Rev. William L. Burton, O.F.M., is a scripture scholar. He also serves as a provincial councilor for the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart.He was a member of the board of trustees of the Catholic Theological Union and served stints as vice president for mission and ministry, vice president of academic affairs, and a professor at Quincy University. Burton also was director of academic formation for the diaconate program in the Diocese of Springfield and a visiting professor at DePaul University. A regular speaker at the Los Angeles Religious Education Conference and other venues, Burton also has been involved in numerous parish Bible study programs and scripture-based retreats in the United States, Canada, and Rome. He has also served as a frequent pilgrimage guide through the Holy Land, Greece, and Turkey.

I love Father Bill's writing style and how down to earth it is. It is easily accessible for groups of "cradle Catholics" who have been Catholic, and newer Catholics or those who are questioning their faith. It also is good for both young and old as Father Bill's authenticity is shown throughout. A highly recommended read for those who enjoy Scripture Scholarship.

How many of us have the education and years of experience to truly understand the Bible? Fr. Burton is one of the most studied biblical scholars out there. And instead of keeping this knowledge to himself, he chose to write a book to share his knowledge with all of us. What a gift!Abba Isn't Daddy is filled with insights that the lay person would never otherwise know. In the first section, it provides needed context - historical, political, geographic, etc. - about the times in which the Bible was written. FANTASTIC! Game of Thrones withdrawals helped me find this trilogy. And I am delighted it did. One reviewer wrote that it was hard to connect with one character. This, I did find to be true if book one, but did not lessen my interest. By book two, however, I clearly connected. By book three, I had that panicky feeling that I was reaching the end of my Acacia journey and would be searching for another fix and hoping Mr. Durham was possibly working on a book four! The complexity of the trilogy builds and builds, secrets within secrets...fabulous.The characters are brought to life...love them, hate them, love them again. For fans of GOT and certainly for fans of the Dune series. I do not believe you will be disappointed.

Note; This review assumes you have read the previous books in this trilogy, "Acacia: The War with the Mein," and "The Other Lands.""The Sacred Band," the last of the Acacia trilogy, wraps things up nicely. Mena must contend against a monstrous (in every sense of the word) invasion, Dariel's still involved in what was called "The Other Lands" until now, Corinn continues to sing out magic, and returned from the dead Aliver is still under her spell.As before, the tale is told from multiple pov's with cliffhangers often ending each chapter. This can be frustrating; in one case there is a more than 100-page gap before one of the threads is picked up again. But, because the author tries to keep the chronology intact, it's probably best not to jump ahead.Of course, everything comes together beautifully at the end--maybe you'll think a little too beautifully. The solutions to several of the dilemmas the characters face may seem just a bit too pat; and some struck me as somewhat naïve and sentimental. But the author has his visions of how things should go; I have mine. The book is his.Regardless, as before, there's much to like. I found Mena's adaption of guerrilla-war tactics intriguing; I smirked at the poor blundering League, whose tactics and arrogance lead once again to major ineptitude; and thrilled to the exploits of quasi-dragon Elya. (Speaking of dragons: spot the Anne McCaffrey reference!)Note, too, that while Mr. Durham has certainly rung down the curtain on this saga, I see no reason why he can't return to this world he made. The survivors have quite a job ahead of them if they are to achieve their goals, and maybe the author will want to show us how they accomplish that. I for one hope he will.

As others have pointed out, the closing volume of this trilogy really developed some characters, in particular the Akaran Queen Corinn. Her characters was despicable and lovable, sympathetic and complex. Some of the other characters also burst from the page, particularly the colorful lot in the "Other Lands."If you enjoy other fantasy fiction that feels rooted in something real, in people's psychology and the complexity of relationships and of politics, you will enjoy this series, and in particular this last book. It really is epic, following the stories of well over a dozen characters in one way or another. Yet, it is also very intimate, delving into the minds of a core group of people and their relationships to one another; the complexity and ultimately simple (loving!) nature of sibling relationships were particularly well-rendered. It is also particularly nice to see people like you (if you are not considered white by our society) reflected in fantasy fiction in a positive light.All in all, a great read. I look forward to more fiction from D.A. Durham!

The Acacia books are worth a single chapter from The Sacred Band -- The Coronation. That chapter alone is worth the ride and eclipses any complaints I may have, so I will not list my complaints. No fantasy reader should have a memory that doesn't include this astonishing chapter.I talked about shoe-horning in my review of The Other Lands, but I should have been a good fantasy reader and just let the question ride. The Sacred Band answered my burning question about why The Quota were also sterile. Thanks very much for that, David! I'm more than satisfied.Like the previous books, there are chapters I love and ones that didn't move me. But that can be said for every book I read.I had a moment of panic that David was going to leave me hanging on one very important thread of the story, but the epilogue tied it up nicely.David has a unique voice. I'm happy he decided to write some fantasy, for there is precious little good fantasy novels around.These books are worth a second read.

The last of this trilogy lived up to the sweeping tale begun in book 1 and carried on so perfectly in book 2. The ending held wonderful twists and turns enough to satisfy my love of swashbuckling adventure, court intrigue and magic. No stock characters; no stereotypes, and the real world reflected in this fantasy one in bold, brilliant strokes. Loved it.

This trilogy had me riveted from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. Excellent character and plot development. Thank you David Anthony Durham.

This is the third book of the series and it was fantastic. I was completely distraught when I finished because I knew there was no more books to follow. David Anthony Durham is a great writer and I highly recommend any book he writes!

The Reverend Glandion Carney was associate pastor of pastoral care at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Birmingham, Alabama, until his recent retirement from active ministry. He was involved in Renovaré for fifteen years in the capacity of spiritual director and board member. He was also chaplain of the Christian Legal Society for twelve years and has published works in periodicals such as Christianity Today in addition to numerous books. A decent overview of world religions, but definitely skewed towards western (Christian/Jewish) religions and traditions. The very obvious overlook of Native American religions and little coverage of non-western religions were significant drawbacks. I was expecting a relatively equal, solid overview of the major existing religions, and this book did not deliver. I did however like the overview of what religion is and the map of where specific religions are primarily practiced.As an aside, which is clearly not relevant to what the author intended, a brief introduction to historic religions (Aztec, Egyptian, Greek, Nortic, etc) would have been ideal.

Bought it to piss off my super Christian mother in law. It worked.

This is such a great book for adults to share with their curious children. We are not church-goers, nor super religious. However, we are very spiritual and always try to do things with love and respect for all people, races, and religions. I strongly feel this is an enlightening book to try to help kids understand family and friends' holidays and gatherings that we may not necessarily follow in exactly the same way.

My son wanted to understand other religions (he's 7) and so we bought this. We are about 1/2 way through it at this point and we really love the illustrations and the explanations of these religions. If I don't watch out, I'll learn something too.

This was one of a couple of similar books purchased recently for my niece, a first-grader who's already reading above grade level and who has a habit of asking questions that leave the adults in the family wondering how to find the answer. She's not asking as many religion questions as she had been, but already corrected one classmate's comment with information I'm sure she got from this book. An added bonus has been that all her grownups have also been learning from this book! It's a little general (to be expected) but does a fairly good job of covering the basics of the world's major religions. Even more important, it does so with no obvious bias.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. It gives enough information to keep the attention without getting into too much detail about each religion. My 9 year old son is enjoying reading it with me.

My 5th-grader is reading this for homeschooling. She is learning the basics of each world religion and just recently, correctly identified the religious leanings of a certain movie character based on her learning from this book. Valuable reference tool.

Nice overview of different religions. Not too in-depth, but the illustrations and graphics make it appealling to younger readers. Covered more religions than Mary Pope Osborne's book, One World, Many Religions, but her book goes into more depth. This is probably the right amount of information for elementary school kids. For people who want more information about how religions are related to one another, or got started, etc., see the Osborne book.

I AM A LITTLE PARTIAL BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN PRINTING FOR THE LAST FIFTY YEARS.THE BOOK WAS VERY WELL DONE!

It was very pricey, but it went into depth about his life, and how the printing press worked ect. My daughter, who is 12 yo did a paper on him. Overall I'd rate it 4 stars (Because of the price)!
