within the first couple of pages, at least two major plot developments are revealed. The notes are also full of Ms. Ingham's superfluous and condescending explanations of the significance of events and textual features (quotations, allusions, etc.) as if the benighted reader needs her guidance at every step. Finally, this edition is poorly produced: tiny font, poor contrast between page and type, and an inside margin so skimpy that it is difficult to read the full line without breaking the binding. What's happening at Penguin? at Oxford?

The title refers to the north and south counties of England, the north industrial, the south rural. Young woman from south is forced to move with her family to a northern industrial town where she butts heads with a mill owner. Themes include workers' rights; the tragic conditions of the poor and oppressed (most of whom are very honorable people); rampant disease (affecting all classes); unrequited love; familial devotion; spiritual faith; the price of success. Hard to put down. Well developed characters in a character-driven story. Thoughtful, sometimes disturbing, and often romantic. Historical setting: early 1800's.

I have watched the series often because it is one of my favorites. As happens often the book is so much richer and sweeter, although I still consider the TV series one of my favorites. An excellent read that takes you into the center of another world, at another time!

This is a great read, and if you're familiar with or enjoy Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you will find similar plots, themes, and personalities. Gaskell's work is different in its own way to Austen's despite the similarities, and it raises important discussions on the image of Northern and Southern England, class, economics, and health that are fun to explore if you're a scholar. Many people coin this as the "darker" Pride and Prejudice, and in some ways it is. I mean, compared to Austen's own words that her work is sparkly, it's definitely different and some people are very concrete and stark on their opinions. Both are enjoyable and both are great to have on your shelf and both are important for their influence and study in Gregorian and Victorian England.

Written in the 1850s, North and South tells the story of Miss Margaret Hale, a young lady from southern, agrarian England and Mr. Thornton, a self-made, wealthy industrialist from northern England. Each is opposite to the other in all things so they begin their acquaintance at a disadvantage and continue being at odds throughout the whole course of the book. Miss Hale is proud, but likes helping her fellow man, because of her religion and because of her integrity. Mr. Thornton is proud of his accomplishments, but treats his workers with disdain. Each comes to understand and appreciate the other's viewpoint and grow as people.The only thing I didn't care for in the book is the continuous diatribe about religion, which especially Margaret was always advocating. I had to compare it to Jane Austen's novels; although both authors had similar backgrounds from families with plenty of ministers, fathers, husbands, and brothers, being such, Austen's characters, while devout, don't talk about it incessantly.

Loved the story. It ended more abruptly than I prefer, but it was a very satisfying ending nonetheless.This version is a bit flimsy, but the editor’s notes are very, very helpful. However, they sometimes contain spoilers. If you’ve never read/watched the story, be cautious about the editor’s notes.Also, unless you speak French, be prepared to Google something every couple chapters.

While I fully enjoy the actual novel North and South, this particular reproduction is not at all what I expected. It is titled and advertised that it is a hardcover version of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. It is NOT. The first few pages reference the constitutions of the free masons, then there are about 100+ blank pages, then pages 151-154 of the ending of North and South. Ridiculous - this should not be advertised as the North and South novel. There is a disclaimer page that "as a reproduction of a historical artifact, this work may contain missing or blurred pages, etc." but nowhere did it say that this didn't really have the novel at all. I feel this is mis-representation for something that costs over $20.

I've always loved the romantic classics by Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, but North and South captures my heart in a different way. I love the descriptions rife with metaphors and similes. I love the characterization so clear and poetic, and how the characters stay so true to themselves. How the plot moves through the phases of longing, sadness, and despair and the tolls it takes on each character. I come back to this book over and over like an old friend

I think my favorite of the speeches was The Cataclysm of Damocles which was delivered in 1986 but could have been delivered today and been as necessary.This is a book I will cherish and I couldn't recommend it more. this is great fold out laminated bird watching guide we are feeding the wild birds bird seed bells and peanut butter suit blocks its fun to finally know the names of the birds that drop down in our yard to get something to eat or drink plus the wild hawks and hummingbirds too..easy to read nice big pictures of each bird laminated organized into water birds, perch birds, hummies,,ect ect great for a beginner or slap your forehead oh i didnt know the name of that wild woodpecker ...great for all ages ...simple pleasures of feeding the birds on a day they are freezing their tuches off

I purchased the folding South Carolina bird pocket guide for a present and the recipient was thrilled with it, being able to use it easily while kayaking and birding. The plastic coating protects it near the water, and the thin size makes it easy to put into their pocket while birding. It was a great,practical gift!

I stuck this guide - which folds like an travel map - in my field bag and went bird watching this afternoon. I used it to identify what looked like a female red tail hunting, later a swainson's hawk and then in the evening male and female kestrels. While definitive identification is still a crap shoot for me, the information in this guide was very helpful - it put me in the ballpark. Handy, laminated, minimal but to the point detail and a great field resource for $6.00 or less. I would have liked more detail...but here is where the larger field guides come in to supplement your observations. This guide gives you an idea and then sets the foundation for further review at home. Recommended.

Small little pocket guide, with great photos. Good to bring with in your car or for your little nature walk to explore and be able to see and name the birds. Great pocket guide for bird lovers!

I recently moved to SC and have a pond behind the house which attracts many birds. I keep the guide outside so it is readily available when I see birds I do not recognize and it is quite helpful.
