Plot spoilers for Shapechanger's Progress and Shapechanger's Birth.Shapechanger's Progress - sequel to Shapechanger's Birth - picks up in 1861, seven years after Mary McCarthy awoke in her grave to find herself no longer in her dotage but, rather, de-aged to a 13-year-old girl's body. Mary is an immortal or as near as, suddenly endowed with a knack for rapid healing and other eerie abilities. With an uncanny, intimate knowledge of how her body works and able to effect change on a molecular level, Mary is a shapeshifter of incredible range, able to manipulate her form into whatever shape she wants.Shapechanger's Birth tracked Mary's incredible journey as she set out to make her mark in the world - or, at least, Ireland. By the end of Shapechanger's Birth, Mary McCarthy was well on her way to becoming a prosperous captain of industry, an accredited physician, and an influential if enigmatic patron of science and medicine. Oh, and, somewhere along the way, she'd also become the scourge of the criminal underworld and then its most feared kingpin.I will say that these two books are very wordy, but the rewards of reading them more than compensate for the excessive exposition. This series is a gas! Laer Carroll, with straightforward prose, knows how to write a strong, poised, assertive female that we right away latch onto. Mary is so bada--. I marvel at the scope of the things that she gets up to and how she's so creative with her abilities. In Shapechanger's Progress, Mary keeps keeping on with expanding her empire, both legal and illegal. All along, she's kept faith with her goal of transitioning Ireland's status from a paltry possession of England's - much like India and Arabia - to a robust nation what's on a level playing field with England. She knows the doing of that'll take more than a minute. But she's got time, being immortal or as near as.A product of the Victorian era, Mary approaches her supernatural state with a keen, analytical mind. Not for her the old wives' superstitions. She posits that "anything appearing supernatural and failing to obey natural law, was not. It was simply obeying laws that she did not yet understand." She's pretty much a modern woman stuck in the 19th century wherein culture dictates that women are treated like second citizens. Come to find, at least in Ireland, a woman with posessions surrenders those possessions to her man once she marries. The stuff you learn...It's gratifying that Mary still hangs with her first friends, specifically the two girls Mary considers to be her sisters: Barbara, the genius songstress known as the Kilrush Thrush, and Bridget, a remarkable seamstress and budding fashion designer. It's a sweeping saga that spans years in which Mary meets a sprawling number of people, some of whom pop up here and there as the story progresses. It's challenging to keep up with Mary's many guises, her "human" identities and the eldritch personas she creates to coax, intimidate, or put fear of the devil in. Because, sometimes, proper decorum doesn't get things done. Sometimes, neither doess simple bribery or blackmail. Princess Sharpclaws is my favorite of Mary's Elder Race inventions. I also like the selkie. There's bloody action, but it's few and far between. Still, the fighty fights are staged dynamically. Thing is, Mary comes across as so indomitable, there's no real sense of jeopardy when she goes up against someone. The closest thing to when I felt some trepidation for her was when she came across an adversary that just may have been an immortal like her. Mary reminds me quite a bit of Ell Donsaii, Laurence Dahners' do-it-all character, in how effortlessly she takes out fools and in how she goes about effecting change on a massive scale.Honestly, I didn't think I'd see anyone to match Dr. Dire's theaterical show of kayfabe, but Mary's up there with her. Who's Dr. Dire. She's a genius supervillain with brain damage who speaks in the third person, and she's epic. Andrew Seiple writes her exploits. For the history buffs, the writer peppers in a heap of historical figures. So, we get scenes of Mary's rubbing elbows with Prince Albert, Benjamin Disraeli, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, Mary Ann Evans a.k.a. George Eliot, Charles Dickens, etc. This roster would've made a heck of an Algonquin Round Table. Here's what sucks. Back in 2012, the author had promised a third book, titled Shapechanger's Destiny. But that was six years ago, and it's looking like Laer Carroll had moved on to other things, having left several plot threads dangling, including the one about other immortals. Oh, well, at least there's a new Ell Donsaii book out later in November.
Shapechanger's Progress is an interesting read, giving the development of Mary McCarthy, the Shapechanger and a look at late 19th Century Ireland and England. Good character development although the protagonist "discovers" new powers regularly. Could use closer editing.
Same stuff, different day. Grammatical errors. I must mention the error with the "bends". Nitrogen is absorbed by breathing compressed air at depth. Breathhold divers don't absorb so much and quickly ascending is not so important. Do your research.
Last Carroll writes the most engrossing books! I don't normally read history, but you have to love paranormal back in Ireland 's 1850's. So much detail in a very entertaining read.
This is a fun series and needs many more books added to it.
At my age, it is rare that I encounter anything that causes me to think well of humanity. This book is such a balm!I am saddened that I am the first to write a review of this work, but honored to be able to do so. :-)This is the second work that I have read from this author. It is better than the first, uplifting, fun and a celebration of life. The covers likely don't drive book sales as much as the author would hope. I delayed in reading these stories because I mistook a "low quality" cover as an indicator of the work within. I am glad that I finally got over it.This series follows a woman who discovers that she does not have a "normal" human lifespan or biology. Not understanding the reason for her unique physiology, she begins a very long journey of self discovery. To some, that might sound boring...This author makes the story anything but boring! What would you do with your life if you had more time and ability than you do now? Explore the world? Work to improve the human condition?Do yourself a favor and delve into this story to learn what this woman does with her "second chance". :-)
