I'm pregnant with our first baby, so I was excited to stock up on all the baby books. This book is cute and funny , but honestly my husband doesn't read it. If he takes a baby book in the bathroom with him, it's usually a 'real' book so he can learn what to expect and how to care for me and a newborn. Cute as a gift for an expecting couple, but I wouldn't recommend buying it for yourself or partner.
I bought this for my husband since I had my book, he could have his. Thought it would be a cute fun read for him. My husband read it, didn't really like it. He would rather read my 'what to expect book'. His comments were that this book did lack information, kind of made light of the fact that your wife is pregnant and made fun of the idea she would be reading so much to learn about what to expect and how to be prepared. My husband didn't appreciate the 'humor' suggesting you should have a beer to make things more 'bearable' at home, suggesting that your wife and kids are nagging you all the time.Love the idea that I gave my husband literature that suggests I'm nagging him. This is an exciting time for BOTH of us, my husband actually CARES about what changes we are going through together. No where does this book tell a man to, out of consideration for your wife... maybe keep the toilet clean without asking since she may be sick everyday.In my husbands words, this book is for all those men who try hard at being 'nice guys' but are really *******. So... if that's your man, or what you are hoping for... I'm sure he'd love this book, but doubt he'd read it. The only men who read this book are the ones who actually want to be involved. Disappointing the book takes everything so lightly.
Bought this for my husband to read while I read the actual "what to expect" book. I knew it would have a humorous tone, which is why I thought he'd like it. He does think it's funny but he says it leans a little too far to the comedy side and lacks the informative aspect that he was hoping to get. He didn't even come close to finishing it. It also sounds like the information given is a little bit dramatic in perspective and/or maybe not painting a totally accurate full picture. If you're looking for something that actually guides partners on pregnancy information and pregnancy support, I would recommend purchasing a different book.
This book is not useful in the least. My husband genuinely wants information to help prepare himself and to help me during this pregnancy, and this book doesn't provide much real information at all. I don't understand why there are so few books out there that don't imply men are neanderthals who only care about watching sports and sitting on the couch all day long. It is a darn shame.
If you want something more in-depth, keep looking. When expecting our first baby, I tried searching for a "man" version of What to Expect When You're Expecting, and found this instead. My husband had found What To Expect When She's NOT Expecting very helpful as we dealt with infertility, so we were hoping to find something similar now that we actually were expecting (finally!!). It said it was a parody so I knew it wouldn't be the exactly what I was looking for, but hopefully close. I bought this for my husband thinking it would be funny, but still full of good, useful information. After scanning it, I was less enthusiastic about giving it to him. He enjoyed a few of the jokes, but ultimately preferred to read my pregnancy books instead because they were more informative and actually helped him understand the pregnancy process my body was going through. Contrary to the title, the book doesn't really tell you "what to expect" - just makes a bunch of jokes about pregnant wives. Some are definitely funny, but be aware of what you're getting.This books seems more in the genre of a little joke book you'd put in your guest bathroom rather than a humorous and helpful pregnancy book for expecting fathers.
This was a very disappointing book. I feel like the guy who wrote this assumes that all men are all stereotypical idiots that are incapable of common sense. Its actually quite sexist towards men. I think it was supposed to be funny, but its just not. It's corny.. and im not the kind of person who gets offended by jokes or whatever either... it just didn't do a very good job of relating to the average man. Its like the book tried too hard. Oh well.. ill find another one to learn from. On a side note, it DID have info that was occasionally useful, but you had to sift through the BS to find it.
This book really doesn't tell you anything worth reading and only mentions a bit about what is said in the best selling legitimate books. For me all the comedic ranting wasn't worth the time to read as it wasn't even all that funny. Also, I wanted to know cold hard facts about pregnancy, what she goes through, what I can do, etc. as this was our first child. If you would rather understand what to really expect so you can do your best to more supportive, compassionate and loving through your pregnancy, do not purchase this book. The author of this book has a huge ego and the text is really wrapped around him impressing himself with all his witty little quips, snide commentary and run-on sentences. There is a reason this book is so short, it really serves no point. Again, please do not purchase. Save your money for a legitimate pregnancy book.
