I was a bit leery about reading this one after reading a few other similar books, but I’m glad I did. Wow! You won’t believe the depth of information in this book. Best of all, the entire book is written in layman’s terms so that anyone can read it. You don’t need a medical background to comprehend this one, but can follow it without any problems. Simple diagrams and photos are spread throughout. Overall, I enjoyed it. It is quite thorough in everything.

This is the third edition and I have bought every edition. They are always adding to the amount of knowledge and useable information. I am a former paramedic and I can say this is a great textbook for disaster medicine. It is easy to understand and easy to use a reference. This would be a huge asset to anyone's library!

VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND THOROUGH.I don't have their previous editions, but from what I can gather, the authors have significantly expanded their scope in this 3rd edition. It won't make you a doctor, but it will equip you with the vital medical skills needed when there is little or no chance of finding a doctor. The book is written by a medical doctor and an advanced nurse practitioner. It is in layman's terms; all skills and procedures are explained in a simple, straightforward way. Topics include Preparedness; Cleanliness; Triage; Assessment; all manner of Infections; Natural Disasters; Maritime Survival; Biological Warfare & Radiation Sickness; Injuries; Bites; Chronic Medical Conditions such as management of Diabetes, Epilepsy, Heart Disease; CPR; Pregnancy; Anxiety & Depression; Dental Issues; Medication. The only downside I can find is the size and weight of the book (H229mm × W153mm × 39mm spine, mass = 1040g). (Approximately H 9" × W 6" × 1.5" spine, mass = 2.29lb). It's not the kind of weight you would like in your bug-out-bag, but all things considered, I would be comforted to know I had this resource close at hand. Maybe the publishers can use finer paper next time? At 671 pages (including photos and diagrams), this is a valuable, yet weighty reference book. Keep one on your bookshelf!!

So glad I found this book. I’ve looked at a number of books in this category and was disappointed by one I got recently that was written by a “survival” doctor. It directed me to go to the hospital just about every chapter. The Altons, however, are the real deal, and write as if some major event had completely eliminated all modern medical care. The book is easy to understand, and covers so many topics that it’s hard to imagine what they could have missed. I also like that they also include natural remedies throughout the book along with regular medical stuff. If you’re in the market for a real survival medicine book, this is the Gold Standard, as far as I’m concerned.

I would like to think that after reading this book I'm definitely more prepared than I was a month ago. I have a neighbor who is an ex-military medic. He says if a SHTF scenario ever took place there will be too type of individuals that will be vital for survival. Medics and ham operators. The doctor and his wife did a great job, the book is very straightforward and simplistic to decipher. This should be a book that every concerned well prepared individuals home.

Having been and EMT and Wilderness EMT for years, I didn't expect this book to provide me much, man was I wrong. This is THE BEST survival /prepper / homestead medical book hands down. You will not be disappointed. Get yours today!

I trained medics in the Army, so I may have a broader base than most. Yet, this will not only provide you with a great list of items to have on hand should SHTF, but also give you instruction for treating most of the injuries and illnesses you may encounter.

This is one of the most useful books in my studies, if not THE most useful. It was much thicker than I originally thought it would be. It covers everything from dehydration, low blood sugar and heat exhaustion to volcanos, amputations and active shooters. I highly recommend this for anyone preparing to go out in the wilderness far from civilization (for camping or whatever), to dangerous locations (like active volcanos), or anyone, like me, who plans on working in state parks or becoming a forest ranger. It's certainly very thorough and extensive.

This book is a good addition to a family medical library. It's based upon the assumption that certain catastrophes (e.g. natural disasters, nuclear war) may leave you and your family isolated from the medical community for a long time. Hence, the book is packed with medical information needed to treat others in an environment where pharmacies are unavailable and trained medical personnel are otherwise occupied or dead. One thing this book isn't: a guide to amateur surgery. There are some things that cannot be done without years of specialized medical training, no matter how desperate the circumstances. Another thing this book isn't: A stand alone compendium of medical knowledge. If your intent is to build a good prepper's medical library, you'll want to supplement it with a Merck Manual (there's one written in plain English), as well as texts dealing specifically with anatomy, drugs (prescription and OTC), and a text geared to symptom identification. Please be advised this book will be of comparatively little value if you don't read it and follow its stockpiling recommendations for supplies, equipment, and medications.

The Gift of Peace: Personal Reflections

From Library Journal

The well-loved cardinal of Chicago completed this book during the last few months of his life. In it he records the personal struggle of his final three years, during which he faced charges of sexual misconduct, later dropped as admittedly false. Eventually, Bernardin made peace with his accuser, helping the younger man reconcile with his Catholic faith before he died of AIDS. Bernardin also accepted his own imminent death from pancreatic cancer as a true lesson of the cross, writing here about his mixed sense of abandonment and hope with a profound awareness of the meaning of shared suffering and Christian love. A very moving last testament, written with simplicity and deep wisdom.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

The Gift Of Peace is the final legacy left to us by one of America's most beloved and respected clerics. Preparing The Gift Of Peace was an extraordinary effort which consumed Joseph Cardinal Bernardin's final days, and offers deeply personal reflections about his last three headline-filled years. The Gift Of Peace also reveals the Cardinal's spiritual growth amidst a string of traumatic events: false accusations of sexual abuse; reconciliation a year later with his accuser (who had earlier recanted the charges); a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and surgery; the return of cancer (in his liver); his decision to discontinue chemotherapy and live his remaining days as fully as possible. Even after Cardinal Bernardin relinquished the day-to-day operation of the Archdiocese in his final weeks, he continued to work on The Gift Of Peace. Cardinal Bernardin was known for his gift of reconciliation, and for a "consistent ethic of life" that urged a reverence for life from conception to natural death. In his final years he made a trip to Israel with Jewish leaders; launched the Catholic Common Ground Initiative to heal rifts among America's Catholics; and sent a letter to the Supreme Court urging them not to approve "physician-assisted" suicide. The Gift Of Peace is a worthy testament to the memory of a Christian life amidst contemporary issues and modern day challenges of life in the last years of the 20th century. -- Midwest Book ReviewThis touching and insightful little book serves as a poignant reminder to all of us that people of faith do have an extraordinary resource which can allow them to face life's most difficult moments, life's worst surprises, life's most bitter defeats with equanimity and peace and sometimes even an undercurrent of seemingly unshakable joy. Cardinal Bernadin wrote this book in the final two months of his life. In it he reflects on the three years previous in which he was falsely accused of sexual misconduct, and in which he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which, after a brief remission, reappeared with a vengeance. Through all of this, he maintained his faith and his gentle and loving perspective on life. He admits that his spiritual journey has always been a struggle to become closer to God and that the trials of the false accusation and his illness taught him how to release his pain, his anger, and himself into God's hands. This is a book that should be of interest to all people of faith and, in particular, to anyone who struggles with serious illness or the issue of forgiveness. Joseph Cardinal Bernadin's legacy is not only his life's work but his ability to forgive fully and to die well. -- From Independent Publisher

I didn't really know what to expect when I picked up this book years ago for the first time. I was someone who was interested in Catholicism and had attended mass a few times, however I was not Catholic. When I read the book I realized this was not a book about being Catholic, it was just a book about a man with extraordinary compassion. I remember reading and thinking, how can this man be so forgiving, compassionate, and strong. Did it have to do with Catholicism ? I don't think so. It was a man with true faith and who believed in really living his faith. If there was ever a handbook and a first-hand account on how we should live and treat others, this is it.

This book is written in a very simple manner, yet discloses very personal feelings of Cardinal Bernardin. His struggles with the humiliation of being accused of child abuse and then his struggle with the knowledge of his terminal cancer was truly heart rending. One of the things that tickled me was that he honestly admits that during his daily prayers his mind would wander to tasks he had before him for the day - a problem I have myself! His thoughts on cancer and dying were very helpful to me as I have lost family members to this terrible disease. I would recommend this book not only to people that are dealing with cancer, but to family members as well.

A remarkable personal memoir of a remarkable man written within weeks of his death. Bernardin's views on his cancer, treatment, and oncoming death are seen through the lens of a very active life - one which did not look forward to stopping this way. Bernardin did a lot in his life, so there will be some who did not like him - this is the curse of a life of achievement. He also did a lot of good, and his ability to make a good end at peace with all is inspiring.

Gods gift of peace is available for the asking. One mans journey from success to disaster and back transcends death. This book is armor for anything life can throw at you.

This book should be on every Catholic's reading list. It is a beautiful story that is beautifully told.

I needed this book at this time ! ! !

A must read for everyone. He was an exemplary human being, priest and a man of Faith. A gift to the world.

Seems overpriced since it is not really a full-sized book. But it was lovely to read.

Love this book

The book itself is well written and easy to navigate, packed with lots of helpful info on astrology. I bought it to study up on astrology basics so I can understand more about the subject, so I was challenging myself to read a section a night. Unfortunately for me, I got one of the copies that has the pages all out of order and is missing an entire chunk of pages, which was just replaced by a second printing of the first chunk. Really disappointing. And on top of that, I didn't get around to reading it until right after the return window was closed, so now I'm stuck with an incomplete book. So just be advised, check your page numbers as soon as you receive your copy. Some others and myself have been receiving botched books.

Excellent book. I feel very comfortable with how much I learned. Astrology finally makes sense. I am no longer intimidated by aspects or houses. My book did not come with any software or even website reference. I really wish there were some exercises after all that I have learned. I feel I need to now apply all that I have learned and start practicing. But how do I know I am interpreting it correctly? That's why I feel i need some kind of a quiz to test my planets, houses, and aspects. I can look at my chart and come up with a lot of ideas but are they correct? I do not know. This is not the only book you will ever need. You will need to keep studying and practicing.

Way too basic to be "The only Astrology Book" you'll ever need. I have several other books that offer much more information and are still an easy read for a novice. Just disappointed there was so much bad generalizing, way to much importance on Sun sign, and breezed over pretty important stuff, if it mentions it at all. That said, if you're only interested in basics and are new, this book may be for you.

Updated post: i was able to get in contact with the seller and i received a new book without any imperfections very quickly! Love this book and all my friends want to read it! Would recommend!I was so excited about this book, but when I got it I noticed that the book I recieved was misprinted. My book goes from page 82 to page 51. I will update if I notice another mistake.

One of the best astrology books I have ever read. It makes it easy to understand and read everything. And it explains how to do the numerology so you can do it and understand it. Great for a beginner or anyone that's already experienced in numerology and astrology.

This has been one of the most useful books I have ever purchased. I've returned to it time and time again for more clarification and understanding. The insight I have gained from this amazing book as made me kinder and more accepting of myself and others. It has helped me immensely along my journey. I've purchased a few copies over the years to give to friends, and their response has been very positive as well. If you are into astrology and want to learn more about the deeper levels and intricacies of astrology, thus is the perfect place to start!

The best book to study and read up on Astrology no matter how many times I read threw I always learn something else I didn't catch before

I am giving this two stars because the book was advertised as having a link for which you can access in order to do charts. I feel really foolish right now and irritated because I bought the other version of this book first, thinking it had a disk included to do charting and it turns out that it no longer does. I returned that one and order this one for my granddaughters birthday thinking it had the link to the website for the same purpose. Only to find out that the link is no longer active and now I have to come up with an alternative charting software, since I have a very disappointed teenager. When I went back to look at the reviews again that's when I noticed several reviews down that this is a problem with this book. Do not purchase this book if that's what you're expecting it to have a link for charting included. I will be contacting the publisher next with my feedback about this issue. They know better! Very irritated. :-(

Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U. S. Navy, by Ian W. Toll

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Toll, a former financial analyst and political speechwriter, makes an auspicious debut with this rousing, exhaustively researched history of the founding of the U.S. Navy. The author chronicles the late 18th- and early 19th-century process of building a fleet that could project American power beyond her shores. The ragtag Continental Navy created during the Revolution was promptly dismantled after the war, and it wasn't until 1794—in the face of threats to U.S. shipping from England, France and the Barbary states of North Africa—that Congress authorized the construction of six frigates and laid the foundation for a permanent navy. A cabinet-level Department of the Navy followed in 1798. The fledgling navy quickly proved its worth in the Quasi War against France in the Caribbean, the Tripolitan War with Tripoli and the War of 1812 against the English. In holding its own against the British, the U.S. fleet broke the British navy's "sacred spell of invincibility," sparked a "new enthusiasm for naval power" in the U.S. and marked the maturation of the American navy. Toll provides perspective by seamlessly incorporating the era's political and diplomatic history into his superlative single-volume narrative—a must-read for fans of naval history and the early American Republic. From Booklist

Not confined to sea battles, Toll's history of the U.S. Navy's formative decades, from the mid-1790s to the War of 1812, rounds out affairs by anchoring the nascent navy to its financial supports. Navies are not inexpensive, and the costs of building and maintaining ships appear lightly but persistently in Toll's narrative. It centers on the first vessels purpose-built for the navy, the half-dozen frigates of which the USSConstitution moored in Boston today is the last survivor. Besides money, their construction involved politics; the Federalists favored the naval program (creating the Department of the Navy in 1798), while Jefferson's parsimonious Republicans were more diffident. Toll is as insightful about the essential domestic and diplomatic background as he is with his dramatizations of the naval engagements of the new navy, which produced a crop of national heroes such as Stephen Decatur. The maritime strategy and the highly developed sense of officers' honor, which influenced where particular battles occurred, emerge clearly in this fluent account. Vibrant and comprehensive, Toll makes an impressive debut. Gilbert TaylorCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Why did I read this book? I'm in this mood where I'm not interested in fiction. I hadn't been able to finish any of the fiction books I was reading, so I started reading a history book called The Fourth Part of the World. A fascinating read on what could have been a very dry subject, a map. I blew threw it in a few days and wanted more. Next I read 1776. A very well known book, deservedly so. I was impressed. But I was done, and was hungry for more, particularly from that time period. I stumbled upon Six Frigates and started in.I couldn't put it down. Not only is the book captivating and intense, it is sincere in it's historical accuracy (unlike other history books I've read that try to make the work into a Hollywood thriller). While reading, you get the sense that this was extremely well researched. At the same time, the descriptions make you feel like you're living the moment. And the insights into our founding fathers are so well illustrated that you come away feeling as if you know the people, or better yet, as if Ian Toll knew them and is tell us about people with which he is well acquainted. Why is the book important? In Ian's own words, he "set out to write a book about the founding of the U.S. Navy, yet ended up writing a book about the founding of our country".The book is about how a government decides when to use force overseas, defend its rights against the world superpower, and enter the world stage. THis is an underdog story, sure. And a rousing adventure. But it also sheds light on how 13 colonies became one nation.

Today, we take the U.S. Navy and our dominance over the world’s oceans for granted. But as Ian Toll’s Six Frigates explains, this result was not predestined, resulting from a number of decisions make at land and sea. Toll not only puts on board the six sailing ships for which the book is named, but in the Halls of Congress, the Executive Mansion (as it was known before being named “The White House”), on wharves and in the offices of nautical architects. By combining politics, economics, architecture and many other facets with his tales of sailing and naval combat Toll, provides his readers with a full appreciation for the complicated story of how the U.S. emerged from an foundling nation with no navy to the beginning of the realization that it was only a matter of time before it would surpass England’s mastery of the seas.Toll assumes no knowledge of nautical affairs, explaining the difference between a frigate and other naval vessels (although he can get somewhat technical in the battle scenes), and takes particular joy in recounting the initial controversy over their design. In so doing he introduces us to a little known but fascinating figure in early American history, Joshua Humphreys, who conceived their controversial design and touched off a firestorm with jealous rivals. That Humphreys prevailed in his battles with his critics would play a crucial role in the frigates’ success, and Toll does not slight it.The fight with the Barbary pirated during the Jefferson administration was the Navy’s first test, and Toll spends a good deal of time recounting it. The naval aspects of the War of 1812 also comes in for comprehensive coverage. Unfortunately, the tale mostly ends there without covering the post war return to Africa that put the Barbary Pirates out of business once and for all from the US perspective. By the end of the story, the US navy is well established, it’s leading officers the chief heroes of the young Republic rivalled only by Andrew Jackson for his victory over the British at New Orleans. As the book closes we see James Madison, who fought the navy’s creation with Thomas Jefferson during the Washington and Adams administration, overseeing the second great wave of ship building featuring vessels that will dwarf the original six.Toll makes only a single mistake I detected. In his epilogue of post 1815 naval history highlights he attributes the America’s entry in World War One to the sinking of the Lusitania. Although that disaster played an important part in a longer process, it was not the proximate cause that Toll presents it to be. But that it very tangential to what is a fascinating story wonderfully told.

This is the fascinating story of how our American Navy was born during the fragile years of our country's origin. In 1794, President Washington signed legislation authorizing the construction of 6 heavy frigates. These ships were to help protect American shipping interests and to counter the British practice of forcing American sailors to serve on British ships. The wood for each frigate would require several hundred live oak trees. The frame pieces could only be cut from the largest and oldest trees, about one in fifty. Live oak was sought for its extraordinary strength and resistance to both salt air and rot. It had a lifespan 5 times that of white oak. But shipyard workers dreaded the extra work it took to cut and shape it. A nail driven into it was nearly impossible to extract. Axes bounced off it and saws moved back and forth across it again and again, barely making progress.Live oak trees were difficult to obtain. They grew in the uninhabited coastal islands of Georgia. The first ninety axe-men and ship-carpenters arrived from Connecticut on St. Simon Island, Georgia. They immediately contracted malaria. All but three returned home. From the design of the ships and their complex construction, to battling the Barbary pirates of Tripoli off North Africa, to the legislative debates on their high cost to our fledgling economy, to the hair-raising sea battles against the mightiest navy that ever existed (the British), this story is engaging from start to finish.
