In the third novel of the Carpenter series, Andy struggles in an uphill battle to defend a seemingly guilty defendant as all the physical evidence points to his client, the son of a friend. Andy’s customary sense of humor, and, duty to find out the truth about his client, move the story along. Andy’s pursuits lead him to investigate unsolved, gruesome murders, as the plot delves into courtroom drama, and winds in and out of unexpected twists and turns. And, outside of outwitting pompous prosecutors, the only thing in life Andy Carpenter loves more than his girlfriend, Laurie Collins, and his golden retriever, Tara, are sports events of any kind.Rosenfelt ties the Andy Carpenter series together by characters and events, though each book stands independently of another.

I think Rosenfelt has written a dozen or so books with Carpenter as the protagonist... the first two are fine, easy reads, but by this the third installment the formula is starting to wear thin.No spoiler alert, but our hero Andy is convinced to defend another murder suspect, who despite the overwhelming evidence is... you get the idea. Rosenfelt does a great job with the understated characters in the book, but two was enough for me.

I discovered this series several months ago and I don't know how because I don't normally read "mystery/thrillers"; actually I usually read non fiction. But I am a reader of animal stories so I suppose that's how I was led to this series. BUT once I was hooked I had to go back and start at the beginning. His first book was nominated for some prize and it should have won; it was terrific. The last one I read is Rosenfelt's account of moving his Tara Foundation dogs. Loved that too. And I have just reserved his latest, but non Andy Carpenter, book from the library. I honestly cannot think of a fiction author I have fallen for so completely.

The author uses humor in mystery cases and winds his stories with plenty of suspense and drama, and mixes in the humor so deftly that one just wants to keep on reading just to get the entertainment that shoots out of every paragraph. I have read every one of his books 22 total. His last one , Which is "blackout" I have yet to read.. A plus is that he weaves his pet Labrador in each story and you fall in love with this dog... This review asks if there is sexual content...and there is..but it is very romantic and just enough said to make it fun and enticing without being explicit

What fun! I'm telling everyone I know that enjoys a really good mystery about David Rosenfelt - My new favorite author! Great plots and twists all told with a wonderfully smart sense of humor! I can't tell you how many times I found myself laughing out loud! Got the first book for free as part of the Audible Prime Member benefits and was immediately hooked. Switched over to print versions and am already on my fourth or fifth book in the series.

Rosenfelt returns with Andy Carpenter - a local reporter is being contacted by a serial killer after each kill. The newspaper he works for hires Andy to protect the interest of the paper. Or maybe that isn't the reason ... The reporter is eventually arrested after the murder of a prominent whistle-blower and Andy's friend Vince tells him that the young reporter is his son from a one night stand years before. The local New Jersey mob is pulled into the story as well as Willie from Andy's first high profile trial. His romantic interest Laurie Collins, her fellow PI Marcus, newspaperman and newly admitted father Vince, and policeman Pete Stanton all return.Rosenfelt layers the suspense and even long time mystery readers will be surprised by the twists his stories take. This is definitely the best in the series to date.

I stumbled onto this author through searching for amusing/lawyer/mystery on Amazon. Wow! What a delightful discovery. Mr. Rosenfelt combines all three in this series. His characters in his first book continue throughout the series. All are likeable and memorable. The courtroom scenes are especially enjoyable. Although the author is not a lawyer, his courtroom scenes seem as authentic as they are enjoyable. Treat yourself to reading the first book to understand all of the crazy New Jersey background.

David Rosenfelt is an easy author to like. His prose is light, casual, and witty, neither pretentious nor self-important. Kind of like Rosenfelt's defense lawyer-hero, Andy Carpenter, who stars again in "Bury the Lead". Andy is back with the usual cast of supporting characters: girlfriend/PI Laurie Collins, "Law-dromat" owner and hypochondriac Kevin Randall, and of course Tara, the golden retriever. "Bury" is again set in the northern New Jersey suburbs that Rosenfelt knows so well ("The Giants and the Jets play football in Jersey, yet they deny its existence, referring to themselves as `New York'"). Daniel Cummings, a high profile reporter with some baggage, is chosen by a fiendish serial killer as a conduit to the police, but soon finds himself as the number one suspect. Carpenter and team are initially reluctant, but eventually are convinced of his innocence and take on Cummings' defense. What follows is a relatively lightweight plot that, just when starting to stretch and fray around the edges, moves along quickly enough satisfy all but the most critical cases of A.D.D. There are a couple of twists to hold mild interest, but not so much as to make this a novel you'll remember three months from now. But Rosenfelt's likeable cast and breezy pace more than compensate any weaknesses in the action, and a surprisingly light tone, despite the rather gruesome subject matter, is a refreshing twist in itself.I suspect that the first-time Rosenfeld reader may find "Bury the Lead" somewhat more enjoyable than will the Rosenfelt veteran, as the Andy-Laurie-Tara act begins to wear a bit thin on this the third installment. Nonetheless, "Bury the Lead" is a credible and entertaining effort, well worth the time. One word of caution: at 272 pages of large print, this is a short read - don't plan on using it for filler on too long a flight.
