I share author Eberstadt's point of view, that entitlements are a time bomb that will need to be drastically modified else they'll blow up the nation's future (i.e. make later generations live lives of privation compared to ours -- and curse us for it [I'm 66]).And the book is a fairly good review of the subject, mostly at the top level of overall budgets for entitlements in comparison to GDP (and their changes over the last five decades). There's one exception: The explosion in the use of Social Security's disability Insurance [DI] program is discussed in more detail and, naturally enough, follows immediately upon a section titled "The Male Flight from Work in the Entitlement Society." One point, in particular, sticks in my mind: "[T]he proclivity to rely upon government disability payments today is at least as much a 'white thing' as a tendency for any other American group." This conclusion (pp. 53 -55) is based upon the demography of regions that have high DI use compared to ones that don't.Eberstadt works at the American Enterprise Institute, and his views are consistent with that. The book also contains few-page-response sections from William Galston and Yuval Levin. Galston is at the Brookings Institution, and he politely disagrees with Eberstadt's theme that the huge surge in use of entitlements directly reflects a degradation in the civic character of American society. I come down on Eberstadt's side, but Galston's demurral is definitely worth considering. (Levin's remarks, largely in accord with Eberstadt's viewpoint, are tantalizingly interesting but too terse for me to fully understand what he's saying.)I don't think this product is worth five stars, because I think it needed further polishing. There are quite a few typos, and many of the charts (graphs) are indifferently labeled, so it can be a chore to figure out just what they're telling us.Why not four stars then? Because the paperback is a highly-reader-unfriendly package for this chart-laden material. The book is five inches by seven inches, so it's understandable that each chart takes up a whole page. But this means that one usually has to flip back and forth several pages to see the chart and read the corresponding discussion -- highly distracting and inconvenient! So somebody made a bad choice in going for this layout, but they may have done it to disguise the fact that this "book" is really more of a middling-length essay -- in a larger format, it would be obviously "skinny," and perhaps $8.45 would seem a bit much for what you get.

No matter how you name them, there are two major groups in America today. They are those that work, pay their taxes and try to help others and those that do not work, do not pay taxes and are the victims to be taken care of by the other group. One of Eberstadt's major points is that this cannot continue endlessly, especially if the percentage of people in the first group continues to increase, while the providers continue to shrink in numbers. There is no free lunch - the price will have to be paid.

Really thorough (if not terrifying) financial and statistical account of the US entitlement system (primarily health care, retirement, and disability programs). It's a fairly balanced politically bipartisan critique of what the US government is doing. The authors's biggest attack is on the present generation of entitlement recipients ("takers") who are financing their largesse by borrowing huge amounts of money via Federal government deficit spending and thereby forcing the next (and even future unborn) generations to pay for it. The author points out that these entitlement programs are the result of both Republican and Democratic political actions. There are also three chapters at the end with critiques or at least somewhat different viewpoints of the author's assessments.

The author seems to come in with a strong agenda to prove that the "entitlements" they discuss are destroying the nation but fails to recognize the burden of stagnant wages, increasing costs of housing, education, healthcare, etc. The "takers" that I feel should have been mentioned are the wealthy who avoid taxes, companies who underpay workers, and those bypassing regulation at to all of us. I disagree with the author and feel that they used a very narrow point of view.To be honest, I thought the "takers" would be defined in a completely different way and I wouldn't have purchased the book if I looked further into it.

A little "heady", a book for a college or graduate level class but a great read. Eberstadt makes a great case against the modern welfare system & the need to make changes. He identifies general & specific changes he feels would make the system work better for the recipients & those who are taxed to pay for the system.

The best part of this book is Part II Dissenting Points of View where two authors offer a different perspective and Eberstadt tries to counter in the Epilogue. There are many charts and a handful are interesting and relevant to the subject. Reference (in the Acknowledgment) to the American Enterprise Institute explains the author's position and overall tone. Luckily, Part II brings a little more thoughtful and credible balance to the subject matter covered in this book.

When I grew up in the 1960s times were really difficult for our family, My father was un-educated and a ex-sharecropper. Butone thing he always told me was that he would never take welfare no matter how hard times were. Today, Americans have noproblem accepting welfare even if they are healthy and able body men and women.

It needed the rebuttals at the end to keep it in perspective.

#16,655 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I’ll be honest: when I read the initial reviews for this cookbook after waiting months for its release I became nervous having pre-ordered. For some reason, my cookbook didn’t show up on Oct 9th so I was reading reviews in the meantime.I don’t understand the negative reviews. One in particular castigating the author for high calorie submissions when I only saw one matching that description in the Slow-Cooker section (Loaded Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potatoes 806 calories for one loaded boat). The rest of the recipes are below 500 calories.I enjoy the organizational format and the abundance of professional photos of most of the meals. You can get a good idea if the recipe is for you by photos alone and this has been well done just like her previous two cookbooks. She also has a “Skinny Scoop” commentary on the bottom of the page that offers information you may not have known related to the recipe or references how to use the recipe in tandem with another one of the recipes in the book.As always I appreciated the time taken to list a recipes nutritional information since I calorie count making it much easier for me in that effort.I’ve included photos of what I have made so far having only had this book for a few days and a photo of the so-called calorie offending one so many reviewers are criticizing as a departure from her previous publications. As you can see, it looks absolutely scrumptious and may just be one they use on a cheat day or simply adjust their daily meal plan to fit it in because it looks worth a try.First photo: Turkey Kielbasa and Cabbage (209 calories)Second photo: Turkey Cheeseburger Soup (254 calories)Third photo: Loaded Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potatoes (809 calories)Fourth photo: Organizational formatFifth photo: Wild Salmon with Avocado-Basil Salad (349 calories)Sixth photo: Navy Bean, Bacon, and Spinach Soup (for IP at 207 calories a serving)If you loved her other cookbooks and blog, this one does not disappoint despite what others have said. Some of the criticism of this publication is grossly exaggerated and for what reason I can only speculate.

1. STOP COMPLAINING THAT SHE IS NOT INCLUDING THE WEIGHT WATCHERS POINTS! Weight Watchers OWNS the point system and Gina will NEVER publish the WW points for her recipes, nor will any other author be able to. EVER. She states this very clearly on her blog and in the cookbooks, but apparently people would rather complain than read & comprehend.2. She gives complete nutritional information for every single recipe and she has made the recipes far healthier than they normally are! Stop complaining!3. Her recipes are not specifically made for diabetics or those with sodium restrictions. I have no clue why people expect a cookbook to meet their exact dietary restrictions and then complain when it does not - this book is not stated to fulfill either restriction.I was VERY impressed with this book, especially in comparison to the 2nd, which I did NOT care for at all (most recipes were from her blog, with little or no changes. 4-5 pages were dedicated to toast and taco toppings each. Waste of time & space.) The food photography is well done and therefore makes the book a pleasure to look through. I think it is far better organized than her 1st two books were and the index is MUCH easier to navigate this time! The variety of recipes is much larger than in the 1st two books and while there are some blog favorites included, most are new recipes. I can honestly say there are a lot of recipes in this book that I plan on cooking that I would never have tried normally, as I consider myself a poor cook! She makes them look that good and the recipes that easy to prepare! For those without an IP or airfryer, yes she provides alternate stovetop/oven cooking methods.I personally think this is the best of the 3 books, in terms of organization, appeal & variety. Far superior to the 2nd cookbook for sure!

I made the quickest Gnocchi Bolognese from page 147 and as always it was so delicious, even though I used almond milk, skipped the ricotta and used trader joe's cauliflower gnocchi! ( I am Lactose intolerant ) I can already see this gorgeous cookbook being my most used book this winter season. I live in NYC and busy, these one-pot meals will be such a time saver for me. I was actually peeved that her last book did not contain many one-pot mealsNext up on my list is the Shrimp tempura bowl, Arroz con pollo, chickpea mofongo, turkey and sweet potatoes dinner, chicken souvlaki dinner ... :)I notice some unfair reviews left for this book, Gina is not affiliated with weight watchers and this is not a weight watchers book! Thank god for the rest of us who are not fans of the program and just want to eat healthy balanced meals. Also, these are one pot meals! logically the calories are going to be higher than are other books which focused on just sides or entrees etc. !I am lactose intolerant and yes there are many cheese recipes, Skinny taste recipes often contain milk products so no surprise there but you can easily find substitutes and aged hard cheeses are safe for us who are just moderately intolerant from what I read.So if you are Paleo, low carb, Keto or whatever the latest fad is these days, this book is not for youIf you love cooking using your instant pot, air fryer, sheet pans or grills to churn out quick, delicious, healthy family-friendly meals then this should be your go-to book this winter season

I received my Kindle version overnight and have been looking at the recipes all morning, trying to decide what to try first. Every recipe looks delicious, and uses easy to find ingredients, and none look bad to to me. The illustrations are beautiful. I own all 3 Skinnytaste cookbooks and this one is already my favorite.

I fortuitously stumbled upon one of the authors of this guide at a bookstore in New Orleans. As many businesses and restaurants have closed in New Orleans since Katrina, I was in search of something current. This book had just been released the week I was in town (March 2007) so I went ahead and picked one up. As I had limited time to spend in the city and it was my first time there, I quickly became acquainted with the Pulse Guide. In addition to listing all of the recommendations I had gotten from friends who were locals, this book covered everything I needed to find. When I travel, I like to live more like a local rather than hitting the typical tourist joints. This book enabled me to do that while ensuring I was still hitting the must-sees.The book starts out with a list of the 99 best things to do in New Orleans. It breaks it down into 33 categories (e.g., late-night eats, po' boy joints, neighborhood bars, spas) with 3 top selections in each category. This made the must-sees easy for me. Because I wasn't wasting time trying to find out where to go, I was actually able to hit several of the 99 best.Night+Day New Orleans is easy to navigate for several reasons. It lists the businesses by name in a "black book" at the end of the guide, where it quickly notes the address, website, area, phone #, type of experience and page number for more details. Then, the guide divides the detailed descriptions by the following 3 categories: Cool, Bohemian and Classic. This way I could quickly gauge the vibe of a place. It also gives sample itineraries as well as city essentials, events, and a cheat sheet. I knew I had done a good job covering the city when I found a list of 9 "streets to stroll" in the cheat sheet section and realized I had made it to all of them. The only improvement I would like to see is more maps. There are only 2 maps in the back of the guide, and often they were not detailed enough for me to use for navigation. One area (Riverbend) was frequently referred to but not even listed on the map. As a result, I got a separate map in addition to the book to get around.Overall I liked this book so much that I plan to get one for my own city (San Francisco) to see what I've been missing. Highly recommended.

Review

'Without doubt the outstanding book in critical and cultural theory published in 2003' -- Martin McQuillan, Edtiro of The Year's Work in Critical and Cultural Theory, for the English Association'This is a brilliant book, Royle's writing is astonishingly adventurous. The book is indispensible to any study of the uncanny and thus to any study of literature. A critical tour de force.' -- Textual Practice'A playful, scholarly study. Densely and allusively argued, yet also full of pregnant one-liners. A fascinating and ambitious work.' -- The Guardian'At last, a philosophical work that discusses ghosts and madness seriously. Royle, in a style that is warmly engaging right from the preface, speaks directly to the reader. For an academic book this is a hell of a page-turner. A compulsive book.' -- Pireandello.org.uk

Nicholas Royle is a brilliant academic author. You will enjoy reading his prose: it flows and he talks to you in a wonderful conversational style. There is no obscure jargon, nor are there any impenetrable sentence structures. I am studying the topic of the "Uncanny and Death" in relation to dying from Cancer. Royle's book is my bible. He includes a very extensive annotated bibliography. This is the definitive text on the Uncanny. I have been using it since it was first published in 2003.

Royle is absolutely brilliant as a writer and thinker. This book will teach psychoanalysts and any intellectual the complexity what it means to be human.

I decided to read this book due to an interest in unusual psychological experiences and I must say that the experienced sense of the "uncanny" is a decidedly interesting psychological experience. However it must be emphasised that this book is more a book that analyses the notion of the uncanny as a literary phenomena rather than a purely psychological phenomena. The result is that within this book there is a lot of self-referencing by the author who is writer discussing an aspect of writing, namely the uncanny aspect of writing. There is much analysis of how the uncanny and its related psychological manifestations are written about by the likes of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Derrida with Freud's text "The Uncanny" being interpreted as in some way itself "uncanny" in nature. I found the first half of the book which discusses Freud writing on the uncanny as more tangible to read then later chapters which seem to focus more on discussing the writings of the philosopher Jacques Derrida. It has sometimes been said that Derrida's writing is obscure with references to subject matter and ideas that are never made clear to his readers. The inaccessible nature of Derrida is doubled by Royal's equally inaccessible elaboration on his ideas and it left me feeling confused as to why I can understand the meanings of the individual words but not always sentences that they form. Also, the conversational tone of Royal's writing at times left me feeling like I was simply not part of the conversation. As a result I am tempted to take the view that maybe some of the Derrida-based analysis in this work is all part of some "post-modern gibberish," as the mathematician Alan Sokal might argue, but perhaps I am missing the context. Fortunately, some of the "being-too-clever-for-my-good" was not lost on me. I particularly enjoyed one chapter in which Royal discusses the uncanny relation between himself and another writer who shares his name. A photo is shown of the two "Nicholas Royals" standing side-by-side. Because "The Uncanny" is more a book about literature then it is about human psychology I felt that Royal extends the notion of the uncanny far beyond the scope that most psychoanalysts, psychologists and psychiatrists would perhaps extend it. For example, the uncanny is seen in Royal's analysis as manifesting not just in unusual psychological moments such as Deja Vu or epilepsy but also in the very act of writing. Once that leap is made, the subject matter quickly transmutes into discussion more about writing and the canon of literature then about the uncanny. Still, until someone brings out a book on the uncanny that is more psychology focused, this book stands as the only one that explores this fascinating and "uncanny" subject.

good old school books cheap

Good reference. Timely arrival.

The book is old but it gives a good explanation on how to implement win32 API programming techniques in basic and also explains how this whole idea works. It seems to be useful for a beginner, later one can extend this knowledge in more recent and modern implementation of the same idea. The Book I purchased was a used one but it was clean and arrived fast. For this reason I would consider a very good rating point for the provider.

This is a great VB API book. I think it ranks up there with Appleman's books. But this book is different. It is actually fun to read and yet at the same time it covers the important detail. Somehow it makes the details easy to read and fun. This book does a GREAT job of going behind the scenes in the Windows operating system. There's lots of good information about how Windows manages things and then how to work around this. There is an interesting and informed disussion of BSTR's. The author reviews the history of VB3's strings vs. VB4 and higher strings. He also covers the interesting aspects of overcoming VB's limitations of not having signed numbers. His discussion of two's complement storage was really interesting.Where Appleman is encyclopedic, this author goes into deep detail but makes it interesting. It is not one of those simple books with the focus of "here's how to make 500 API calls that might be interesting."This book is VB centric in that it explains the differences between the VB world and the Win32/VC++ world. Then you get this great feeling of insight as to why VB does the things it does.I recommend this book highly, and also recommend the Appleman books. They're different kinds of animals.

This is a very hard book (for VB programmer with no C experience) BY NECESSITY.Normally, you would like the programming book to have some explanation and plenty of code examples. In the case of Win32 APIfor VB programmer, once you get all the intricacies, you just need to find the API function from API viewer applet that comes with Visual Studio. Why is the book hard by necessity?C and VB have enough differences (e.g. variable type size differences, signed and unsigned type differences etc) to make the interoperability of languages difficult. Add to this the complexity of the Windows architecture itself and C + VB + WIN32becomes much more complex, than just C + Win32, which makes me wonder, why use VB at all, if you are planning to make an extensive use of WIN32. Much easier to code in C or C++! Back to the book.It does excellent job explaining C + VB + Win32 API interactionthoroughly. He leaves no stone unturned. If you absorb the book cover to cover, you can consider yourself guru in the area. You want need anything else than API function declarations. In short, this is a book for ONLY DEDICATED, serious programmer, intending not just to spice up his code with occasional API calls, but ending up with FULL UNDERSTANDING OF ALL ISSUES.

First, this seems like mostly a C book, not a VB book as the title implies. Sure, the C structures and function call variables are usually provided w/translations (but not always!). And there is a whole chapter on VB strings. But I got the impression the author doesn't know a ton about VB and why a VB programmer might want/need to concern himself with the API function calls. This didn't phase me a ton because I know C, but I thought a lot of the text wasn't much about VB at all.First-and-a-half, the author is running Windows NT, so if you're like me and on Win 95/98 you may at times feel like you're being left out. He does go to some lengths to compare and point out the differences between the two OS's, but (again) I felt like he was a C/NT programmer rather than a VB/9x programmer.Second, even though the intro says its for both VB5 and VB6, I use the former and couldn't get the crucial examples on the CD to run without first hunting down and finding the needed DLL's on the I-Net one-by-one. This was a tedious process because after a program would clear past one error message on startup it'd hit the next one. And so on. This was a huge hassle. It probably didn't help that the one bad spot on my CD was the dll.readme file (maybe all this was pointed out in there) -- I probably should have taken the book back, but then I would have had to wait for them to order another one and for it to come in, go back a third time to get it, etc...Third, the book is not any sort of complete reference to the API functions. Some of the chapters only mention a couple of the functions relevant to the topic, or at least give you the feeling there's more out there that you might want to know about. The functions that are mentioned sometimes only have one or two of their parameters explained (as if the others don't matter). So if you're looking for an API reference book, this probably isn't it.At least most of the typos in the book can be found at O'Reilly's website, though a careful reader can find a couple that haven't been flagged.I expected a better book. At least the writing is clear.

First, let me say that this is an excellent reference on the Windows API. I highly reccomend it. That being said, the example source code in this book is not of top-notch quality. The author frequently uses vague variable names such as A-Z, lng, and the like. In fact, it looks like he was trying to program like he would in C in VB. Yes, the source code is understandable, but only after long decipherations. I would give it a 5 if the author had taken more time in his source.

This book focuses on the Win32 API from a WinNT/9x standpoint, highlighting the differences between the two in a clear and concise way. If you are doing development on a Win2K box, however, then this book is probably not the best resource. The sections on the differences between WinNT and Win9x are largely irrelevant now, but the book is still a good resource for understanding how Windows works behind the scenes. If this book is updated to include current information, I would definately buy it again.

Review

“In this impassioned memoir, a young man finds a community flourishing in a city so depopulated that houses are worth less than a used Chevy.…Philp ably captures the frontier feel of Detroit as he laboriously rehabs his ruined house from foundation to roof. His homebuilding narrative is engrossing….The book shines [in its depiction of] the ‘radical neighborliness’ of ordinary people in desperate circumstances.” —Publishers Weekly“[Philp] quickly becomes an involved resident, using creativity, resourcefulness, ingenuity, and positive thinking to create a place for himself in a depressed city…highly recommended for general readers interested in the history and resurgence of Detroit and other U.S. cities.” —Library Journal“Engrossing…Philp is a great storyteller, and he has done a good job of documenting his struggles to carve out a home. It’s also easy to see why he intends to stay.” —Booklist“[A] deeply felt, sharply observed personal quest to create meaning and community out of the fallen city's ‘cinders of racism and consumerism and escape.’ Philp ably outlines the broad issues of race and class in the city, but it is the warmth and liveliness of his storytelling that will win many readers. A standout in the Detroit rehab genre.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review“Lots of young bohemian types are fascinated by Detroit—land of the fabled $500 house!—but few take the plunge as headily as Drew Philp did, not only buying his own place but renovating it from the inside out, getting to know the neighbors, and learning about one of America's most fascinating cities as only a true resident can. Philp writes about his experience with sensitivity, humility and humor, and his voice is a necessary addition to the literature of the Motor City.” —Mark Binelli, author of Detroit City is the Place to Be“Downright eloquent and deeply moving. Beyond the sheer, compelling force of Philp’s writing, his account is insistently honest and full of insight. No shortcuts. No unrealistic fantasies. No pretenses of the sort that made my nerves twitch before I gave up on the literature of Nightmare Detroit. Philp the 23-year-old kid comes alive convincingly, in all of his confused but determined effort to rebuild a house and sink roots. He captures the city in all of its horrors and hopes, contradictions and blind faith.” —Frank Viviano, eight-time Pulitzer Prize-nominee, and National Geographic writer since 2001“An important and powerful memoir that looks at the struggles and great efforts being spent on breathing life into a decayed city, and delves into the complicated and diverse people trying to carve out better futures.” —New York Journal of Books“A fascinating inside look….Philp writes with exuberance and sincerity....Inspiring.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. It's very well written and full of characters that come to life. A couple things keep me from giving it five stars, but it's still a highly enjoyable, inspiring, and entertaining book.A little background to give perspective: I was born in 1961 and raised in Detroit's Cass Corridor, on 4th street just off Grand River. My dad worked on the Cadillac assembly line. I saw the 1967 riots with my own eyes, National Guard tanks and troop carriers drove right by my house. As a white kid in an overwhelmingly black city, I was the minority. By the time I was born, the neighborhood was already on the decline, but after the riot it quickly deteriorated even more. Despite this, we had good times walking to Tiger Stadium or downtown. When I was 11, we moved to a "better" neighborhood, which also quickly declined, especially in the 80s. Despite its problems, I loved my life in Detroit, and although I moved away in my 20s, I still have family there, visit when I can, and consider it home.First, I'll get a couple things out the way that I didn't care for.The author, by his own admission, was/is a very idealistic young man with a lot of opinions about race, class, wealth, poverty, Chinese labor, corporations, banks, politics, and everything that touches our lives. This is fine. No story of Detroit can be told without the context of those issues. However, a point that is made in one paragraph sometimes extends into a page or more of text. Although it's always well-written, sometimes it's a bit much. Along the same line, although I loved the author's poetic writing style, there are portions where it became, to use a cliche, too much by half. These issues were enough to sometimes take me out of the story. One other minor thing, which is true of most non-fiction books I read. Maybe it's just me, but I like knowing the dates, even just the year, of events in a non-fiction narrative. If chapter titles or section breaks had included months and years, I would have kept a better grasp of how things were progressing. Not a mark against it, but just something I personally find helpful. Now, on to the positive. As I said, I was raised in inner-city Detroit. It could be scary, but that was life and I didn't know anything else existed. Despite my love for Detroit, and knowing that it is full of good people, I admit that I would never be courageous enough to do what the author did. He faced an incredible obstacle, self-made to be sure, but through hard work, patience and perseverance, he accomplished something pretty amazing. It's easy to pontificate about "making things better" but most of us stop short of putting any really hard work into it when our discomfort exceeds our convictions. The author put his convictions into action, and didn't quit. There would have been no shame in quitting at any point on his journey; he would have been given credit and admiration for giving it a shot. He could have driven in from the country every day or every weekend, and volunteered on some project, and that too would be worthy of praise. But he put himself on the line and gave it everything he had, without thinking he was going to be the "white savior."Despite my caveats above, I did enjoy the poetic nature of the writing, and the placement of "Detroit" as both a city and a concept within the context of history and world events. The details were vivid and the personalities shined through. The author definitely caught the essence of the Detroit I remember: hard working people fighting to make things better, a little at a time; neighbors evolving from suspicious to "family"; people with few resources willing to give away what little they have. I also enjoyed the author's descriptions of places I am familiar with, such as Belle Isle and the Detroit Institute of Arts.Overall, the positives of this book far outweigh any issues I had with it, and I do highly recommend it. I would read more by this author.

Being a lifelong Detroiter, this book really brings to life the trial, blight and macabre fascination the country has with Detroit. The rest of the country views Detroit as a violent hellhole, and there is a lot of truth to that. But what is missing from the viewpoint, is the other side of Detroit: the decent, hard-working, determined people who call it home.Living in Detroit is not for the faint-hearted, which is why Drew Philp's experience is unique and compelling. Sure, at times his naiveté occasionally clouds his judgment. He is a guy from a small-town in rural Michigan, educated at the fairly prestigious (but equally pretentious) University of Michigan. His time living in a impoverished portion of the city is wrought with new life experiences, different both in what he expected, and in what he was prepared for. His story, though, is not one of idealism or even self-congratulatory braggadocio. It is a story of a collapsing urban center, and an idealistic young man who not only wanted a cheap place to live, but to become one of a community... a community different than the one he grew up in, or the one he was educated in.The book is a lot of stories. Stories about building a roof, or trying to get heat, electricity and plumbing. But it is also so much more. It is about understanding yourself, your neighbors and your local government. As he nears completion of his house, Philp himself grows. Gone are those stereotypes he showed up with, replaced with respect for the people of Detroit, as well as self-respect.This is the kind of a book you can read in one sitting, because Philp's ability to tell a story keeps you turning page after page. His heartfelt honesty and determination are inspirational, and it shows Detroit in a light that no one outside of Detroit ever sees.

I was very skeptical when I picked this up. I had heard good things about the book, but I've certainly read enough "Transplant Discovers Himself/Herself In The 'Authentic', Postapocalyptic Landscape of Detroit And Writes About It" that I wanted to approach this with caution. I didn't quite put two and two together that this was the book that grew out of the 2014 Buzzfeed piece that made its rounds on the interweb, right around the time I was starting to do some work in Detroit but before I moved there-- a piece that seemed to capture a lot of what I was thinking about at the time.First, Philp is an excellent storyteller. He is able to weave a series of small, seemingly inconsequential moments into a deeper, broader narrative that frame his own personal growth as well as the gradual but stark evolution of a neighborhood. Philp tackles basic questions of growing up-- dealing with family, dealing with love and heartbreak- alongside bigger, enormously complicated and utterly important questions: What does it mean to redevelop such a spectacularly decimated city like Detroit? How can we claim "community" when we really mean "consumption"? Is the suspension of urban democracy an acceptable price to pay for revitalization? Many of these questions are posed rhetorically, as if to say, "if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention," and Philp illustrates them through a gamut of individual moments, like the immediate challenges of living in a neighborhood where you have to fear for your life because of stray dogs, as well as broader trends (housing and interstate highway development, or, for example, the cultural crusade against the city by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, whose racism could readily contend with Jeff Sessions or your local neighborhood Grand Dragon).Philp's take on race is particularly notable. He provides germane, unapologetically critical commentary on the history of race relations in the Motor City, but he often doesn't describe characters by their race. This is especially interesting as a lot of the artsy, newer transplants to Detroit do not reflect the racial makeup of the city (but are anyway fairly diverse). Indeed, the inability of any new group in Detroit to mirror the demographics of the city (he mentions Alex Hill's critique of the demographics of an army of imported technocrats) is enormously problematic but also something Philp isn't trying to solve-- it's still interesting that he becomes an integral member of this neighborhood, sort of by accident, and comments on the macro picture of race relations while not identifying many of the local characters by their race.At times, the critical commentary added into his writing can seem a bit facile. He sometimes seems to be ignoring the bigger picture of some of the social and economic pressures that affect him and his neighbors, and I think this is the kind of thing that would be solved through some more research and editing (Nathan Bomey's book, for example, covers analytically a lot of the topics that Philp touches on). As a reader and a Detroit resident I sometimes find myself frustrated at how detached he seems from the city at large, for example, vaguely mentioning a bar or a restaurant without mentioning its name, or mentioning his daily grind to make the bucks but not mentioning where he actually worked, his relationship with his coworkers, or what he sets up as a critical critique of his place of employment within the "New Detroit." I wouldn't say he makes any "unfounded" conclusions but rather sometimes just "underfounded." There are no glaring factual errors, by any means, but there are some minor errors and lack of connected dots that I think could be addressed through further examination. There is also a strange sort of Midwestern millennial hamartia, a Hemingwayesque self-flagellation that Philp seems to periodically indulge in, like, "Hey, you know, I could work for the man and be able to afford a loan on this house, but I'd rather suffer through the cold and the winter and drink and smoke heavily." Having fixed up my own house in a Rust Belt city and struggled through millennial underemployment in a crap recession economy, I can say that there is a degree to which this dedication should be lauded, but also to which it is really a personal choice and, sometimes, indeed, a less expedient choice. But he's not losing out in doing it, and I think that's sort of the point. He doesn't get up on a high horse about the "authenticity" of the Detroit experience but rather his ability to get back in touch with the authenticity of human experience of community itself, and basically castigates the hype and heavy marketing around the purported "authenticity" of the New Detroit, which I appreciate because I kind of hate it.Where Philp fails to delve deeper into a more rigorous sort of critical or academic examination of the economic and political climate of Detroit and urban planning at large, he makes up for it by identifying the overall deficiencies of a system that has failed to serve the poor and especially the citizenry of Detroit. This is a must read for any millennial, any Rust Belt transplant, and certainly anyone moving to Detroit.

I bought these for my 9-year-old for Christmas and she absolutely adores them. She told me the other night that she reads them at night, right before bedtime.

My daughter absolutely loves this series. It is nice to have the box to hold all of the books to make sure none of them are misplaced for when she is ready to move on to the next book. The stories are easy to read, but long enough that it will take a while to read the books. What is nice about having to come back to the book day after day is that we get to work on reading comprehension. We recount what has happened in the story thus far, make our guesses on what will happen and read the next chapter or two.The text is not very large but it is fine for my eyes. Additionally, there are a few pictures scattered in here and there which makes it a little more fun. She gets to compare what she is envisioning with the story's pictures. All in all, this is a good chapter book for young children. I would recommend reading it while being a slightly stronger reader - maybe 3rd grade or so.

My 7 y.o. granddaughter loved them...she's started on collection #2. I'll be ordering collection #3 before I know it. I told my daughter to get that girl a library card or this Nana is going to go broke. :) She also loves the Junie B. Jones, The Boxcar Children, and The Littles series. She is an avid reader.

Exactly what I expect. Four books perfectly tailored to a young girl who loves Disney and all things fairy. The text is large enough to help a beginner keep his/her place when reading. They are large enough books to give the reader a sense of accomplishment, but not so large they become discouraged. If I had more than one niece I would definitely buy this for them all.

These are level four reading books not for age 6. More like age 8 to 12. The description should include they are level 4. Purchased for my 1st grader 6 year old granddaughter and she won’t be ready to read these for at least 2 years.

My daughter is 5, and has a very short attention span. We received it yesterday and so far she had me read 3 chapters before bedtime. This series hits all her faves, bff's, fairies, etc! I'm so happy I finally found a book she will sit through.

I bought this for my daughter's 7th birthday. She absolutely loves reading and thought this would be a great set for her to get her to the next level. Plus she always talks about peter pan, fairies and mermaids so this fits right into that theme :-)

My daughter loved the series. Here is some information about it.In a blink of an eye, four best friends all get their biggest wish—they're whisked off to Never Land, home to Tinker Bell and her fairy friends. A great gift for readers ages 6-10, this attractive box contains the first four Never Girls adventures—In a Blink, The Space Between, A Dandelion Wish, and From the Mist.

My daughter who is a second grader got theses books for Christmas. She just gobbled them up. I love that they are chapter books. There were a few challenging words for her but over all she understood the premise. Love that they a tinker bell based and additional series.

This is really an excellent book. It is very well -referenced. it offers just the right amount of history, background and necessary physiology, and then dives right into very well organized and clearly described exercises.

This is book is not what I expected at all. I didn't have much time to spend on what book to buy for my vacation, and for some reason chose this one. It was a complete waste of money. It is a very very basic book, I felt like it was written for seniors, especially when the author went on about safety of walking bare feet for pages... There has been numerous books written on benefits of earthing or grounding. I started skipping through it after about 20%, since I knew at that point that I won't get much out of this one. I have been doing meditation, Yoga, qi gong for over 15 years, and all of that was way more effective and helpful than this. He gives very specific assignments to memorize and follow (like at high school) and do it for months adding some other formula to it every week, and doing it for years. There was a lot of anatomy review of various senses and nervous system, which was nothing new for me. I was hoping that the primal awareness part of the book will be more interesting, but it wasn't. All it was his specific instructions on how to get closer to nature, such as go on a tree stand in a forest and spend hours there, how to bury yourself overnight safely etc. Even when he was sharing his experiences of being buried alive and having NDE, there was no any inspiring insights other than it changed his life, gave him different perspective on things, more feeling of connection to Earth and confidence. It's surprising it took him that much to feel that, he could have done it way easier with yoga and qi gong, probably within a week of practice. The only thing I might try from this book is using solid color backgrounds when I meditate on chakras with specific colors, which is hard to visualize for a long time, but I am not going to hold a piece of fabric for 10-15 min, that's not going to help me relax, I will find easier way to do it. Overall, you can help yourself more by going to youtube for free and finding what appeals to you, such as hypnosis from Michael Sealey, healing videos and mantras from Nipun Aggarwal etc. So, unless you are very new to any kind of relaxation techniques, don't waste your money.

I’m a big fan of Autogenic Training. I cut my teeth on this process as a fresh Ph.D. looking for an alternative to hypnosis to explore altered states of consciousness and the psychic/spiritual realms. Hypnosis, as popular and effective as it is, nevertheless has an aura of ambiguity around it—What is hypnosis? How can you tell if someone is hypnotized and how “deeply”?—our answers to such questions are more matters of operative convenience than necessarily agreed upon specific realities, such as a saying it is a state of heightened suggestibility. Besides, being “suggestible” doesn’t sound like a positive attribute. Autogenic Training, however, has very specific steps in a mind-body process of disengaging the conscious-sensory mind and activating the subliminal mind, the subconscious and its imagination and ability to affect bodily functions. The training also gives specific focus to developing the skill of “passive volition.”Set your intention, and then let go and let the intention do the work. I’m sure you’ve heard of such advice. In Autogenic Training, we learn this specific skill. To the wise, passive volition actually is suggestibility, but one voluntarily engaged as a positive, creative act. This same ability underlies the various improvisational arts, including “channeling,” although this fact may be hard to recognize by folks who maintain a dualistic notion of reality. I have found Autogenic Training opens an important doorway to higher consciousness. I’m glad to come across a book that focuses on this spiritual dimension of Autogenic Training.Advanced Autogenic Training and Primal Awareness: Techniques for Wellness, Deeper Connection to Nature, and Higher Consciousness, by James Endredy is truly a new and innovative approach to AT, one that respects the important basics, but which goes far beyond what the creators of AT had originally imagined. The author has written previously on the subject and knows it well, but he has brought to it an entirely new (to AT) dimension, one that I have been familiar with and am glad to see the connection I’ve experienced be explored—“primal awareness.” The author shows us how to use AT to develop this special relationship to the outer world. Primal awareness has to do with a very fundamental response that we have (but often ignore) to the outer world. It is easiest to recognize when I give as an example, “the vibes we feel when we walk into a forest.” It is a direct experience of inner relatedness. Something about the forest “speaks to us.” It is not what we see, and it is not “feeling” in the sense of emotionality, but something we perceive nevertheless. In my work, I call it “seeing with heart awareness,” but regardless of the name we give to it, it is a dimension of consciousness that has the effect of uniting us with the world, rather than separating us as our senses do.The first half of the book gives the Autogenic Training part. He has expanded its applicability in many ways, going beyond generalized healing to working with the subtle energies of the body parts, and introduces color and other modalities to accomplish a wide variety of goals. The second half of the book he explains how to build upon the AT skills to develop your primal awareness of your surroundings and how to interact with it accordingly. This work takes us into many types of initiation rituals that allow us to form working alliances with nature. Reading his accounts of making a primal connection with the elements, water, air, fire, and water, I found that even imagining it as I read to be a very inspirational experience. If you have the time to spend alone exploring your consciousness, this book will keep you busy and entertained for several years! Think of the money you’ll save from not bothering to go to the movies!
