Look, the story line is good, but the writing is KILLING ME! These books are only as long as they are because of the author repeats things multiple MULTIPLE times! Do we really need to recount ALL the great deals of the main character every single time a new person appears, to include the ridiculous long titles? And the fight sequence....read the first one, skim the rest. They are pretty much identical. The spelling and grammar errors are also a nightmare. It's hard to get wrapped in a storyline when you have to try and figure out what the author meant to type, and not what they actually typed. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to finish the series because I've already invested 4 books worth of time into it, but I certainly won't be going out of my way to find more works by this author.EDIT******I just read reviews on the rest of the series. It seems it's the same things, over and over, and no conclusion to the series yet, even though it's in book 10!!! Nope, I'm stopping now.
When I was younger, I bought the PC version of Metal Gear Solid. It happened to come in a bundle with two other games, but I really just wanted MGS. Turns out one of those "freebie" games - Crimson Skies - got played far more often than MGS, and I still play it even today, whereas Kojima's classic has lost quite a bit of its luster.Likewise, I didn't purchase this omnibus - it came bundled with another book. But this collection is by far and away the greatest part of that purchase! It may sound odd, but this book is paced like a perfect D&D session - the assorted party has an overarching quest, but keeps getting detoured to save some character or village, and each book is essentially the tale of overcoming this minor foe while still slowly revealing the overarching plot. The characters are excellent, the action is well told, and the portrayal of Christianity in a fantasy setting is pretty wonderful - it almost feels like Poul Anderson's High Crusade in that regard. If you like fantasy you'll love this series. Buy it.
I really really do not care for this at all. I have a pretty high tolerance for cheese in my fantasy. All I read are fantasy novels, so a certain level is to be understood. However, man... This was a slog. The writing is boring and repetitive. Each book, the author seems to need to remind us of everyone's motivations despite the fact these books are absolutely teeny and thus this makes it feel more like a 'padding the runtime' than anything. It's worse, though -- more often than not, it feels like the descriptions of each character are taken word for word from each book. Yikes. Some people seem to really dig the delaying the main quest for sidequests thing, like a video game. Sure, it was fine the first time. The second time I was a bit less enthused. After the third time, I was frickin outta here. Are you serious? If I wanted to play a video game or DND, I would've done so. It would have been better if any of these 'sidequests' seemed to have any bearing on the overarching story but they don't necessarily seem to (though I'm not sticking around to find out, and there are some hints that they may in some small ways). I mean, even in "The Undying Wizard", one of the characters points out to Ridmark that going to this sidequest is an necessary risk and adds nothing to their quest. But yeah, hey, sure.Anyway. Maybe this is good for some. That's great. I need a bit more in my fantasy. That's all.
A review in one word: amazing.A review in more than one word:I love this series thanks to the world described. It is not very unique, with high elves, dark elves, dwarves, dark dwarves and the rest of fantasy crew. It is unique thanks to the times it is in. Apocalypse is coming and, as usually with events like it, nobody believes in its approach. The presented world is corrupted and rather hostile, with a few bright points that are source of hope.Luckily for the book, main character is far from being stainless. On the contrary, he is internally conflicted and rather pragmatic. He is driven by one idea, which is to pay back for his crimes, even if they remain such only in his opinion. As far as his pursue for death is at points difficult to believe in, it gave the author a good ground to build a merry crew of companions around MC. Again, most of the fellowship are far from being one-dimensional and remain interesting to the reader, not only in the reviewed few installments, but also beyond them.If I were to suggest the book to anybody I would think that people who like dark fantasy, similar to Kain cycle by Karl Wagner, might simply fall in love with it. The rest? Well, they too will find something for themselves in the series. It is action-packed, mystery-driven and simply amzing.
