Its good. Its different.A refreshing change from space scifi with implausible physics, indestructible heroes etc etc. With an all to human protagonist (or three), likely and unlikely heroes.An earthan fleet, where it's not all sunshine and roses too.In fact society is downright dysfunctional.The writing isn't full of grammar and typos either.A solid job has been done to craft an enjoyable storyline, engaging characters and so forth. Enough that I am keen enough to preorder the next book.No spoilers.. :)
Having recently finished Rift, my first reaction is WOW, you really get your money's worth here. This is a detailed story involving a lot of characters, groups, and locations but it feels as real as today's political headlines. There were so many that I had some trouble keeping track of Who's Who until I got about a quarter of the way in. A frequent comment I make to many authors is that a "Who's Who" [or as some authors call it, a "Dramatis Personae"] is especially important for a detailed new book and equally for the next in a series when there has been some time between books in a series. A summary of prior events is also very helpful in subsequent books to a reader like me who reads a lot of books in the same genre. This is one of the reasons why I really like Nathan Hystad's work. It's how swiftly he brings subsequent books in a series to the market; I don't have a difficult time getting "caught-up" with his next in a series. I mentioned how this book is like today's political headlines because it's very hard to be sure whom you can trust and whether they have a hidden agenda. This is especially true as this segment of the series ends and we learn a trusted associate is anything but. For the first book of Nathan's prior series, I gave it a four-star rating with all of the following books a five-star rating. This series is starting with a five-star rating so the author has a "tough-act-to-follow." After reading all of his first series, I'm confident he's up to the challenge and I look forward to his next in this exciting series. Review by THE HOLEY ONE
The story is written more like an action comic book than science fiction. I needed to suspend belief in several places. Overall its a good read if you like this type of writing. For me it was okay. If you want hard Science Fiction look elsewhere.
An excellent beginning to another series by Nathan Hystad. I was hooked on the last series and this new one promises to be just as good. A real page turner with rememberable character and action. I await the next book scheduled for February 18th.
Not a fan of TV type serials, especially those that do not tell a story as a stand alone novel. This is a collection of backstories for the motley crew of a starship built by a rich industrialist searching for his family. The mixed crew of male and female scientist, ex-pirate/soldier, sentient android, rich guy and professional soldier has been seen before in several books. There is no ending per say. This portends a tale told many times (saving the universe) and does not tempt me to buy the next book at all. On the plus side, the author did weave the character's stories skillfully to bring then together on the ship and make them interesting.
I enjoyed reading his other series, so when I saw this new one, I thought I would give it a try. At first, I wasn't sure I would like it, then all of a sudden, BAM! I was drawn in and couldn't put it down. I liked how it went from character to character, each part of a greater whole being drawn together in the plot. The plot was believable also, which I think is important. I have to way it was well worth reading, and I look forward to the next book in the series.
Really good science fiction, well worth the read and I look forward to the next installment. I’ve really been struggling to find good, well edited authors in the genre that don’t think all dialogue had to be filled with vulgarity in order to fit in with the other authors. Well written and a really good plot. Thank you.
Of you like space science fiction, then this is the most exciting new series read. I have read many science fiction books and. This is one of the few i would recommend to be made into a movie or tv series.
