This was a wo-dun-it with a little romance on the side. Mitch was a man suffering from PTSD, trying his best to survive the best way he knew how. Josie, his twin, was family, friend and confidant. A reviewer mentioned not understanding Trent and Mitch "friendship" I think that Trent is exactly what Mitch needs--someone to take him out of himself for a least a little while. The plot was good. I never once considered that it was, in fact, a conspiracy. I enjoyed reading it and hope there is another in the works with Mitch, Trent and Josie.
I love a good murder mystery, and the fact that Body in a Bathouse is set in LA is a nice bonus. One of the things I liked the most about this story was the balanace of methodical investigating, suspense, twists & turns and action. Sometimes mysteries are too predictable and other times so far fetched that it’s frustrating - this was squarely in the entertaining center of these extremes with enough unexpected plot twists to keep it really interesting. The romance aspect is a nice addition too. A fun read - I am looking forward to getting to know Mitch and the other characters better in future installments.
Cleverly written in limited first person view, _Body in a Bathhouse_ introduces us to Los Angeles through the bleak gaze of PI Mitch O'Reilly. Mitch is new to the PI game, and this is his first really big case.Author Brad Shreve utilizes that third person viewpoint to keep the reader guessing right along with Mitch as he doggedly puzzles out whodunit through realistic investigation - questioning and requestioning witnesses, tracking inconsistencies, and uncovering hidden connections. Mitch carefully sifts through the conflicts, misdirections, and his own inexperience until the case is resolved. Because Mr. Shreve executes the limited viewpoint so expertly, I was left guessing right up until the end._Body in a Bathhouse_ is a classic mystery - the mystery is the point. Although Mitch and the other characters are complex, and there are moments of humor and sorrow apart from the main plotline, we never forget that we are here to solve a mystery.This was a strong debut for Brad Shreve and Mitch O'Reilly. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
This is a new author for me. I enjoyed the plot and found the characters well developed and believable. Looking forward to the next book.
This is the first book from this author and, I hope, not the last. For me, this story reads like Dave Brandstetter in the 21st century (Brandstetter was a gay private eye debuted by Joseph Hansen in 1970). I like that Brad didn't spoon feed me as a reader but let Mitch be Mitch and reveal a lot of himself in his words and actions. This feels like the first of many and I'm excited about that. This is definitely a mystery and NOT a romance. So it's gritty. People are rather awful for dubious reasons. And loving the protagonist is not the point.
Following a character around while they ask questions should not be this enjoyable.If you ask me exactly what attracts me to this book, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint it. It's just one of those reads that are altogether entertaining.We have a sarcastic lead, nice details that sometimes sound as if listed off, but since we see the story unfold from the POV of a PI, it makes sense, and there's also a mystery and I love me a good mystery.By the way, this is like the old-fashioned detective stories, not like the modern, action-pack ones so until we get to the climax, expect a more chill pace.But back to the mystery and detective work.We are given as much info as Mitch - obviously, since it's his POV - so if you like to think alongside the detective in your crime novels, you'll be able to do that here. However... We were not given sufficient information to figure out who did it until the very end.On one hand, that's good, because we wouldn't know for sure by the time we are fifty percent into the book and spend the rest of our reading time screaming at Mitch "It's obvious that so-and-so did it!"On the other, we didn't get that satisfying "I figured who and why!" moment that makes us so proud of ourselves... Or at least makes me proud of myself when I solve the crime before the end of a novel.Even so, I very much enjoyed this book and it's got me hyped up for future Mitch O’Reilly mysteries.I'd recommend A Body in a Bathhouse to people who enjoy a more realistic approach to PI work.
Mitch is a private detective with a spyware store on the side. Barely eaking out a living, he get a job trying to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder.Trent manages the bathhouse where the man was killed. Mitch is interested in Trent but tries to be professional and not become involved with a person pertinent in the case.I loved the twists and turns in this book. I’ll admit I didn’t figure out who the murderer was till near the end. Good story with a lot of characters intriguing in their own right. Little bit of romance. Overall a good whodunnit.
