This time the scene is the Punjab as the outnumbered British forces face a formidable Sikh army. Behind the scenes are a glamorous but corrupt maharani (who is bedded by Flashman), her son and various devious pretenders. Flashman, who speaks the lingo, is acting as secret agent on behalf of the British but somehow always gets involved in battles he seeks to avoid. The atmosphere is colorful in the extreme, the battle scenes are splendidly rendered and some decidedly odd British commanders are deftly sketched. Flashman ultimately emerges with the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond, which he is seen in a delicious prologue discussing with an elderly Queen Victoria. The history is enlightening and the humour, a treat. Flashman, the gruff soldier, coward mistaken for hero, rogers his way through the Lahore Durbar and survives the first Sikh War by concealing himself amongst the ramparts of the Khalsa bridgehead in the thick of the fighting. Times have changed since Fraser penned the series and he does not flinch to portray the sexism and racism of the times. In a satirical work such as this, however, the reader has room to take it or leave it and judge appropriately. Indeed, one of Fraser's great strengths is his ability to stand back and laugh, having shown it how it was. The Sikh army nearly beats the British and may have done had its leaders not betrayed it. The women manipulate the men and outwit them as often as the men get the upper hand. Fraser paints a complicated world in which the results are by no means foregone, but rather 'only just' and 'by the skin of the teeth'.
Our intrepid hero, Harry Flashman, is back for volume nine of the Flashman Papers, a narrative of the life and times of one of the most ne'er-do-well wastrels to ever grace the pages of a published autobiography.The first five Flashman novels were presented in chronological order. This "packet", like its three immediate predecessors, acts to fill in a previous "gap" in the Flashman timeline. From a chronological standpoint, the adventures of this novel immediately follow those contained in Flashman's Lady, wherein we left Flashman on the heels of his escape from Ranavalona, the mad queen of Madagascar, that following his rescue of his wife, Elspeth, from South Sea pirates. Believing himself to be returning to merry, old England, Flashy is diverted instead to India, where the services of the Afghan hero are desperately needed to quell the restless natives.As in the previous Flashman novels, our Harry is revealed as the premier coward and opportunist of his era; faults which he quite willingly admits and even boasts of. Much as a prior day Forrest Gump, he has a way of finding himself among the most powerful and famous personages of his era, as he takes part in the great events of the period, in this case, quelling the Sikh Rebellion of 1845-46 and securing the Koh-i-Noor, the greatest jewel then in existence.Aside from uproarious fun and games, the Flashman series is set against historical events and actually serves as an educational experience. This is a first class Flashman novel, set against the background to the First Anglo-Sikh war. Poor Harry is shanghied into a political mission to the degenerate rulers of the Punjab in Lahore, ostensibly to broker peace, but in reality as a spy. Typically, betrayal and horrible death lurk around every corner, while Flashy rogers everything sight and escapes by whisker's breadth, saving the British forces from certain defeat along the way. There is a brilliant description of the ultimate battle at Sobraon. This is first rate Flashman, one of the best of the series, benefiting from a somewhat more mature character. As usual the historical setting is fascinating.
This volume of the Flashman Papers picks up just where "Flashman's Lady" ends. Flashman (rescued from slavery in Madagascar where he served as Sergeant-General to the army and chief stud to the Queen) is ordered to India. There war is looming between the British Raj and the warlike and well armed Sikhs. Flashman's attempt to get himself a nice, safe, rear echelon billet are thwarted when he finds himself being sent as a diplomatic envoy (read: SPY) to the Sikh court at Lahore. There he finds himself caught up in a maze of murderous intrigues and luxurious decadence. As Flashy pithly sums it up: "...by all accounts it was one continuous orgy at the Court of Lahore, with Jeendan galloping every man in sight, her lords and ladies all piling in, no one sober for days on end, treasure being spent like the wave of the sea, and the whole polity sliding downhill to luxurious ruin. I must say, it sounded quite jolly to me, bar the normal murders and tortures, and the furious plotting which apparently occupied everyone's sober moments."Once again, Flashy's talent for survival takes him through royal bedrooms, throne rooms, a death-trapped bath, an elephant ride that ends in an assassination, a torture chamber and the battlefields where the fate of India was decided.I particularly enjoyed this book because it deals with a fascinating episode in imperial history (the First Sikh War) and one that is relatively little known (in comparison to such frequently used settings as the North West Frontier or the Great Mutiny).
The best thing about the Flashman books is the way they weave fiction and fact together in such a way as to make the reader believe Flashy was actually there. Fraser has an uncanny way of getting Flashy into a situation so obscure that we can't understand just why he isn't mentioned in the history books at all. It is so unjust!I have learned more about military history through Harry's exploits than when I was a serving officer. I hate military history but I love Flashy. Thanks to him I have been able to join in the odd discussion abut various campaigns of yore.

How I wish that he had taught in our universities, all of them! Read it and the entire series for a sharp view of the world during the NineteenthCentury.
