There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.It’s one of those stories that come along once in a while that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Jonathan Hillinger in the future. I would highly recommend this book. A well-deserved five stars from me.
After reading an excerpt I expected something special will happen after the war and I really couldn't think of what could it be. "The fate of the entire group" sounds so intriguing so I start reading expecting that special event when the fate of the group of the children hidden in a cave during the WW2 will come in question. But it was something totally unexpected and I still don't know do I like it or not.The fact is that I liked the book while I was reading it. If it is not a historical fact of the Nazi and all those horrible things they did, this would be a great story about a bunch of kids hiding in a cave underneath the concert hall and trying to help each other the best as they can. Knowing history, it sounds a lot darker and paints in blood even more than it should.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.I have read many novels about World War II, but this is the first one that took place in Romania. I thought the setting of the “fortress†was very unusual, as well as were the array of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was in awe how these people survived. The novel illustrates how a family can be created not by just blood, but by love. I was especially interested in the latter part of the book where the setting moved out of Romania, but then came back to Romania full circle. I liked the way the author showed what happened to all the characters towards the end of the story. I recommend this book to everyone who likes historical fiction.
It is finely crafted story full of lovable child characters and unexpected plot twists. I have read fair share of books about WWII survivors but this is rather different and has an interesting approach. I liked the concept of “The Fortress†and her meaning. Liked it.
