This book claims to be for the non-technical and technical person alike, but that is not true at all. I don't know any more about satellites after reading than I did before reading it. Maybe someone with basic knowledge can find it as a good overview, and an overview, with just the facts is all it is. There is no basic science in it, there is no history like some other reviewer claimed, and what facts there are, are given with no examples and no context. Chapter 3 makes an attempt to give a helpful sentence or two about one thing or another, but there are no helpful explanations about anything. I kept reading that the military uses satellite technology for our protection, but in what manner remains a mystery until the conclusion page. The military, according to the one page of conclusions, uses satellites to track enemy bases, etc. A better writer would have included a chapter about how this is done, giving real-life, declassified examples. If you are looking for terminology, look them up on the internet. There is no reason to spend money on this book just for that reason.
As a graduate Engineer from MIT, I appreciate the effort Dr. Welti put into this book. It should help to, “stimulate a wide interest in engineering and science sorely needed to overcome our educational deficiencies and to compete in the global economy.†After reading his book, I went on Amazon and found many reviews. One that bothered me stated “Stay Away from this book†because “The author messes up the section on propulsion...The other chapters are ok...†The author commented back, “I missed the mark in trying to only use English units throughout the book in the Propellant Requirements Chapter, which caused confusion in how calculations were made. This confusion is corrected in the current revision...Original results remain the same.†He gave details in a second comment. I’m glad I ordered and received a copy of the revised version. There was no confusion. I agree with all the positive reviews, especially with “Something for everyone.†Also, this book is unique in presenting a real-life example of integrated-learning of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) that is picking up “steam†in our schools.
The author messes up the section on propulsion. He uses pounds (force) rather than slugs, pound-mass (mass) or kg. The section on the derivation of thrust is full of errors. The other chapters are ok but devoid of detailed derivations --- the equations are just given.
I've worked with satellites for most of my career but mainly as a user segment engineer. The discussions about propellent use and delta v was very illuminating.
Recommended by a friend. Down-to-earth (sorry, pun intended) easy-speak way to learn about satellites. You'll remember those words now that you understand them.
Welti has managed to address a number of function and design issues related to satellites in a manner that is easily understood by the curious layman. If I knew someone who was interested in space or satellite technology I would put this book in their hands to whet their appetite.

Great entry-level book on spacecraft science. Rocket science made understandable to the beginner. Understandable definitions and space related concepts.
