So far, my sewing skills have been limited to hand stitching up a hole in my sock, but after reading this book, I now actually know what a bobbin is and a straight stitch and am now working on my girlfriend's sewing machine. It's fun.
Good beginner book to learn how to sew, good common definitions and several quick and easy projects to sew, like a garden apron, baby blanket and several other fun ideas to try. I especially liked the part about setting up your sewing machine. I do wish it had a table of contents, to make it easier to jump between projects.
This book is great for anyone who wants to learn how to sew. I've always wanted to learn this craft and be able to create some clothes but I get intimidated. This book is easy to understand and covers the basics of what one should know. I think I can handle easy projects now thanks to this.
I am very new to sewing and need to learn a lot! I have not read this book all the way through yet but the things I have looked at and the way it explains everything makes it look so easy.
If you are a complete beginner, as my wife was a day ago, then this is a very useful guide. It is very basic but it’s supposed to be for beginners. But you will be up to speed in no time, as it is really well laid out, and easy to follow.
This has to be the most annoying book I have ever attempted to read. 1) No pictures! UNLESS 2) you sign up on her website for the gallery, and then only the finished project... not the steps illustrated. 3)The reminder to sign-up and get the free book every time you try to turn the page is just poor design. The first time you see it, sure... why not. I have an account I use just for these things so no skin off my nose to give an email address. But, I never got the free download, and then the same thing pops up every time I 'turned' the page! And every link throws you to the same page to sign up for your free download! The instructions for the projects you cannot see are brief, a.k.a. not detailed enough for beginners or beginner intermediates.While I knew terms at the beginning of the book, this was a good set of terms for beginners. I did like that there were not 500 terms you feel you need to memorize or you will never be able to sew. And the definitions were not long and drawn out, which can overwhelm you when you start sewing, so I did like this part of the book. The rest, well without the constant stalking and addition of pictures, it could have been a decent beginner book.
Love this book for beginners? But---Where are the patterns advertised? Do they come separately? The front of the book says"50 Patterns for Beginners" Please respond. This was bought for our granddaughter, and she will be delighted IF there were PATTERNS !!!
No pictures in the paper copy of the book to explain the patterns or even show the finished product. Could not find the pictures of the products on the author's website. Book and website try to get you to subscribe or buy her other books. There are much better options available with more substance and less fluff.
Not really anything about learning to sew, just basic terminology. The steps for the projects leave a lot of room for interpretation and there’s no photos of the processes. Tons of typos and just not a great book overall in my opinion.
