Where Downton Abbey draws an elaborate picture of old societal structures falling apart in post WW 1 England, Fowler takes the reader into the Gilded Age of the United States where old class lines have begun to solidify again. In more than one way, “A Well-Educated Woman†may remind the reader of the social paintings of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Last Tycoon†, Evelyn Waugh’s “A Handful Of Dustâ€, Turgenev’s “Rudin†or even Tolstoj’s “Anna Kareninaâ€. I enjoyed reading this interpretation of Alva Vanderbilt’s life. As a retired history teacher, I was aware of her importance in the passage of the 19th amendment but I knew little about the woman. This was interesting, held my attention and showed the reader a glimpse of the Gilded Age in America. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction. The only reason it is not given 5 stars is due to the ending being rushed, leaving this reader feeling like “that’s it?â€
Having just read several history books about the Vanderbilts, I was eager to read this novel about Alva Vanderbilt. This was an engaging and touching story filled with all the trappings and rules that wealth demands. Alva was a force to be reckoned with, designing and building many homes, demanding that her daughter marry for wealth and title, divorcing her husband, and supporting the voting rights for women. The story expands to the other Vanderbilt family members providing the reader with a deeper understanding of their difficulties and wealth accumulation. I found this very interesting and enjoyable reading.
Therese Anne Fowler has once again given us a look of what it would be like in the life of a golden era woman. This is stellar look at the life of Alva Vanderbilt and family. Top notch! I received this book as an egalley from #netgalley
This is well written and I enjoyed reading it. I liked Z better, but I think it's because I am more interested in the topic. Fowler is excellent at character development. This book helped me appreciate how far women have come in a hundred years.
Theresa Anne Fowler has written a book that should be part of Women's Study courses in colleges. The current fascination with poor, underprivileged females who achieved success completely ignores the important stories of the women of privilege who came before. Going against the societal rules made them more courageous examples of bravery. This is a thoroughly enjoyable, intelligent story of a feminist heroine.
This was a selection made by my book club, and I was more or less obligated to read it. I ended up loving the book! Its well written, and while it is fiction, its based on historic people and events. I have an interest in the gilded age and the ridiculously enormous homes they built. This brings you right into that world with the Vanderbilts but also gives you a glimpse into the behind the scenes of these wealthy people during the time in which they lived. I always thought Alva and her peers were nothing but idle rich, but you find out she was so much more.
This is an enjoyable evening read. The writing is clear and crisp, and the story is generally interesting.What's most interesting to me is to compare the setting of this book—the time when the "robber barons" were building their fortunes—with today.In some ways, much has changed. In other ways, little has changed.
